This game isn't as good as I thought it would be.

Wasn't it more difficult back in the TG-CD era? I heard from a friend that you couldn't attack someone head on and that you had to go around the enemies and hit them from the side or behind or something to that effect. Never had the TG-CD (might have to add the PC Engine Duo to my shopping list for the trip next year)
^ Yeah, an angle or from the back was the prefered way you just bonk things to death

I didn't mean difficulty, I meant overall.

Does anyone know if Atlus will be putting out a strategy guide? I did play this game many years ago but I really don't remember too much and a guide would make this game much easier.

I got demolished by a Worm....
Putting it on a lower diffaculty makes me feel newbish. I usually start all games on Hard or Expert =3
How long is this game? It feels like it's going to be farly short...

Wow you're one gutsy lady!! I've been playing it on normal mode and I'm having a bit of a hard time. Not so much with the battles but figuring out what comes next.
The 1st book is shorter than the 2nd one but so far I don't think it's too short. I guess it's really up to the player and how fast that person can get thru the game. I'm now playing in the tower and I'm not exactly sure what comes after that or if I'm at the end part of the game.

This is my first time playing this game. I honestly never heard of Ys before this game was announced a while back. I finally picked up my preorder today, and started playing it. So far so good. I got to the part where I met with the fortune teller, Sarah. She told me to go on a journey to find a book.
I got a ring from the pawn shop in Minea, and had a feeling that it would be a key item. I talked to everyone in town, like I usually do in rpgs, and found that a guy with one eye was looking for it. He gave me my money back, and then some. But what's really strange is that I somehow ended up at lvl 3, even though I was at lvl 1 when I gave him the ring. Did he give me exp, or was that just a glitch? Weird.
Anyways, the battles seem to take some getting used to. I'm also playing it on normal, because I refuse to play anything on easy. I never play games on hard the first time around, so I'm likely to start with normal. I'm also using the stylus control, since I'm really comfortable using it in most games(even those where people complain about the stylus control for whatever reason).
I found that if I hit the enemy from the side or behind, I'm ok, but if I hit the enemy head on, I'm ripped to shreds. I just bought some equipment, a sword, some armor and a shield. Of course, I'm back to having no money, but it's a start. I haven't tried fighting with equipment yet(should be a bit easier), but I'll most likely play some more tomorrow.

So I borrowed this game, and I am not sure I should buy it... other than for the sweet OST.
Does anyone know if the 2nd game is much longer than the 1st? I am worried that I would be done with the game within a week if I do break down and buy it.
The only part I found difficult was figuring out what to do next at certain parts, or spending an hour scanning the entire world just to find that all I had to do was talk to someone/something again because the conversation will go differently now that a side quest has been done that I had no idea would connect, but after makes sense... and then I feel stupid. :p
I like the game. I wish there wasn't a max level, or rather I wish it wasn't reached within 2 hours or so... but I guess if the game is short, that plays a part in its length.

Ys II improves upon its predecessor in every possible way. It's also much longer, but can still be beat in less than 6 hours the first time around.

Well I guess I will buy it. You sold me. Even tho, I normally wouldn't buy a game for 6 hours, this one is kind of charming in little ways.

Well I am officially addicted to this game now.
But yeah, a level cap is so archiac.

Personally the new sword-swinging system became second nature in a matter of minutes. It's not that different from the recent PC Ys games. But I still much prefer shooting fire in Ys 2.

Not completly sure but after completing a couple quests I couldn't put it down, I'm looking forward to Ys II.

That is exactly what happened to me.
"Hmm, not so sure about this game..."
Hours later, I am staying up all night, have to get up for work in a few hours, but I kept saying, I only have one more floor to go, lol. I borrowed it, and now I have to buy it today, so I can beat Book II.

Admittingly, for me, most of the game has been painfully easy, though that may also be because I put Easy as the difficulty. The part that makes me glad I picked this, though, are the bosses. Right now, I'm stuck at the snake boss; any advice on this one? After dying about 10 times, I went to some FAQs, and none of them help. (Running in circles makes it go pow, pow, pow, dead to me, and the silver sword is not where they say it is, or at least, isn't gotten how they say it is.) Leveling is no longer an option, as every other boss made me go out of my way to buy better stuff, thus gaining more levels in the process.

*Spoiler* It is just the strategy I used for the snake boss.
Yea, run in small circles, so that the snake slows down by getting caught on itself, and then hit the mid to tail end sections with your sword.
I do not believe you are far enough to get the silver sword. You have to get past the abandoned mine first I believe.

Well I just polished off book II this weekend and I gotta say, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. It left me wanting more.

I'm now close to the end of the first Ys game(I'm on the 10th floor of the Dahm tower). I thought it was amazing so far. Not bad for a game that's apparently older than I am. I kind of wish that it came with an artbook that included more of the old vs new screenshots that were in the instruction manual. For some reason I find that stuff fascinating. But a 30 song soundtrack is also an amazing extra.
As for the actual games, I'm actually kind of glad that they're short. I'm still finishing up the Journey in P3:FES, and have exceeded 156 hours of gameplay. P3 is one of my absolute favourite rpgs, but it gets kind of tedious after that many hours. Legacy of Ys is short and sweet, so I won't end up having to toss it aside on occasion to play something else.
On a side note, I'm still saddened by the loss of Sarah. It pains me everytime an incredibly hot female dies. I think the culprit was the main villain. Clearly he isn't straight or else he would have kept her around, but he certainly needs to be taught a lesson. At least Feena and Reah are still around. I think Feena may have been captured again though(someone was, but I'm guessing that it's her).
Well, I'll be done with the first book soon enough, and I hear that the second book is better. Since the only aspect of Book I that I didn't like was the loss of an attractive redhead, I think it's reasonable to say that I really enjoyed it. Hopefully Book II will be just as enjoyable.

I just got the game, and I'm 2 hours in. I'm level 17, and am currently on the 3rd floor of the first dungeon. I have all of the highest equipment I could find (Reflex, Large Shield, Long Sword), and it is a bit easy. Of course, I'm playing on Easy, but I usually do, if I can. I'm thinking of playing on the hardest mode for Ys II for a lot more of a challenge. It's very fun, although the angle of Mountain Path makes me nauseous.
EDIT: But what's really strange is that I somehow ended up at lvl 3, even though I was at lvl 1 when I gave him the ring. Did he give me exp, or was that just a glitch? Weird.
He gives you 150 EXP, like when you accept the quest to find the Book of Ys, and the fortune teller gives you 100 EXP.
