A friend of mine gifted me the game, so I should have early access to the demo.

I expected delays, but usually there's some sort of warning after it's been a bit overdue. Hopefully it goes up soon.

Atelier Annie. VERY fun. Would love if Lise and Lina came over. Very much like Rune Factory; a mix of fighting and sim in a day based environment. I'm in November of Year 2 but there's no way I'm not gonna replay this at least 2 more times before I get to another game. 7 endings should prove a challenge, and new game plus sounds appealing right now. Japanese voice acting is kinda distracting, but it's better than no voice acting, so I keep it on.

PS3 - Uncharted 2, or NFS:Shift, Wipeout, Little Big Planet, SF4, etc.
DS - Devil Survivor, or Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2
PSP - Disgaea 2 or FF7, Tekken: DR, Burnout Legends, Jeanne D'Arc, etc.
PS2 - Okami or FF12, Shadow of Colossus, Rise of Kasai, Burnout Revenge
Wii - well i don't play it that much anymore.

Witcher or Mass Effect for PC, soon COD:Modern Warfare 2

I don't play those all in one day, but like to switch it up on occasion.
P.S. Used to play only World of Warcraft 3 years ago, but that phase is over.

Finally started Demon's Souls. Really love it, but I have no real grasp on the larger scale stuff yet. I'm just wandering around pulling levers, avoiding dragons, and helping out a dude with awesome armor for a pirate scope.

Some huge gate just opened in the main part of the first area and I need to walk through the fog. I'm scared of what's inside.

Here's my PSN info in case someone here wants the frustration of dealing with a complete noob to the game:

TheDeadTexan

I also downloaded a few demos and have been having some fun. Can some of you weigh in on the following games?

Katamari Forever (I have We Love Katamari, and I've heard this is kind of a remake. The demo seemed fun enough, but not sure if it's worth the money.)

Siren: Blood Curse (Haven't played a straightforward survival-horror game in eons. Curious about this one as well)

Fat Princess (demo seemed really fun, but not sure if there's still enough people playing to make it worth the $15)

Recently started my Phantasy Star Zero experience a couple days ago. Its very nice to see Sega go back to what made Phantasy Star Online good. There are some ideas brought in from PSU's gameplay, but thankfully only the good ideas.

And from what I'm hearing, Sega is finally taking a lot of the criticism to heart over PSU and PS Portable, if what people are saying about the PS Portable 2 demo is true, gameplay mechanics are getting a nice merging with PSZ's, though we probably still won't have MAGs. Something to look forword to :)

PSZ will do me just fine for now, though.

Perhaps because of the upcoming game, I'm in a Zelda mood. So I've started playing through the games again, in no particular order. I slogged though Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker already, and I'm almost done with Majora's Mask, and about halfway through Phantom Hourglass. A Link to the Past is up next... for that one I might try a speed run just for the heck of it.

Sadly I don't have access to Zelda 1 and 2... but I'll see what I can do about that. And maybe I'll finally try to get my mitts on the Minish Cap and the Oracle games (the only ones I haven't played).

So.. I am now playing Harvest Moon Animal Parade and Sunshine Islands. I'm having a hard time getting into the grove of farming after spending so many hours on DA.

(1) Pretty much everything from Blue Burst excepr for being able to combo Techs and Attacks together is here. Guns have their timed attacks again (thank god). Joint storage for all three of your characters. Three story archs to play, multiple endings.

(2) Well Phantasy Star Portable was a major step up from the the other PSU drivel Sega released. PS Zero is much more like the Dreamcast version, but with some PC version upgrades as I previously mention. Oh, and the story is actually good, if derivative of other classic Phantasy Star games.

(3) Yes, you can use friend codes or team up with matchmaking. Only downside to matchmaking is chat selections are preselected. Visual chat (the pictochat thing) is restricted to Friend Code grouping. I guess the went for the preselects in case you ended up with a japanese player or somethin'.

Also, if you have firewalls up, might want to take them down for Friend Code games, otherwise you might unintentionally block yourself or others from joining a friend code party.

All in all, it follows the flow of PSO very well. Only big differences are that you must play through the single player stuff to unlock areas and modes for online play. That's not too big of a deal because you're progressing a character either way.

Mags also have just 100 levels instead of 200. Sadly a lot of the Nintendo-liscensed gear is also gone, I guess Sega didn't want to pay for the rights to use them in our version again. Hatsune Miku stuff is gone, too.

