^But I DID upgrade weapons. I spent almost 2 hours on it, actually, making the best possible combinations while keeping my affinities and using all available resources.
Did you try out different weapons against the enemies you were having trouble with? Were you using the analyze spell to see whether the enemy was weak to slashing, piercing or blunt attacks?
Switching out the pommel and gaining a few points in the weapons main attack affinity can make a huge difference with most enemies.

I've been mostly playing Crisis Core, progressing slowly as I waste a lot of time on missions. I've been toroughly abusing the materia fusion system, turning Zack into a beast with over 7000 HP at level 34 and dealing over 4500 with normal attacks. The missions are getting tedious, but they're the only thing providing any challenge so far. Some of the regular enemies in later missions can be real bitches.
I've also started a game of Gitaroo Man Lives! on master mode. I still only get halfway through the second song, even though I get most of that part right. Master mode really forces you to pay more attention to the music, I like that aspect.
Since I beat Fable last weekend, I think I'm gonna re-install The Witcher with the new patch to see if the load times are any better and hopefully play it all the way through this time. I loved the game, but got distracted by EO about halfway through it.
Since I bought Me and My Katamari for PSP I also expect to play a lot of it.

So far I like it. The controls take some time to get used to but they're allright once you do. (you use the directional buttons and the other four buttons as if they were two analogs, you can use the analog in stead of the directional buttons, but I find it less intuitive) It looks pretty good on the PSP's screen, but there seems to be little slowdowns at times. This doesn't seem to happen very often though. I have yet to try to special 2D Katamari mode, but it seems cool from videos I've seen.

As someone who played the 1st 2 ps2 games religiously, I found that, while Me and My Katamari offers the usual fun and happiness that the other games do, it becomes very obvious in level design, story design, and overall aesthetics that the game is really just a bastardization. And it is; Keita Takahashi was not involved at all. As it is now, the game is pure fun.

BANGAI-OOOOOOOOOOOO. Got Bangai-O Spirits in the mail yesterday and have been having a great time. I like how they allow you to change up your weapons before you start a level. There's a bunch of weapons to choose from compared to just the homing missiles and ricocheting lasers from the DC version. It's also more challenging than the one on DC IMO. The only disappointing thing so far is that I don't think there's any story. Which just means there's no silly dialogue popping up randomly in levels like the last one. Besides that, it's awesome, I love the level designs so far. There's about 160 levels and I've only played about 20 so far.
Other than Bangai-O Spirits, I finished Royd's scenario on Front Mission a couple days ago. And I got back into Folklore and I need to unlock just one more Folk to have them all. Hoping I can finish it soon and move onto something else, either MGO or GTA4.

Bangai-O Spirits. I didn't realize that this was a complete retool. There are a lot of cool new weapons that I really dig and the control scheme seems to have been further refined.
It does seem significantly more difficult than the DC version.
I really do miss the wackiness of the other versions. The silly characters are all gone and no crazy death screen. :(
Playing this with a hangover doesn't help, but I'm not sure if this game is meant for a small screen.

I decided to restart The Witcher from the begining because it has been a few months since I last played it. But the game has been randomly crashing on me for no apparent reason even though I have the latest patch. I didn't remember it being that unstable, unless I just got unlucky twice in 15 minutes. :?
I'm kinda pissed off with having to reboot my computer once again, so I think I'll indulge myself to a game of Shadow of the Colossus instead.

The DS version almost feels like a puzzle game.
I may look into getting the N64 original after my fin-aid comes in as I have waning interest in the newer consoles.
Yeah, the stages I played were small and cramped, and there didn't seem to be a lot of ways to go about doing things. Maybe it gets better later, but since there is no plot, really, there isn't a good reason to stick to it.

I tried the new game + feature in DDS a year or two ago and thought it was really boring. There really wasn't much of a challenge, so the only reason to do it would be to fight the demi-fiend, finish the mantra grid or reminisce over the story (yawn). None of those options were worth it in my opinion.

