Not good, if it was IGN I wouldn't mind cause lately their reviews are just bad but gamespot....maybe I'm wrong. I'll try the game anyway.:(

I think the most complete review I saw was the 1up review (and follow up in the Retro blog). The game is very much like the old school 16-bit brawlers, and the complaint is that it doesn't do anything to try and update the formula. You run around, beat people up, grab weapons for more beat down, and eat food off the ground.

You forgot to post a link to the review.
BTW, it got a middle of the road C From 1up

I think both reviews are spot on, just that Gamespot's was a little more unforgiving.

Shame on 1up for comparing it to Turtles in Time, which had interesting enemies (it was all the same enemy, but they had different colors/actions/weapons), interesting stages, crisp graphics, repetitive but not nauseating gameplay, and co-op.

It's best to save your cash for non-budget titles like Devil Survivor or Knights in the Nightmare.

For all of Atlus's talent, they should be trying to tackle the biggest localization hurdle/beat-em-up there is: Kenka Banchou. There are 2 for the PS2 and a relatively new one for the PSP. It's a River City Ransom-style brawler with a great story of Japanese hoodlums and biker gangs (think a Japanese version of S.E. Hinton's books).

Yes, Kenka Banchou 3: Zenkoku Seiha is sweet! But it's by Spike and they don't exactly have a lot of ties to American publishers... DESPITE distributing a heck of a lot of American games in Japan, including last year's Bioshock.

Here's a trailer (http://playstation.joystiq.com/2008/09/16/kenka-banchou-3-zenkoku-seiha-landing-in-japan-november-27th/).

I wasn't really interested in Tokyo Beat Down. I like the idea, but I was never really into the genre. However, this thread turned my interest up when Kenka Banchou 3: Zenkoku Seiha was mentioned because I've never heard of it. After watching the trailer I would pick it up if I had a PSP.

looks like a good rental or a $9 purchase.

Finished the game....I give it a 4.5/10.

Controls: 4/10
Story: 5/10
Music: 7/10
Frustration playing the game: 8.5/10

Well there are worst games in the genre I'm sure, but this isn't really good enough. The game is somewhat interesting until ennemies start shooting, then it's frustrating, really frustrating. The Player Character(PC) has to be pretty much at the same height to hit the ennemy, same goes for the ennemies who're shooting. Going up and down is slow unless doing side-steps, that'll probably move the PC too far from ennemies. Then when the PC is shot one bullet, PC will fall to the floor every times, getting up takes a long time every time! A way around moving up or down to dodge the bullets is to Kick Slide, that is when the PC is not being shot by all the ennemies. Also those moves, Kick Slide and Shoulder Tackle serve only one purpose, pushing off the ennemies rolling on the ground with VERY MINIMAL damage, it also takes them long enough to get up. That's one thing that made the game frustrating.

One other thing that was frustrating, combos are basically worthless or dangerous for the Player Character(PC)! The PC will move through the ennemies often leaving one behind the PC, leaving an opportunity for the ennemy to hit you, while some of the other ennemies are getting pushed back. It doesn't occur too badly with normal goons, but when getting to a Boss it is unforgivable! Literally the punches and kicks will go through, making most boss fights a nerve wrecking battle. The most efficient way to beat a boss is by only pressing the punch button once, making combos useless.

It also reminds me that the shoulder buttons are quite unresponsive. Drawing out the gun can most of the times be a hassle, it happens for special attacks aswell.
I also found that the special force unit's gun graphic does not appear at all.

The gameplay is where, I guess, Atlus has no power over. Everything else that's not gameplay was well done, well not the story per se, but the localisation was nice.
