View Full Version : So What's The Longest You've Owned A Game Without Playing It?

I thought of creating this thread today when I was going through some of my older games on my shelf.
Here's a list of games I still have yet to actually play and how long I've had them.
Addams Family Values SNES (1995--My current record)
3 of the 4 original .hack games. (at release)
Shining Force Neo (at release)
Shining Force Exa (at release)
Legend of Alon D'ar (at release)
Infinite Undiscovery (a few months after release)
The original Strider that came with Strider 2 for the PS1
Wild Arms XF (a month or two after release)
Nights Wii (a month or two ago)
Maybe sometime soon, I'll tackle my handheld list a bit more. I'm so far behind on games I HAVE started too....
I would also say you should be able to count games you've popped in briefly to make sure they worked.

I usually play games for a couple of hours when I get them, but I left Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty untouched for at least a month. I also beat the tutorial and the first battle for the knight-leader character in Eternal Poison back in November, and haven't touched it since.
I'm much worse about this kind of thing with books.

Wow! I have a feeling no one is going to legitimately touch that.
Let's see. Off the top of my head:
Sega GT (DC) - a few months after its release.
La Pucelle Tactics - couple of months after its release
SRT OG2 - upon release
Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition - when it was first available
Karous DC - on release
Trigger Heart Exelica DC - on release
Phantasy Star Universe - on release
That is just a few that I can think of easily. I know there are many more unfortunately, but nothing like AFV from 95. ;)

Damn. 1995 is old. I can only think of two games that I have that haven't even been opened: Dark Stone for PSX (2001) and Donky Kong Country 3 for SNES (late 1996). I let my friend borrow my SNES. I got DK3 for my birthday, got it back from him, and discovered he'd broken either where the power plug-in goes into the SNES, or my power-plugin itself, so it never got touched.
Also, random note, Fester's Quest for NES is awesome.

Yeah, you shouldn't play that AFV game just so you can build on that record. FWIW, it's not a terrible game (it's the pseudo RPG one, right?) but you're not missing out. However... I'm tempted to say.... pics or it didn't happen! I want to see it SEALED, too.
I'm really far from your record since I try every game I buy for at least one hour before throwing it on the pile for X amount of years. But I just started playing Killer 7 (GC) for the first time since picking it up in early 2006. I should be thrown in jail for ignoring that game for so long.

The longest one I'm aware of is Grandia 3, which I bought day of release and which has only even been touched because I needed a shiny case to put my pre-owned copy of Nocturne in.

Persona 3 - bought it at launch but I had just moved to Japan. Finaly had my parents send up a PS2 last month. I bought FES and P4 at launch as well and P4 is still in the plastic.
Back in the mid-nineties I got a box of random Super Nintendo games from my grandma when she closed her rental place. A lot of them haven't been played, mostly sports titles and crap.

Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories is still unopened. I bought it on a whim at Toys 'R Us when it was cheap.

Shenmue II. 2 years. Mainly because I don't want to become one of the rabid fans clamoring for Shenmue III.

I still have GameBoy (original spinach green) games in shrinkwrap.

I'd say 2 years. I have some DS games from about 2 years ago that I haven't played yet. I also have like 12-15 games that I bought in the last year that I haven't played yet.

That you bought when they were first released? What titles?

Not at release iirc; I was too broke then but definitely not when they were in the bargain bins (I'm never this lucky to find good bargain bin treasure). But from the top of my head, the first Harvest Moon game (I think this was an original grey cart game), Harvest Moon 3 (this 'should' be a GBC exclusive game), and I think Samurai Showdown GB (it's either this or Toshinden GB, one of them I kept for myself and the other I gave as a present). They're nothing major nor anything worth selling on Ebay. :p
And checking HM's release date, 97, while it's on an old system, it was still a pretty 'recent' release. Oi, how time flies especially for a system with a 10 year life cycle.
But yeah, I'm pretty sure if I check my unaccounted for boxes, I'm pretty sure I'll find something like a sealed Madden 96 or something that I got for 5 bucks or something. :p
Fake edit: o snap, I forgot I still have a sealed copy of Castlevania Bloodlines; now I'm reminded I need a VC release of that. :(

Sega GT (DC) - a few months after its release.
You're missing out.
Coaster Works (DC) few years now
Conflict Zone (DC) picked this up for the intro movie alone - never played past it
Final Fantasy X-2 (PS2) picked this up when I saw it for cheap, thinking I'd play it after FFX. Never finished FFX. 3 years approx
Gitaroo Man Lives (PSP) feel bad about this one - picked it up for $5 about 5 or 6 months ago - never popped it in
There are a tonne more. Can't think off the top of my head, though.

What a crying shame. Final Fantasy X-2 is one of my favorite RPGs. The battle/job system is just a lot of fun. I would probably place it in my top five of all time for the Playstation 2.

Probably the PS1 Final Fantasy games which have remained unplayed since I bought them in 2003.

I'm sure I have some #### from the early 90's that I still haven't played.

Half my PS1 collection. I sold and traded away most of my original nes and snes stuff. Wasnt till I got a job and had more disposable income I could afford to buy games and not play them. Current oldest game I still have sealed is an import copy of Romance of the Three Kingdoms III for the megadrive CD from 93.

A few months, I usually open a game, play it to the first save point at least. But I bought Genji a few months ago and havent even played it yet.
Radiata Stories: 3 years (took me a year to take the shrinkwrap off)
Mana Khemia: 1 year
Super Paper Mario: 1 year? I think I got this christmas 07...
It's getting close to one year for DDS1, 2, and SMT3. I also have FFIV DS and Harvest Moon: Island of Happiness still in the shrinkwrap from christmas 08.

I have a few still in the wrapper and recently bought a few copies of those so I wouldn't have to open my existing games...Mana Khemia and Valkaria Chronicles.
I know I stopped playing FFVII as I got stuck on some part.. like in '97..
Most of the games I bought within a year still haven't been played.
Think it might be one of the Final Fantasy games Anthology or Chronicles..

Hmm... I don't remember how long it's been, but I know I have had several games that have been untouched other than being put on the shelf for several years. None of them go back to the mid-90s, though... the earliest might be late 90s...

I have no idea on this one without going home and digging into the collection. My memory doesn't go back that far! ;)

I think I might still have this PSX Spiderman game in a dark corner of my room... I should probably sell it and get that dollar I deserve!

I hear that all the time. I've always wanted to play it, but never got around to stomaching the rest of FFX.

Really? I would be more inclined to check it out if it had that classic arcade-like Sega racer feel.

Not really. It's a bit more simulation....y.
It feels more arcade like than something like Gran Turismo, though. A little more. Create a car mode was a lot of fun, too. It was a bit different than the usual Sega fare, and an obvious attempt to sway people from the GT series on the Playstation, but it had a lot of fresh stuff I liked. And considering I like Gran Turismo, this was welcome.
I always wanted to check out the XBox sequels, too.
