I'm not saying I agree with Kat's review here, but I think your sexism would be a bit more well-founded if her criticisms were more about the fanservice (which she was fine with) and not the gameplay. No more of that, okay?

Well, I'll contribute my first impressions so far. The graphics are absolutely awesome in my opinion, the combat and character images are beautiful, and the world map brings back fond memories of old school Final Fantasy games. (Speaking of which, with that sword, Kaguya looks like she escaped from a Final Fantasy)
The music is great, but the Japanese voices kind of annoy me, yes I can hear some of you otaku brats out there plotting my demise as I type this, and I don't care, I don't understand Japanese, and it bugs the hell out of me wanting to know what they're saying all the time, they should've either included subtitles, or a list of translations with the manual if they weren't going to dub the voices.
I love the gameplay, it's easy to learn once you pick it up, and it's fun figuring out when to cancel one attack in the chain so you can maximize you frontier guage. Which brings us to the next point, overdrives. As if it wasn't fun enough brutally destroying the enemies with all out brutal 100+ hit combos, you can finish them off with even more brutal special attacks easily on par with the Twin Bird Strike, or Rampage Ghost for sheer brutal, visceral pleasure.
The writing for the game is great. You know how some games try to take themselves far too seriously? Well luckily this game doesn't break the tradition set by previous OG games of maintaining a nice balance between lighthearted jokes and plot.
Now, as no game can be perfect, there are two things that rather irk me, apart from the already covered Japanese voice actors. First is the lack of the drama CD, I personally would have really liked to get an English dubbed version of it, or at least an English script of it. Second is the fact the mecha take a backseat in this game. I'm fairly positive that the package said Super ROBOT Taisen, not Super HUMAN Taisen. I want giant kickass robots, not Princess Family Size. (I don't see how anyone can be attracted to Kaguya anyway, I can't help remembering she's named Nanbu and thinking of her as Kyosuke with boobs.)
Overall, I'd have to say this is an incredibly awesome game, I'd give it a 7/10, with points deducted for the lack of English translations for the voices which drives me mad, and the robots being shoved out of the spotlight.

You're... not really missing that much with the voices being untranslated. Just more or less random "Justice triumphs" and other such meaningless battle/victory yells. You get most of the point off how it's said even. And it's not really fair to judge a spinoff off of what the main series is. Sure, the main series has a ton of robots in the front, but... it's not like the game is ruined because it only has a few, it's just something different.
BTW, I love love love the battle system in this game :)

Meh, I personally think my review is fair, it's still a great game regardless of the few flaws I personally see in it, so I'd definitely advise people to buy it regardless.

My only complaint with the game right now is that there are so many boss fights. They take too long :) As for the whole robot thing...you've got Aschen, KOS-MOS, and the Personal Trooper, who's a more roboty robot than the other two. Plus, a lot of your enemies are robots, so I don't feel like I'm starved for robots here (even if they aren't giant)...

Heh my only problem with the game is that I can't put the darn thing down. I just know I am gonna get caught playing it at work. :D

^I left mine at home for that reason alone.

Anyways, I love this game. It is awesome. I agreed with previous post that found the japanese voices to be a detriment. However, I got over it because, like someone also said, I figure it is just a battle cry (which usually gets annoying anyways). At least I can use my imagination or attune it to background noise.

I am still trying to get the hang of when to the support attacks to maximize combos because before I had the option, I could chain attacks pretty well, but now... not so much. When I try to add in support to the mix, my timing is off. This game is so much fun.

I don't mind the boss fights. It gives me a chance to challenge myself to see if I can beat my previous combo record.

Well, he didn't put it this way, but u can argue that women are not fans of big boobs and sexy femme shots, right? Even if you TRIED to put that out of your mind and be objective, could you really be objective? The sexiness of this game is a big part of its feature-set, so I don't see how any reviewer could just overlook that, or rather, completely ignore it. It's bound to color (i.e. contaminate!) your objective review!