Yesterday, I exchanged Condemned 2 at Wal-Mart and got $40 worth of credit for it(I originally paid $30 for it back in June) and picked up the last non-Greatest Hits copy of Warhawk they had in stock. I played a few hours of it the other day and had a pretty good time with it. I just wish, since it's an online/multi-player only game, that they had some tutorial or training room like MGO does. Yeah, I more or less meet the minimum specs. I have 1 GB of ram, which is the minimum. My processor is an Athlon XP 2500+, and the side of the box says that XP series is not supported, but it still works fine. Also my video card is a Radeon All In Wonder 9700, and it doesn't seem to cause me any problems even if the requirement is 9800. I played the game up to chapter 4 last winter and it was very playable with small lag only in areas with a lot of people. ^ What kind of weapon are you using. The real reason that I suggested that skill is that it has a broad enough range that you can attack the boss without the boss being able to attack you. Plus you can spam it without much worry since the hp cost is so low.
Just for reference I was using a damascus dagger (kukhiri blade or something like that) with 95 physical affinity. With the strengthening spell I was doing about 50 damage a pop.

Played a bit of The Answer from Persona 3. *shrug* is there a hard mode? Cause I am capable of sniping enemies from like 20 yds away to get first hit, even up the steps on the platform... and I have a strategy that has not taken more than 6 rounds yet:
1. everyone hits.
2. everyone full assault, i exploit weakness, yukari supports.
3. everyone full assault - I support if needed.
4. if enemy still alive - Metis goes Orgia mode, and I continue to support/exploit.
No one has come close to dying, and I find little reason to grind.
Story might pick up hopefully, and it is kinda fun. Hoping ATLUS blows my mind with this one!!! If not, I go back to nocturne, where i am becoming quite the demi-fiend. but apparently, i have to go back and start over because somethign about mah pixie at the beginning. sigh.

I've been playing Too Human. It's fun when you can do co-op on a dungeon crawler. My guy is a Human Commando and my friend is playing a Cybernetic Berserker. Both the Melee and the Ranged damage are covered and we're almost unstoppable, however you do run into enemies that have high resistances to two types of the three types of bullets, and weak to one. As long as you have a gun of each type, you just have to learn how to switch quickly in combat. Nothing stops when you're in co-op, so with your menu up, the game is still going and you can still be attacked. :S

Played the Force Unleashed demo this morning. SITH LORD difficulty makes for a far more engaging game. Loved it. Gameplay feels like a mix of GTA and Devil May Cry. The only gripe I have is that the lightsaber is not a one-hit one-kill weapon. Not sure if that can be levelled up, or if collecting other lightsabers exposes better designs or something. Then again, I am not sure that having a real one-hit one-kill weapon will make the game better.
Also, for such "teh epic" space opera this demo was blessedly short on story.

Secret? Uh, I don't know. I've only beaten Super C on the NES like 3-4 times before, I guess I'm just good at games like those. By CS do you mean Counter-Strike? I'm not a big fan of competitive FPS, even though I'm generally "above-average" at them.
Getting good at competitive FPS always requires playing them very obsessively, and I never find them fun enough to justify the massive time dumps they require to stay at the top. The same goes for any online game really, especially MMORPGs. I don't like playing games obsessively for days on end (though I don't mind a few dedicated settings and keeping some variety in there) when I'm just playing the same 'ol thing. It just sorta takes the fun out of it.
What's funny is I never used to think challenging games were all that fun, but I'd play them compulsively, anyway. I'd still say to people that I preferred easier games, back then, though. There's some sort-of excitement in playing shmups and run 'n guns (and et cetera) that is hardly duplicated in other genres that makes them a lot more fun for me. I harshly criticize most easy games for boring me now, too, hahaha.
Crystalis was better than porn when it came out. Not sure how well it holds up.

I'd say it plays as well today as it did back then. The graphics have obviously aged quite a bit but the gameplay is still just as fun now as then. Wish they'd do another game in the series.

Lol I have already played through Star Ocean 3 (VP2 and FFXII as well). I really enjoyed SO3's battle system, but the dialog and the crappy cutscene direction wears me out. Probably the worst S-E localization that I have encountered so far.
I also had a strange impulse to complete all those stupid area maps, which never failed to get on my nerves when I missed a random edge somewhere in a dungeon.
I ended up going with FFXII due in a big part to playing around with Vagrant Story.

