View Full Version : How much harder is the original Etrian compared to the second?

Well, I'm becoming re-addicted to EOII, and when I looked up the original I found that there are no force points. For me, at least, this would make it very hard for me to beat bosses because I always force grind to kill them. What other differences are there? And how is the overall difficulty compared to the second? I know that in the original, resetting your skill points set you back ten levels instead of five, but not much else.
There is a roughly equivalent system called "BOOST" but it only makes skills somewhat stronger and it doesn't really offer the unique characteristics of force attacks.
I wouldn't call it a lot harder so much as a lot clunkier. The balance is a lot worse in that game, requiring you pretty much to run a couple skills and classes in every party to get through most boss encounters (immunize comes to hand) and the classes dont have quite as much synergy as they do in EO II. Level cap on it is a hard 70, as well.
I guess that means that it is a lot harder. But.... I don't see it as a hard Nocturne type challenge in so much as a poorly balanced one.
Having recently played 1, and being currently playing 2, I think 2 is pretty much 1 perfected. It is an incredible evolution and I think I'd have trouble going back to 1 at this point.
1 is also missing the Beast, Gunner and War Magus classes. Let me know if you have any particular questions about it.
Don't get me wrong, I throughly enjoyed 1, it's just after 2 I don't see why I'd ever go back. There isn't much of a plot, either.

^So would you say I should just wait for The Dark Spire/Class of Heroes instead of playing EO? It would be a little hard to find (Etrian Odyssey), since the GS website doesn't have a "Used" listing, but I could always go Amazon.
I think that, unless you are a hardcore completionist, then thats what I'd do. Looking forward to both of the mentioned games, too :)
Not to say that if you come across it cheap you shouldn't pick it up, but 2 is just a much much better game and there really is not a lot of plot, so.
I hope spire and class are awesome. Particularly looking forward to the later.

The game is more rougher around the edges than outright harder.
There is a roughly equivalent system called "BOOST" but it only makes skills somewhat stronger and it doesn't really offer the unique characteristics of force attacks.
Boost pretty much adds an extra 5 levels to whatever skill you're using; obviously it doesn't effect item usage.
I guess that means that it is a lot harder. But.... I don't see it as a hard Nocturne type challenge in so much as a poorly balanced one.
If anything it's EO2 that is more poorly balanced in the sense that regular Attacks have a base accuracy of 90 per cent and it drops even more for bash damage weapons; at least that's how I feel it is. Skills have a higher base accuracy.

Play it now; both of those games aren't coming out for another month which is more than enough time to play one of the EO games.

One convenience the second one offers is the ability to warp every third level, instead of just to the beginning of each stratum.

^Thanks for the help, guys. I think I'll order EO off of Amazon and try to finish it off before some other games come out.

hello everyone :)
im looking for a new ds rpg and EO2 looks pretty neat, just have some questions beforehand :)
1. ive started playing EO1 for a while and really liked it, till i realised, the skills i gave my tank where pretty useless (like provoke10). are the skills in EO2 actually doing what they say, like provoke etc.?
2. are there still only 3 partybuffslots?
3. does poison and other debuffs work on boss-enemies?
thanks in advance :)

hello everyone :)
Ahoy hoy.
1. ive started playing EO1 for a while and really liked it, till i realised, the skills i gave my tank where pretty useless (like provoke10). are the skills in EO2 actually doing what they say, like provoke etc.?
More or less yes, however the Protector is gimped in a few ways but beefed up in one single way: his Force skill (single turn invulnerability that always triggers before everyone else).
2. are there still only 3 partybuffslots?
Yes, as well as 3 debuff slots.
3. does poison and other debuffs work on boss-enemies?
Yes, but just about all bosses and FOEs have high resistance to all ailments (poison, paralyze, etc) and binds. Debuffs (attack down, def down, etc), not so much.