Sega did give US gamers some neat stuff though. You can find gear from Valkyria Chronicles and some Mags can transform into anime characters like Toppi (that bear pirate guy).

Since I can create a virtual save, is anyone able to get through this one minute of gameplay for me on a 60gb model and send me back the save? Again, a ridiculously specific fix. PM me if you're willing, otherwise I'm stuck looking for a ps2/ps3 memory card adapter... and a ps2.

I picked this game up Friday and was so disappointed by the character creation I was inspired to concentrate harder on Phantasy Star Portable. I appreciate the feedback, and now that I have more insight into what Phantasy Star Zero is about, I can appreciate it for what it is, and wait patiently for the possibility of Phantasy Star Portable 2.

By the way: I have seen Phantasy Star Universe for the XBox 360 used in store for $19.99. I've also heard LOTS of negative things about it. Since I enjoy Phantasy Star Portable, what are the chances of my enjoying Phantasy Star Universe? Am I missing anything storywise? Phantasy Star Portable is the first Phantasy Star game I've picked up since Episodes I and II for the Gamecube. I'm just wondering if it's worth the $20 or if it's not even worth a second glance.

Thank you for all the info!

You get over the lack of character creation in PSZ when the weapon customization system is generally better than any other installment, so a lot of personality is found in that alone. Plus we have mags in PSZ, not those useless Partner Machines the PSU line of games has. Mags and AI partners in PSZ are actually useful, PMs and AI partners in PS Portable are not.

PSU is vile and disgusting, btw.

No timed attacks for any weapons, half the areas need to be unlocked through online play, so your offline experience is limited to the story mode. Story mode forces you to play as Ethan Waber, you can't use your online avatar for it, though the Shadow of the Illuminus lets you play as your avatar. Draw distance is awful, too, people on the space station spawn and despawn within feet of the character. AI partners are just about as bad as you'd expect based off PS Portable. Voice acting is as atrociously bad as PS Portable

In short, just keep playing PS Portable, its not like the backstory to PSU is something that's must-see anyway, you're getting the crash course in PS Portable anyway (SEED, Illuminus, that's about it). It might not have charged attacks for ranged weapons like PSO and PSZ do, but its much better than PSU and doesn't cut you off from zone access like PSU's BS fees do.

I will say that PS Portable 2 should be worlds better just for what PSZ has done, but obviously to maintain the separate universe, things like Mags probably won't make the jump. Charged attacks for ranged weapons and evasion moves will be added, though, and there will be more character customization than there was already.

Thank you so much! :)

I have been jonesing for some Ratchet & Clank... My PS3 is busted, so I can't finish Tools of Destruction (or start Quest for Booty,) much less the newest Ratchet PS3 game... :( I had owned the PS3 for a month (60gig B/C), beaten the main story on R&C: Future ToD, and was just starting the challenge mode when I got the Yellow Light of Death (like the 360 RRoD.)

Then I realized I hadn't started R&C: Size Matters (PS2), so I am in the middle of that now. I haven't started Secret Agent Clank (PS2) yet either, so that will probably be next.

I don't know how these compare to the PSP versions, but if they didn't take anything out (or even added a bit for PS2), then I don't mind.

The biggest complaint would be that these two games aren't from Insomniac, but rather High Impact, and just don't seem to have the same flow and balance as the original 3 Ratchet & Clank games. Plus, the camera follows to close, and is a bit wonky. I've heard that the PS2 ports look muddy and soft, compared to the PSP, but they look OK to me (on a standard TV.)

Got a bit frustrated with trying to find those treasures in Uncharted 2 without resorting to guides. Then I went online with MW2, got my butt kicked royally, and got more frustrated.

Then I remembered that the PSN game Flower was on sale for five bucks, so I went, "oh, why the hell not," bought and installed it.

Damn, that was a hypnotic game! :D Definitely worth the five bucks I spent. And now I feel relaxed too. :)

Phantasy Star 0.
Unfortunately I'm lacking on the 'online' part, as it won't connect to wi-fi on its own, and I can't get the (drivers for the) nintendo wi-fi usb connector to install on my computer. Downloaded the newest ones, vista compatible and all, but the installation just feeds me error messages :(

Ah well. Its still fun in single player. Even if it is a shame that the AI party members seem to act like morons on 'boss' fights, no matter what I 'tell' them to do :P

I'm also playing the God Eater demo, which is becoming easier to use now that I saw the menu translations on gamefaqs and can work out roughly what all the menu and box options are. The fighting seems quite fun so far also, though I haven't yet decided what weapons I prefer.