Finishing off the last little bit of Contact. I kind of put it on hold for a good while.
Smt 1, DDS 1 and Force unleashed demo. Want to finish Disgaea 2 before 3 is out but just hasn't happened. I love its intro though.
Dunno how I feel about force unleashed. It feels a bit awkward and inaccurate, and the demo is a bit on the mindless side, force lightning has way too short range, the pause menu doesn't seem to have any kind of character progression (although you do get a stronger force push before the demo is done) and the whole thing feels to me, a bit more like a tech demo of a physics engine than an actual game (Star Wars or otherwise).
Basically, come upon hallway full of crates with rebels/imperials behind, force push boxes at them, or force lift/throw boxes at them, and see the physics engine fly. Seems like it would get old fast. Light saber combat is also a bit on the floaty and inaccurate side, although there is a lock on button. It feels unnecessary though because even at highest demo difficulty, the enemies are pushovers that don't really require locking on or any sort of strategy, even the walker at the end (at-st?) feels a bit weak.
The thing is that there aren't that many things in Star Wars that can stand up to a Jedi, so I think the lift/throw/rinse/repeat model will be the game sans boss fights.
The design of the apprentice is also a bit uninspired and rather run of the mill with no really attractive/distinctive characteristics or inherent "cool". Even so it might be fun. Think I'll wait for the reviews on it.

Well, done with DDS. I really liked that game. the second one, not so much at the end. In fact, I never actually finished it, interrupted it for X reason and when I tried to pick it back up found myself lost in the very annoying bs last dungeon.
Hopefully I get through it this time with every secret boss item but Hitoshura's drop (Hito is just too cool, and the idea of grinding some 30 levels and infinite vit and hp noises was a bit too unappealing.)
Also, SMT.
I think I'll pull a Kaibigan, choose one to be my next strategy game:
Soul Nomad, Disgaea 2 (around finishing it) Makai Kingdom, Phantom Brave (by the end, too) OD, Rtype command, or (insert random suggestion that I might have). Finished Front Mission DS on the hard campaign, but I think I want a break from it before I do the other one. Is it good/very different? I heard 5 ocurs concurrently so if it's patch is ever done I might want to play through it.

the only thing really bad about OD is the camera, but that can easily be bypassed by learning to navigate using the bumpers and triggers and changing the area map to a complete overhead.
Cover system and auto-restore make the game really easy, too.

Why do you say this is a blatant God of Wars rip-off? I saw very little in terms of gameplay that matched... but I am a novice to the God of War titles. seemed too repetitive. Actually, this seems a bit repetitive as well.
Is that why?
Esoteric
08-25-2008, 03:43 PM
^I'm a little premature in calling it a GoW rip off. However, there are some very similar gameplay elements in both, and I think it's pretty obvious that Force Unleashed has that sort of baddass element to it that GoW had. You are the baddass who can take down anything you want, and here's some tools to do it with. Sure, FU allows you to interact with objects all over the place, which is very different from GoW, but the overall cinematic feel to it (plus the on screen button indications all-to-familiar to GoW fans) really makes me think of GoW when I play the demo. I'm hoping to be proven wrong, believe me.

Does it really have to be an RPG? >.>
When I feel like that I usually do action games. Silent Bomber! psx, pretty awesome. Disgaea is strategy RPG and fun if into those, it also goes for humor.
Ace combat 5 and 0 are going for 20 and they are pretty fun, 5 has the better plot. Lair with the new patch is pretty okay too if you find it for cheap. God Hand, blood will tell, and gungrave are all good too. if Gungrave go for the first one, you can get for 5 or so. Yakuza is great too.

Eso >> For PSP I could recommend both Syphon Filter games, Worms Open Warfare 2, Infected and Bounty Hounds. The GTA games are good for mindless fun as long as you don't mind the occasional glitch here and there. I can't count how many times I got stuck in the sidewalk. Also, if you can find it Field Commander is pretty decent. It's a blatant rip-off of Advance Wars, but it has its own spirit. The story kind of reminded me of G.I. Joe or the first C&C games.

They also need to work on that DLC we were promised; one short mission is severely lacking when you consider some of the stuff Bioware said before ME came out.

I know they have more than one team. I was just trying to be funny. Guess I failed.
As a side note, most comedy dealing with things like office jobs and video games are grossly over-simplified. Take Grandma's Boy for example. When Kevin Neelan's character comments that JP's new game is very Miyamoto, I about threw my remote at the TV.
Anyway. . .
I'm white-knuckled with anticipation for a ME sequel.
Regarding additional recommendations: I can R++ HoD, but I had a hard time finding it after I rented it ten years ago. The first 2 Oddworld games were fun, but the third felt like a rehash of the first two to me. Keep in mind it's been a good amount of time since I've played any of these, so my memory could be betraying my better judgment. Also, MML1, 2 and Tronne Bonne were awesome to the max.

