I saw the game but wasn't sure how it would be. I still have fond memories of River City Ransom and thought it might be fun but I've already got so many games on my plate as it is. So what do people think of it?

Please read my comments in the 'reviews' section. So far I agree with all of the reviewers, and I've read a lot of other people do to. In short, it feels more like a budget game then a proper game that had any business being localized.
Also, the fact that it's a brawler that sort of mimicks old-school brawlers doesn't excuse the way it plays. I've read that comment by some apologists who can't seem to remember how old school beat-em-ups actually used to be.

I personally love this games story, more than the gameplay.
Don't get me wrong, I had a good time beating down baddies, but every level I was thinking "I can't wait to get to the next cutscene! :P
I love all the jokes and frankly, I love Lewis.
He is the definition of "Bad ass cop"

IMO: only reason to own the game is because there's a character named Lewis Canon in it. Otherwise, it's really not very good.

Hey this game was awesome. Anyone who say's other wise HERE is obviously WAY to close minded to playing only RPG's I love beatum ups, This game reminded me a lot like the PS2 game YAKUZA, Like Yakuza portable lite. The story was great, The gameplay was FUN, and addicting. I sat there for hour playing the game.
But to each there own, and since this is a non traditional ATLUS release, I kinda figured most people would not care for it.

I guess having played all the Streets of Rage games(including the remake project), Sonic Blast Man, Captain Commando, the Bouncer, several Final Fights, and having a deep love affair with Dynasty Warriors, not to mention the various brawlers I've played and forgotten about means I don't really like brawlers at all.
I didn't like the game because the gameplay was poor. You have to wait far too long for thugs to get back up, it takes too long for you to get back up, and it's too easy for the big thugs to trap you in knockdown loops. Your gun is basically pointless, items seem completely irrelevant, and there's almost no differentiation between the characters(At least to the extent I played). It's not a very good brawler at all.
I still suggest buying it, though, because Lewis Cannon is the best name ever.

I kind of have to back up Gen here. Brawlers are probably my favorite genre. Unfortunately, Tokyo Beat Down is a pretty poor example of said genre. Comparing it to Yakuza is laughable. Sorry dude.

I really liked the games story and characters. But just like everyone here said, the gameplay is ackward. I would like to see a sequal though...but not on DS. The DS controls are really uncomfortable for a brawler.

Good story, pretty poor on the whole though!