(And a random question, while I think about it. Is anyone here playing around with the Phantasy Star Portable 2 demo? And if you are, do you know how to 'aim' with ranged weapons? I keep hitting select, which I think is the button it used in the previous game, but of course that just brings up chat/emote options ^^)

L button to lock on and strafe the target, to aim its now Down on the D-pad in dungeons if I remember correctly.

The demo was good, just too much japanese for me to sift through for me to fully grasp all the new things. I didn't care for the fact it seems character models took a hit in the polygon department, though did appreciate that they "tooned-up" the 3D models they used for 2D cutscene stills, just straight using the posed 3D images as 2D still was ugly. Cel shading them for story bits was a lot better.

I also liked that I could actually make a male character that didn't look like a total dweeb. Last game forced me to make a female character because that was clearly where Sega put all the work in. They gave the male character models some effort this time.

Hate all the facial tatoos and scars, though. I know the obligatory eye patch will be somewhere in the main game.

Also: I thought you couldn't play the PSP2 demo with a US PSP? Something about online.

There's an online portion you can't play with a US PSN account, but the rest of the demo is functional as PSPs are region-free. The link to the JP demo is still up in a thread on the Sega forums and hasn't been nuked for weeks, so I'm assuming its kosher with Sega of America and the admins there.

Either way, the link to the demo comes directly from the Sega JP site. Check the PSU forum on Sega's forums for details.

You can sign up for a key on their home site (http://badcompany2.ea.com/#/beta). There's also a chance that if you play Battlefield 1943 in the next couple of weeks you'll get a key.

According to a review I read, there's a lot of variation and tons crazy moments, which makes it almost impossible to feel bored when playing this. Also, DMC manages to be awesome from start to finish (for the most part), so Bayonetta is going to be no less.

Played Bayonetta demo too. It convinced me that, if I'm ever in a mood for an insane button-mashing hack 'n slash title, Bayonetta will be the first game I reach for.

At the same time, I was really disappointed at the graphical shortcomings. I mean, I had read that the PS3 version suffered from screen tearing, low frame rate, and poorer texture, but I thought they were just the stuff that would bug only the super-picky people, and that it would be hardly noticeable to someone like me.

Indeed, I couldn't tell anything good or bad about the texture quality, and while the frame rate wasn't the best, I thought it was acceptable. But the amount of screen tearing that was going was shocking. It was just so prevalent and obvious. Even when there was absolutely nothing going on, there would be screen tears if I just rotate the camera. That really bugged the hell out of me.

I know Sony is reportedly helping out Sega to fix the problems for the US release. I hope they pull through. Or at least, release a patch not too long after the game's release. That screen tearing thing is really marring what would otherwise be an amazing action game for me. :(

Anyway, I went back to playing Uncharted 2, trying to platinum that game. I now have to beat the game at Crushing difficulty, and get only a couple more trophies, and I'll have my first platinum trophy. :D

The beta let you do 32 v 32 matches, and after you gained a couple of levels in that you unlocked Domination which is the 128 v 128 game type. I was amazed at how lag was never an issue with that mode. The only thing that suffers is the slowdown that happens when 256 explosions are going off at once.

^The hovering mechanic is a bit difficult for me. It requires clicking (to boost) and moving the left analog directional stick quite a lot to keep yourself hovering while aiming with the right. I definitely think you can develop a rhythm, but I am pretty sloppy at it.

Anyway, taking a break from it to goof around with Jet Set Radio Future. Great pick up and play title. The graphics engine used for JSRF still really impresses me. I wish Sega would have used it again.

The JSR titles have a quality kind of like Pilot Wings to me. You can totally have all the objectives completed, but the levels are still fun to dink around in. Always fun to discover infinite grind / trick loops.

I was just about to mount a turret when I got killed, and when I respawned my aim with regular weapons acted the same as the mount, meaning I could only aim within 180 degrees. Like if I still was on the mount. Also, the area I can aim in is fixed in one position, so if I try to aim towards an enemy, depending on where he is the aim automatically moves away from him. I tried to reload the game, but it didn't fix it.