But in the case of 1up, especially, I tend to question whether a review is meant to be honest or BAD@$$! The site is guilty as heck for being controversial and bad@$$. Why else would Kat publish that "Jynx is black face racism!" comment in one of her Pokemon articles? Is it really appropriate to accuse Pokemon of open racism? Really? Aren't we just LOOKING for controversy at that point? See, this is why I wonder about 1up sometimes. Cause statements like that are more inflammatory than true. And it makes me wonder if Kat said that cause she believed it, or cause she was trying to fit into the "BAD@$$" atmosphere of 1up.

But back to Super Robo - I played a bit of the intro level and was impressed. I wasn't sure about the combat system before, but I'm liking it fine now. I see it'll take some finesse. But more than that, I wanted to say that the overworld map and sprites are awesome! They're simple as heck, and that's nostalgic goodness right there! The game reminds me of Zone of the Enders: Fist of Mars on GBA! :-D Awesome game with simple overworld graphics!

I want to but my two cents in, but I am not good at reviews. Plus I have yet to beat the game. But I want to give out a perspective on the game for newcomers, those who are excepting constant robot action and why Atlus named it Super Robot Taisen even thought the focus isn't on the Robot. Now this is just my thoughts and I hope it will help those who think about buying this game.

Let us begin with the name; I know that atlus really didn't like the overall sales in SRT OG1 and OG2. I am not going to go on what went wrong but just point out that the low sails are the reason for a loss of interest in the series. To this day we wait for more of SRT from Atlus though there is the obvious problem with it games (licensing issues) and the PS2 version of OG 1 and 2 are the ones atlus can bring over with no trouble. Although one well known company was able to do something about licensing issues somehow with this game. (http://www.capcom-unity.com/kramez/blog/2009/05/18/capcom_e3_mystery_game_1_revealed_in_july_nintendo _power) I do know that atlus must be aware of the high demand of the game because of the 43 page, 1200+ replies and 120,000+ view thread here http://www.atlus.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6 To avoid making the same mistake again and want to hope bring back interest in the SRT series is to localize a game called "Mugen no Frontier". It is a side story or spin-off the SRT that was co-produce by the company who made Namco × Capcom, "Monolith Soft".

Next is the game; Mugen no Frontier is an interesting game. The look and feel is very simular with the SRT series and after playing it a bit I can safely say that the whole game just feels like OG, from music to the items and skills to of course the cameos. (one stage in particular has an arrange version on the OG2 main enemies) However despite its look and feel the game is lacking the one defining thing any SRT game had before and after that; the Robots. The game has only four OG style mechs in it; everything else is focused on the much-overlooked part of the series, the humans. The game uses characters and battle style that is more familiar to NXC (improved gamely and three characters from that very game) and has everything any SRT game had, just without the robots. I want to put something in prospective; the robots in SRW's don't run themselves, they almost all have pilots in them. The pilots are all unique and different, (from our otaku, Ryusei to our lady of sex and luz, Excellen) all with there own personal story and of course almost each of them have there own giant robot. Now from what I notice and my experience with the series is that the pilots are just as important as the robots they pilot but there is one thing that always seem to bother me; only the pilots face is shown. (or rater there upper body) From as far as I can remember there has never been a full body image of a character in the game.(other than the main charters) The games main story is text and the videos that some of the games do have is of the robots. The best why to see the pilots is in the battle when you get to see them before they use a special attack. Since then there has been an anime for the OG series but other than that, SRT hasn't been know to show you much of the characters in the game. There are even some that you can’t even tell what they look like with only a mugshot to go with. So enter Mugen no Frontier, a game that give us what SRT has never gave us before. The whole game is for the much overlook pilots of SRT. Granted this is a whole new cast that has not yet appeared in any other game before. Banpresto gave us charters that could fit in a normal OG game, but are in their own original series. They have everything they would have if they were in robots and they’re just as fun as the cast of OG.

Now here is a spoiler for those who haven’t played the game. In the middle of the game were you revisit the first ruin in LOST HERENCIA; you enter a room and on the monitor you see the robots that you will face in the game. But here is the best part, Kos-mos explains to the team that the image that is on the screen is not the mechs you will encounter, but rater than robots that scale at 60 or more meters. Turns out the robots in the game are smaller duplicates of the OG robots, my guess that the shadow mirrors are involved in it. And that’s not all; another ruins have wreckage of robots parts that look very like the mechs in OG. (You could clearly see a broken Zankantou and the head of Aussenseiter) So you see, the robots are there, just in the shadows.

