View Full Version : Dr Pepper or Pibb Xtra (formerly Mr. Pibb)

I'm a pretty big soda fan, for example if I'm eating a meal, I can't eat the meal without soda. I don't even like plain water or alcohol with meals, because it doesn't taste right to me.
Anyways, if you were to ask me if there was a "console war" version for sodas, it would be between Dr Pepper and Pibb Xtra, and it can be a very bitter one too. Many accept Pepsi and Coca Cola to have a distinct enough taste from each other to just accept them as they are. However Dr Pepper and Pibb have this weird thing where it taste different to many.
Mr. Pibb was created back in the early 1970s to compete with Dr Pepper, while many say Dr Pepper has more of a bite, and Pibb is more sweeter, the fans of these sodas are about religious to these drinks as Apple owners are to Apple products (as in Macs and ipods not the fruit).
Pibb isn't found everywhere, usually only in the south and certain spots in the midwest, Nevada and spots here and there on the east coast, so I wouldn't be surprised if many here never had it before. The drink is only available in the United States and Mariana Islands
Anyways, I'm curious for those who have tried both here. What do you like better? Dr Pepper or Pibb?
Personally I'm a massive Pibb fan, as I think it's the sweet nectar of the gods.

Dr. Pepper
I prefer Coca Cola, also, and that might explain why I prefer Dr. Pepper. Pepsi seems bit too sweet for my tastes and Coca Cola seems to bit more carbonated.

Doesn't matter to me.

We don't get Mr. Pibb in western Canada, but I've always been fond of Dr. Pepper.
I also want to add that I find Canadian Coke sweeter than Canadian Pepsi, which seems more tart. I suspect the difference is because HFCS is not as cheap up here as in America, so they've jiggled with the composition.
I live in the south. It's all Coke.
Kelvinc: As far as I know we get sugar instead of HFCS, which is a good thing on my book :) That's why I stay on coke.

This is the worst thread in the world and I will not partake.
...but Dr. Pepper is way better...

Pibb? PIBB!?
I'm not sure when this whole "Pibb Xtra" thing came about. I think I was much more fond of the drink when it was just Mr. Pibb. Does anyone know if they changed the formula when they renamed it? I have the sneaking suspicion that they did.
Of course, I understand WHY they renamed it; Dr. Pepper is gentleman's soda that went the extra mile and got its PHD. Mr. Pibb was clearly inferior.

^ Yeah, they added a "cinnamon" flavor. I've never tasted anything even somewhat like cinnamon in Pibb, but whatever.
Anyway, Dr. Pepper. Being from Texas, though, I have a natural bias.

Yah I Googled it for a bit: apparently many people think Canadian Coke is cane sugar only but someone wrote that they noticed a switch only last year (http://www.gomestic.com/Cooking/Coca-cola-The-Real-Thing.327681), and that's long after I had assumed Canadian coke did not have HFCS. Plus the cans I have at home say "sugar/glucose-fructose" and "glucose-fructose" is usually code for HFCS (cane sugar should be "sucrose"; "glucose-fructose" is as accurate a name for sucrose as "hydrogen-oxygen" for water).

I hate soda with a passion... but I'm more or less addicted to energy drinks. Go figure.

Pibb Xtra and Dr Pepper are quite different from each other in terms of taste. Funny thing is, the people that dislike Dr Pepper, generally like Pibb, and vice versa. If you ever come across Pibb, you should at least give it a shot. ;)

My favorite drink was a Sobe soda called Mr. Green, it was so good, but then those Sobe bastards canceled it ;_;

I think I'll just stick with Jones Soda, seeing how Coca Cola's being a cheap ass with HFCS, at our expense. (Off-topic: psychetruth in YouTube has an extensive video collection of HFCS).
Oh yeah, while I'm at it, I'll just buy a Mexican Coca Cola at my local Mexican bakery, seeing how they don't have HFCS.

I only drink water, coffee, and occasionally tea (iced or otherwise). I avoid all other liquids.

We can get Coca Cola in a bottle with cane sugar here.

Hm, I guess I normally prefer Dr. Pepper, but when I'm at Steak and Shake I always get the PIbb Xtra with cherry syrup in it. Now THAT is a drink from the heavens. ^_^

I don't do juice. Or fruit for that matter. Hell, I avoid ingesting most plant life if at all possible! :D

I've tried both, and I don't like either. They taste only slightly different to Coke/Pepsi, but that's probably just my inexpert taste buds' opinion. The only soda I like is Sprite/Mountain Dew/Sierra Mist/etc. and Grape and Orange sodas.

Hmm... I've had both, and can have either, but I have Dr. Pepper much more often. I guess it helps that a few restaurants around here have Diet Dr. Pepper on the fountain, and I always lean toward diet sodas for the less sweet taste.

Dr. Pepper for the win! It might be my favorite soda of all time.

I think I'll just stick with Jones Soda...
Jones Soda, at least the cola variety, tastes much like I imagine liquefied cancer tastes. Their cream soda is alright (though IBC and A&W are better).

I find that the Jones flavours that you can't easily find in other brands to be the best, which might be an indictment suggesting that they can't stand actual competition.
Even though I do love Dr. Pepper, I admit that it was an acquired taste. I tried it the first couple of times on recommendation and didn't really enjoy it at that time, but it's grown on me.

I don't care for Dr. Pepper or Mr. Pibb unless I'm eating at Taco Bell or Taco John's for some reason....It goes really well with that food.

Try it with rum. As I already said, it made SoCo a lot more palatable too.

I haven't drank soda in years, but when I did, Dr. Pepper was definitely my favorite; and interestingly enough, I thought it was the grossest soda ever before I came to like it.

thanks kaki, for making me sound like an alcoholic. ;) though, to be honest, i don't think i've EVER used it as a mixer since i don't like it as a drink alone. same with like .. mountain dew, but the thought of that as a mixer makes me kind of barfy, too. i'll stick with good old soda water, please. or juice.
sickle, come party! we'll tornado together. i just like to dance!!