Right now I'm at the said turret, which is guarded heavily by soldiers, and all of them are in the opposite direction of my glitched aim. Incredibly stupid...

Oh man, that sounds like a really bad glitch. :x

Did you try starting the chapter over? Maybe that'll fix it. From my experience of beating Normal and Hard difficulty levels, you can re-start a chapter, or even go back to a chapter you already finished and then come back to the current chapter, without it affecting the end-game trophy. I mean, as long as you stay on the same difficulty setting, that is.

Anyway, I'll be facing a gun turret when I start Chapter 6, so I'll have to be careful when I try to take it over. It doesn't take much to get killed in Crushing difficulty.... (but then again, that's why it's Crushing difficulty.)

Killzone 2.

What a painfully average game. It's not terrible, and it's nowhere near great. The only thing that truly stands out about it are the graphics. They look absolutely jaw-dropping. After the awe from the shine wears off you're still left with a paint-by-numbers shooter.

I'll finish the Campaign, and hope for something decent. Multiplayer feels way too frenzied, too. I appreciate the ranking system, but the amount of grinding involved to gain levels just isn't worth it. Not to mention that the actual mechanics of killing someone else online just completely make no sense. I've been killed by someone only to have the game tell me that I killed them right after, too. Seriously don't understand it.

Glad I only paid $18 for it.

Ray: Hell yes NMH

I've spent the WHOLE day playing FFIX. It has been fun, but man, some jRPGs tends to make you crazy with all the random encounters after a while. Also, I got to a point where my party is split in two, and I totally forgot this was going to happen; I brought my only good party members to the original destination while all of my underleveled characters are trapped in a castle filled with enemies who loves inflicting status effects a bit too much. I hate those parts in jRPGs. No one in that party is capable of dealing any reasonable amounts damage, with their lack of strength and useless abilities. (Eiko, Quina, Amarant and Freya by the way)

But it has to be said that the Steel Fist Expert trophy was annoying as hell. I mean, you'd never want to use the "steel fist combo" in an actual gameplay, so why force you to do it ten times in a row? :x

It's fun. Nothing to set the SRPG scene on fire but it's a whole lot more solid than 50% of SRPG out there. The "mature" content in the game is really nothing. If something mature shows up on the screen, it last about half a second. Not far into it but it has a whole lot more going for it than one would expect.

Just finished Metal Gear Solid 4. It...made me realize how much fan criticisms can do to a game based on story - for 4 is simply a HD epilogue to the series. Completing 4 me love MGS 1 and 3 even more.

Bought some stuff off PSN, currently playing Final Fantasy VIII. The consensus is that the story is supposed to sink later, but seeing as how I only played through it once 10 years ago, this replay will be one that's digging for some answers as to just how bad the story of FF VIII is.

It is fun carding enemies though. :D I'm having more fun with FF VII and FF VIII than the last 5 years of gaming combined... not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

Andy
12-22-2009, 01:15 PM
VIII gets a pretty bad rap, and a lot of those criticisms are definitely justified. The story going to pieces towards the end is definitely true, plus the whole final disc is a gigantic letdown. The love story....well, it is what it is. Also it just irks me that the best character in the game is only playable through flashbacks.

On the positive side, it has one of the more inventive uses of the ATB system I've seen. The whole system was insane to me back in 1999, but you really grasp how malleable it all is once you play it for a long time. By the end of the game you have some pretty impressive skills. The No Random Encounter skill was a really nice one for people who just wanted to speed through dungeons.

But yeah, rambling. Hope you keep enjoying it.

I picked up Bioshock for the PS3 last night. A bit of a slowpoke on my part, but I think it's time to finally play it for myself. What a beautiful game. The first hour alone I just walked around and admired every bit of scenery. So detailed and gorgeous. Plus I played it at night, so I was genuinely scared to find out what was behind each door.

Also got myself Parappa for the PSP. You just gotta believe.

Fatney
12-22-2009, 01:25 PM
Wasn't Parappa the Rapper port for the PSP a bit ruined, though? I tried it out for a while, but the game was so hard it just felt like something was wrong. I'm pretty sure I did good most of the times, but the game told me otherwise. I don't think the rhythm was in sync in this game...

Andy
12-22-2009, 01:53 PM
I think it has the same broken beat detection that the first one had. Lots of times I know I did amazing, only to have the game tell me otherwise. I beat the All Master bathroom rap the same way I beat it back in 1997. Luck.