Now last is the name that Atlus gave it: By know you have played the game and by now you see that it is has more to due with humans than robots. So the obvious question is in you’re mind is, why did they named it "Super Robot Taisen"? The answer is based on my thoughts only; after Atlus decided to localize the game and see that this my be there chance to bring people back into SRT, they had to figure out how to name it. Now they could have named it infinite frontier and leave out the SRT name but they and others who have played the import and Banpresto know that this is still a SRW game. Even though it lacks the robots and similar gameplay, it has every thing else that is to be expected in a SRT game, including the "bounce" that is a standard in SRW games.(and for this game has excelled in) So it would make since to name this game Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier.

So there you have it, although this isn’t' the game most expect it to be, it is still very fun and worth it for any SRT fan. This game takes a different approach and gives spotlight to "the pilots". Will there be another game, who knows, (although there is a thead for that for those who have already beat it http://www.atlus.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3580) as it stands there hasn't been a new OG game in quite some time and there is still room for the story to expand. For endless frontier it is worth buying for its gameplay, the cameos and for atlus well done and funny innuendo enriched dialogue. Now enjoy this fan made (and off sync) gameplay of Haken in OG2.

To be honest, 1Up has some other problems. Like they don't play half the games they review. I point out the Trauma Center: New Blood review for evidence of this.

http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3164514&p=44&sec=REVIEWS

Don't get me wrong, the game is hard, but not as impossible as they declare here... are they gamers? Or idiots? I had no problems with the game, playing alone, on Hard. I beat it 3 days after I got it. They claim they had to give up? Um... yeah. No comment on that...

Point overall, don't ever really take a review at face value.

On the brighter side, RPGamer posted their review today:

http://www.rpgamer.com/games/other/nds/srwogsaga/reviews/srwogsagastrev1.html

4.5/5

See, I'd trust RPGamer to give a fair review... 1up? They're overpaid journalists. I swear they get paid to bash a game every so often just to keep things interesting.

I'd agree with 1up's review in that the normal battles are repetitive and quite long. I would have also liked to not have to slog my way on foot back through dungeons after fighting 4 bosses.

I'd give the game 3.0/5 because it HAS potential, but kind of drags it out a bit.

Most of the reviews were positive as far as I've seen. I remember when i first found out of this games existence when i saw it as Gamestop.com's featured DS game. then i've read other reviews and then shortly afterwards i bought it. i couldn't put the game down, i loved it so much lol. but as for negative reviews, i understand and respect some of their complaints, such as boss battles taking too long to finish and repetitive fighting sequences. Honestly it didn't bother me at all. Just learn to respect others opinions on how they see other things.

Funny thing abour reviews, reviewers are people, and people is bound to put their own feelings onto what they talk about.

1UP's Kate certainly did not saw with good eyes the over-the-top and certainly full of innuendo script, that's understandable not because she's a woman, but because the script cannot just please everyone. With that said, it is not fair that because of that she simply puts down the script because she didn't liked it... that's less than professional and sounds to me (again I may be wrong) that she skipped a lot of dialogue.

Also her thoughts on the battle system leads me to believe she certainly did not got a hold of the system in question, we all know that with the right equipment on a first run you can finish a fight in matter of moments, and boss fights are meant for you to spam over using the Frontier Gauge items and seishins to get overdrives quicker (if you want, honestly I like to build the F-Gauge) Heck, if her main complain is that the fights are overall long, then she didn't got far enough to get a Code Lamia+Jackpot+Ougi Yomeiri no Kata wich IIRC are the first safe specials, 3 of them in a row can easilly wipe out an enemy party.

wich leads me to the main fact that makes EF a rather easy game, people forget about buying 10% items after a while, while those are the bread and butter of this game, allowing you to resupply your stats at late parts of the game when you need to save the bigger items for boss fights.

... and that assuming you have issues juggling because if you don't, then there's actually no reason to worry.
