Did you set his spells in the guild menu?

Futomimi

Go to the guild and go to "learn spells" if you haven't already. If you've already done that, he might be out of spirit points (or whatever), in which case you can go sleep at the inn in the 20g room.

You also can't cast spells on the first turn if you ambush enemies. Or at least, that's how it seems to be working for me anyway.

Still trying to figure out why my Priest (who has a level in Mage) randomly can't cast his Mage spells sometimes. Those sleep spells are really useful!

Zack: I would assume you give it to the Guildmaster guy?

Well I tried to turn it into the guildmaster by talking to him using the info command but no dice.

He probably has gear on him that a priest can use but a mage cannot. That removes your access to arcane spells.

No problem, hint for the future! If the item shows an upwards triangle in the equipment shop it means that the class can equip it and not lose the use of its abilities.

I also had a "nerfed" priest toon who couldn't heal because he was using a dagger. I simply wish they would have made it so such items would not have been equipable. It brings back the days of old school pen and paper D&D. Your mage wants to wear platemail?!?! Sure here's your penalty for casting in full metal armor.... What do you mean that's ridulous?!?! You try wiggling your fingers and waving your arms in the right patterns wearing 25 lbs of iron plating... I hope a grue eats you....

See, I view it as being situational. Maybe it should have given you a warning or something, but if you're fighting a bunch of magic resistant creatures, you're probably want your mage to be doing more stabbing and less handwaving, right?

If they're low on health and you're just trying to have 'em make it to healing, you throw 'em in a big ol' suit of platemail and have them yell "Not in the face"!

My question to you Manly IS, how do you unlock more items in the shop?

Gen Eric Gui
04-16-2009, 03:10 PM
I'm with Manly. I can see situations where being able to equip whatever, even if it cancels your abilities, would be helpful. Like, if you run out of mage spell charges, why not equip more powerful equipment that cancels it until you can get the charges back?

Gen Eric Gui
04-17-2009, 10:18 AM
At least it was only a couple of gold pieces. You make more money then that in a single fight once you get off the first floor.

I'm still waiting to see if it actually -does- do something, in some strange twist of bizarre logic. It would be hilarious if it weakened the final boss or something.

Is there a point where my characters will actually start hitting things? It's not uncommon for me and the enemy group to spend upwards of 4 turns doing nothing but missing each other. My whole party is level 4 and even with my Warrior's "Accurate Attack" he's still having problems hitting Bats and Goblins, let alone anything stronger.

"accurate attack"?

My whole team except for the priest who can't attack in the back hits most often than not on things on the first floor. The second floor is a different story, B1 has been pure death so far.

Gen Eric Gui
04-17-2009, 11:00 AM
If you press right when selecting Attack for Melee units, you can select special properties for your attack(For example, you can raise your accuracy by going later in the turn order, or vice versa). This also applies to spells for Mages and Priests(Cast faster with a chance for failure, give up speed for more effect), and special defense options for certian classes(The Thief can "hide", the Warrior can "Counter", etc).

But yeah, I still miss. A lot. Nothing can hit me because my AC is very low(Around -4 or -5 already on my Warrior, who is in Heroic formation), but I can't hit anything else either. Especially on Floor 2 or in the Basement. The only way I can kill anything there is by slinging spells and putting things to sleep.

I got raped after two steps into the Tower. Then I got raped somewhere along the way to the Basement. Then I got raped into the Basement. I thought "Oh well, I must have taken the wrong way", and I went to 2F, being raped twice or thrice in the process. Needless to say, I was raped by some dudes as soon as I got there. I think I never died so much in a game. And strangely enough, I never enjoyed dying so much, because everytime I died, I understood something new, that made me learn not to repeat that same mistake. I love this game. And someday I'm going to finish it. Someday.

-Wrong equipment?
-Spells not yet learned at the guild?
-No healing spells learned?

I can't think of anything else at the moment; my priest couldn't cast anything and was basically an useless piece of meat until I noticed he was equipped with a dagger.

