And then FFXII beats out FFX. Now a lot of people don't like FFXII, but most can agree that it's better than FFX.

This is the worst list.Well, I personally think FFX is better than FFXII because of everything RPGFan said about it. FFXII had a terrible story in my opinion. Heck, FFXII: Reverent Wings does better.


...Where's Persona 4 and Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne? :question: I'm happy with FFX, SMT: DDS2, KHII, and Skies of Arcadia though. I'm happy with P3 FES too, although I think that spot deserves P4 since that game is a better version of P3.

A reminder that this current console generation has been pure ass when it comes to RPGs.

Yeah, a few WRPGs here and there, but still. So lame. I'm sure in some way it's Sony's fault.

Nah, I think PS2's era had many great RPGs, but this list is definitely not representative of that.

edit : It was also the advent of portable consoles as great RPG platforms IMO, though I guess it doesn't fall in the console category by their standards.

Eh, I think a few of those games deserve to be on the list, but most of them don't. This list is a pretty good example of why I don't bother visiting RPGFan anymore.

Nocturne, amirite?! I'm sure that's all this topic will turn into. Personally, I've never finished the game, since the loading times became just to much to bear. After about 10 hours I just couldn't take it anymore.

You probably got one of the deffective copies that have much longer load times and lag during battle like I did with my first copy. I know of at least a few others that had this problem.(one other was forum member Maddy I think) The battles seemed lightning fast in comparison when I got a normaly working copy.

I had heard stuff about messed up copies, but I never really looked into it. I've tried multiple times to get through it, but it's just not worth it. And I really don't trust the clicking noises my Playstation 2 makes when I try to run it.

I guess I should grab another copy sometime in the future, since I'd really like to finish it up.

Eh, mostly agreed. I didn't expect Nightmare of Druaga to make it. SO3 was a lot of fun to me. Skies of Arcadia definitely belongs in that list.

Also I just realized I own all the games on that list, but I've only beat 2 (KOTOR and FF12). Came close to beating FFX before my friend got my ####ing memory card stolen along with his PS2. I really need to get back to playing DDS2.

Damn, alot of P3 love on that list. I haven't played any other PS2 SMTs so I can't really give an opinion on the matter. Do look forward to playing DDS though! It sounds like Nocturne will snap my back in two where as DDS will just require some IcyHot pads.

I'm not a fan of KH though. I guess I just don't "get" the series. I tried the original but didn't really get that enamoured with it.

I'm going to try being polite for a change. I have my top 10 list, they have theirs. As many have voiced their opinions, aparently I am not alone in seeing things differently. That said, kudos for them. I still dont take much stock in the opinions of review sites though.

While I can't agree with some choice in this list(not a big fan of KH2,FF12 or DQ8 ) I can at least understand why they are on this list but Star ocean 3 in a top 10 seem very wrong(mostly because of the crazy plot twist and some very annoying character), imo shadow hearts covenant,persona 4,SMT nocturne or suikoden V should at least replace SO3 in this list

I sure hope so. I'm all for a difficult game, but if it's hard to the point of being unenjoyable then I'll put it down.

Then again, I did beat Persona 2...and people were saying the same things about its difficulty, so I'm unsure.

Only game I liked in the Zelda series was the first one - never got into the other games in the series.

But yea, that list is depressing. KH2 is a good game, but as one of the best of the "6th Generation"? Is the list trying to imply that it was a terrible time for RPGs? Where's the Disgaea series? Where's Nocturne (great game - finally got some time in on that this past weekend)?

But if you check out the individual editors' top 5 picks, many of them have great things to say about the Digital Devil Saga games, and one of them even has Nocturne in there.

I think people need to agree with what a RPG actually is. Just because it has health increases, new weapons, and you play the game as a certain character doesn't make the game an RPG. I've never felt Zelda to be a RPG, but RPG confusion seems to be spreading like wildfire these days. I can't even count on both hands how many times I've heard games such as God of War and Prince of Persia called an RPG.

Anyways, like most people here, I disagree with almost all of the opinions on RPGfan's listings. There's a severe lack of Phantasy Star Online.

P.S.: If we ever made a top 10 listing, we could just do a point system on everyone's top 5 of that certain genre. That way everyone will have their say, but majority wins. It's not necessarily the best way, but I've always liked that system.