I wish they would've released the PSP version as a bundle with UmJammer Lammy. That would've been such a great deal. Oh, I picked this up for $5 used at a local shop, but I'm super cheap so I like lots of bang for the buck.

Fatney
12-22-2009, 02:11 PM

Andy
12-22-2009, 02:30 PM
Jammer Lammy's a bit more forgiving. The case with PaRappa is really just nostalgia goggles for the most part. I mean, I genuinely love the game when I remember it and think of the music, but I can really only play it for about an hour or less. Plus, look at how cute PaRappa is. You can't help but root for him.

Currenly playing the multi-player with my friend too. I hope he realizes that Uncharted 2's multi-player is much more fun than Modern Warfare 2's one. ;)

Playing the Japanese demo to Phantasy Star Portable 2. I loved the demo so much that I'm going to try import the actual game ASAP. Phantasy Star Portable 1 is one of my all time favorite PSP games, and Phantasy Star Portable 2 blows the first game out of the water by including awesome new skills and fixing the small problems that I didn't like.

Also playing the demo to the Japanese version of Valkyria Chronicles 2 to get the hang of the tweaked battle system when I import the game in January.

Also playing Persona 3 Portable as the female Main Character. I look forward to dungeon crawling now.

Out of nostalgia, I'm playing Valkyria Chronicles again, this time on a completely new game file. Sure enough, it felt just as awesome playing the game again on a new game file just as when I first played the game.

Finally finished Ippongi Ryuuta's (normal) difficulty in Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan for the DS. This game's so much fun that I want to get the second game as well as Elite Beat Agents.

Check your anti-viruses and make sure nothing is blocking Steam from getting access.

I play L4D2 exclusively on the PC.

I just finished Act 4 of MGS4. The cut scenes are driving me INSANE, but thankfully this was one of the greatest Metal Gear moments ever. Starting the Act out in PS1 MGS mode was brilliant. Sneaking into Shadow Moses while the ending theme from the first game played gave me chills.

The battle with Crying Wolf didn't do anything for me. Just annoying and took way too long, but Vamp fighting Raiden while I use a railgun to cover him from Gecko in split screen was unbelievable. I almost died, because I kept looking over to the Raiden part of the screen.

Then topping it all off with the REX escape and RAY vs. REX was just almost too much awesome. Loved it.

Back to watching hours, and hours of cut scenes now. blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh

And the gameplay, though novel, is starting to wear thin. I'll go through a couple more major story events to see if it picks up, and if it doesn't it's going back to Gamefly.

As for Eternal Sonata, the gameplay is starting to get repetitive, but I'm still much enjoying the story and characters.

Working on wrapping up Devil Summoner 2 and Zelda: Spirit Tracks for now.

In keeping with my New Year's Resolution, I'm no purchasing any more games til mid-March save for money I put toward pre-orders, such as FFXIII, SMT: Strange Journey and Infinite Space.

Aside from that, all the money I'd normally spend on games is going to a PS3 and an adequate HDTV. Nothing big or fancy, just something affordable. Til Mid-March, the focus is on the the backlog

Though I did pick up Popolocrois and Final Fantasy for PSP, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow for DS and Nightmare of Druaga for PS2 - but those were good deals and I bought them before my New Years deadline so they're in-line with the resolution. The onlj minor exception to my resolution is I'm trading my PS2 in for a PS2 Slim, but that's because...

I completed my first resolution an hour before midnight - quitting FFXI. After I make a few image transfers from the PS2 HDD to my email, I don't need this model any more or the HDD.

It was kinda sad looking at my characters for the last time. You get attached to your like this after a few years and those characters feel like actual people in thier own little world. I logged out my Tarutaru Scholar (also a beastmaster) in Heavens Tower and my Mithra ranger (also a corsair) before the chieftainess of Windurst.

http://i36.tinypic.com/16i6vyu.jpg

I left mah babies all growed up and savin' the world and stuff!

/sniff.

It was a fun time, but it was also very much the time to move on, particularly with FFXIV out sometime this year. Best to part with that sense of attachment as early as possible if you're going to tackle another MMO down the road. So for now I'm back to offline and P2P online gaming.

I'm playing L4D2 so much it's crazy... I also played Demon's Souls for a couple of hours, played some more on my New Game+. I honestly didn't have much fun, though.