There were Goblin Sergeants on Floor 1 and Pirates/Buccaneers on Floor 2 that were technically bosses. They had different battle music and everything.

Futomimi
04-19-2009, 10:45 AM
You need to find the Clover Key.

It's in a hidden 1x1 room at 11N, 0E. You have to get there by going up to the second floor, down to the first by the stairs at 12N, 10E, and going west through the darkness and around. You have to search the corpse with the X button to get the key. The key doesn't really take you anywhere new, though--it just makes it a lot easier for you to explore the dark areas and to get to certain parts of the second floor.

There seems to be tons of hidden rooms with no apparent doors as well. Be sure to check every suspicious (or even not suspicious) wall. :3

Yeah, I've been doing that, but I'm stuck now because I have no idea WTF the Skull Key is for.

The skull key is used to unlock the captains quarters in the pirates cove on the 2nd floor. There you take the captains log and give it to the pirates new captain. They leave on the magic ship to plunder the third floor of the tower. If you re-enter the room where the ship is you can get on the magic ship and get to the third floor.

I have another Q: If you dual-class a character, can you level him up in the former class later on in the game?
Do you use more than your 4 characters (by switching them from town, as Atlus recommends :))?

Gen Eric Gui
04-19-2009, 02:57 PM
Do you use more than your 4 charactersNo, too much grinding involved. I even went so far as to delete the starting characters after I abused their high level for early golds so I could keep my guild lists easy to navigate.

Seems like I've encountered a bug/designflaw. I found 'Moonlight Jewel' *BEFORE* accepting the quest "The Moonlight Jewel". Quest won't finish. And I can't destroy moonlight jewel and redo.

I found the jewel first, accepted quest afterwards, but it doesn't show as finished. Seems like a flag doesn't get set if I get the jewel without being on the quest.

Is this quest beginning of a questchain?

No, it's not showing up as finished because you haven't finished the quest. There are two distinct parts to that quest, and "getting the jewel" is only the first part. I'll even give you aother free hint, the guild in the town isn't the one who wanted the jewel, so delivering it to them is pointless. Who wanted the jewel? Go give it to THEM.

@Matja: You can't get that started for a while now. Parts for the device are scattered across the first 4 floors.

Over 20 Copper Coins on the basement at the same time.

I won, but every person except one mage had 1 HP, and I opened the chest, and my main attacker (Thief Halfling) got poisoned. I made it out alive, but Level 3 is NOT a good choice to enter the basement, I presume...

first i'd like to say this is the best game to come along in YEARS! but i'm in need of some help. . .

there must be something very obvious i'm missing but i can't figure out what. from what i can tell i have every level (basement, first, and 2nd) explored as much as possible. i'll try to explain the limits of my exploration as best i can.

in the basement i found a secret corridor in the second dark area leading to a staircase that leads to a room housing the merchant's guild or something on the 1st floor, which a man inside will not let me enter. other than that i found a treasure room behind the staircase.

on the first floor i've found one secret treasure room in the first room of the area with the statue in the bottom right of the map. that's it.

on the second floor i found an empty secret room by the gambler's den entrance, a hidden corridor behind the den that leads toward the staircase with a secret door above it. there's an empty room next to the staircase and a secret room at the end of the corridor.

i have examined every wall that shows to have emptiness behind it. i'm really at a loss here. also, i still haven't found the grave robbers (nor the moonlight jewel/thieves guild), and i can't figure out any of the tips thus far. thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me.

I could use an advice on how to use all my other charaters except warrior more. I use the heroic formation. My warrior has default AC -6 (with his eq, but with no spells on him). Thief has a crossbow and priest along with the mage still have the quarterstaves which doesn't do a whole lot of damage in combat. So what's the key? :)
I'm already on the third floor, yay! :grouphug:

Gen Eric Gui
04-23-2009, 05:15 AM
The Priest can be a decent Melee unit if you give them a flail, chainmail, and a shield. Around floor 4 you'll be able to give him a Jitte, which will make him even better on the front line. Also, get the Holy Guardian spell ASAP so you can get that delicious permanent -3 AC.