Also, Katamari went back into my PSP, I think I needed a break from both Tales of the World and Crisis Core.

I haven't played Magical Melody, but I agree with your sentiments that movement feels clunky. Still, I can't wait to grow me some rice!
Have you tried n+ yet? I'm still iffy about that game. I loved the original n and the LIVE Arcade version of n+. Even if I decide to get it, I'm conflicted by whether it would be justified to buy the PSP version or if it plays well enough on DS to just get it on that. I went through the same thing with Worms Open Warfare 2 and ended up buying it on both systems, even though IMO the PSP version is the superior one.

I've never played the LIVE Arcade version, so I can't compare it to the DS version, but so far, I like it. It's simple and fun, but wall jumping feels a little awkward at times.

Fallout 1, now that i'm getting a hang of the system, this is an excellent game. The graphics aren't too bad either, I thought it was going to look alot crappier. I'm also playing Neverwinter Nights on my laptop, a fairly lackluster game, i'm a bit disappointed.
I'm also trying to finish Phantom Brave. Its really easy to power level characters in this game, its just a matter of me sitting down and playing through the story (which is pretty decent I might add.)
On my handhelds, i'm mixing it up with The Word Ends with you (which despite all the flack everyone gave it in its thread, is a pretty good game) Final Fantasy IV and Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories.

No, DS version. Played the 360 version at a friends house a while back and I play the flash game at work sometimes, which is why I got the DS and PSP versions. I haven't played the PSP version yet, but from what I've read the challenge curve is a little more aggressive.

I played some Ridge Racer PSP, and the Space Invaders Extreme and some random anime fighting game demos. I really want SIE. And anime game was alright, but not anything great. Though I did take out Ridge Racer and have DarkStalkers in my PSP for the next time I play.
And I played Contact earlier.
Phoenix Wright was on GBA.. and is practically a graphic novel.
It wasn't on GBA over here, though. One of the five cases, perhaps the lengthiest case, was DS exclusive, too. It's more like a point and click adventure than a graphic novel, too. I'm a huge fan of the series.
Edit: My current icon is Ema Skye as she appears in Apollo Justice (the fourth Ace Attorney). She was introduced in that DS-exclusive case.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.
What are your first impressions, Kid?
I like the pacing of the story, it is a pulp adventure done well. It moves fast and never feels boring to play so far. Treasures are nice (i'm curious to test all the unlockbale options/skins/filters... next-gen render ???).
I'm fully aware... but it is still technically a GBA game without that final case.
It was on the DS. So it's my favorite DS game :b

It sounds like, and I might just be being presumptive, that you stopped after the second. The second is by far the weakest in the series, especially if you don't play to the last case. 3 and 4 were both very good and picked things back up. 4 freshened things up, and 3 was a little bit more quality than the first, but not quite as good since it wasn't "new."
You sure are a whore for Capcom...
To be honest, I'm more of a Konami fan than anything else. There are a lot of Capcom series I'm pretty neutral about, and despite being a big fan of several, I readily admit they have a lot of ####ty entries.

Probably, theres heaps of good pictures done for games that no one ever sees. Might have been in a magazine or a poster or covered by text in the manual or something.
Dead Rising is one of those games that is actually as awesome as the art on the cover.
Reminds me of this awesomely awesome picture for DDS2, in the european version it was black and white behind heaps of text in the back of the manual.

^ Opinions, please!
I wrote some stuff over at arlus, but to sum it up I would have to play more to figure out how I feel about the game.
The whole first dungeon is sort of jarring since they throw all these systems at you and then you have to make your way out with an angry monster than can kill you breathing down your neck.
It seemed fun enough from what little I played, but I am having to much fun with ToV to invest any more time into IU.

Final Fantasy VIII.
I am finally in the final dungeon -- hunting the bosses who have sealed my powers so that I can get them back and then finally take down the ultimate sorcoress Ultimecia. I didn't finish my first run up to the final boss a few years ago but I am enjoying the game much more this time around -- after playing it over from the start with a different, more accepting/exploratory attitude.