Thief is going to suck until you get the good bow drops later. Mine was consistently doing 4-6 damage no matter what he was equipped with or where he was fighting until I got a Lightning Bow drop from the -real- basement area, and now he does like 20 damage.

Mage isn't built for melee combat at all. He's there for spells. Your only real options as a pure Mage are the Quarterstaff and the Assassin's Bow, if you can get one to drop. If you dual class him with Thief and make him the secondary class Wizard, he'll be allowed to equip bows though. Then you can give him another Lightning Bow(if you get one) and watch him cause havoc.

the first few times i leveled up it was easy to get a large amount of hp (i even got 14 one level!). that might have set my expectation a bit high but now i get so many 1's so many times in a row, reload after reload. . . i'd be happy with 2 or 3 at this point. i'm leaning toward just taking the 1's so i can move on and keep playing. always more ep to be gotten anyways ya know. is this my payback for being cheap?

i'm just concerned with what i might face on floor 3 as i haven't gotten there yet. i don't have any trouble at all with floor 2, and i can fight my way through basement pretty well. i have 2 warriors with 50 and 53 hp, a thief with 36, and a priest/mage with 34. my warriors in front have -5 ac with holy guardian. . . for those who know what lies ahead, should these stats carry me through ok?

ok, I'm on the third floor checked every room on the left hand and right hand of the map that I can access atm. That is unless there is a secret door. I have come upon a trap, I placed the jerky inside. Then I came upon a warrior guarding a shrine who asks me what business I have there. How do I proceed?

Leave the tower and check the trap again. You'll know what to do.

FYI: It seems that the Important Item actually has a use. And the lesson it teaches isn't the lesson we thought.

You have to clear the game first I was told.

Same story as almost everybody else. Approximately after two hours of playing i wandered to basement and group of graverobbers and mages got me there.

I got pwned by a group of thieves on the first floor in a room. I'm assuming I just need to level up more? Learning curve in this game is a little more than I expected.

Don't stray too far from the entrance until you've levelled up once. You can stray further if you picked the Sleep spell for your mage though - that thing is the most ridiculously useful spell in your arsenal for the first few floors, and it's still useful even in the late game. Heck, if you got Sleep, you can probably start farming the Basement at about level 3. Even if it's only a couple fights at a time, it's a huge amount of EXP per fight for where you are...

My first owning was getting attacked by a set of 6 of the stronger types of bats. Right near the entrance to the spire. It was painful. I was still level 1.

Right now I'm busy getting infuriated by the enemies in the second visit to the Basement. I'm pretty sure one of them has a partywide instant kill (Which would be INCREDIBLY infuriating if this game didn't have the ability to perma-save in the tower - I have to admit, it kinda makes the difficulty so much less threatening...)

I spent 2 days on the 3rd floor trying to figure out what to do. My charcters have every skill they can buy and are lvl 10 in their starting jobs and finaly I find out what I needed.

This game gives me a headache. I wish there was a luck stat.

1st Floor, I kill a bunch of goblins, and get a chest. It says it will be difficult to open. I say..."Sure...", as I hadn't had any problems so far in the tower. Fail the disarm, get blasted with a trap...instant death. :o :D

I have not underestimated the traps in this game, or anything else, since. :) I love the game, but it is rough sometimes.

I'm level 2 now, and exploring various portions of the first floor, the basement, and the second floor. Good stuff.

Well I seem to be stuck on the 1st, 2nd and basement floors. But I seem to be oddly enjoying not having any walkthrough to help my out -- this really is old school, maybe I'll check out the local BBS for tips.

Anyway, I seem to remember that there is a room with some odd writing in it but I failed to note its location. Now that I have ancient languages, can anyone give me the floor and coordinates for the room. Also, in the room with the doll, I tried to take it, what happens if you break it?

The only odd writing on the walls in floors 0-2 is grafitti. It's part of a quest you can take at the guild. Unless you're talking about the fountain, in which case it's towards the northwest portion of the first floor.

You're supposed to break the doll. You can't continue with that particular quest until you do break it.
