I've seen a video on YouTube of the gameplay but I'm still a bit fuzzy. Does it play like an SRPG until you engage an enemy, then turn to turn-based? Or what?

That sounds about right.
From what I've read, you move around on the field until you attack. When that happens, you enter a first-person turn-based battle with you and two demons/devils against the enemy until one team dies.

I think that's how it works. I visited the Japanese site and saw footage of Yuzu engaging Pixie. She moved into the square directly in front of Pixie, and locked into a first person battle with her. She defeated her in one hit, but that's no surprise, since it's pixie we're talking about.
I haven't played any SMT games outside of the Persona series, but I'm assuming that devils = personas. Pixie is a persona, so I guess some of the same beings are devils in this game. But they're also enemies? Strange. I guess I'll have to see how it plays out. I checked out a video on that "demon auction" feature, but I wonder if there's another way to acquire "devils". I guess I'll have to wait and see.
Anyways, here's the link, in case you haven't already seen it:

Alright, that makes sense. I couldn't tell if it was an auto-battle sort of thing once you engage an enemy or not.

You should do some research into the whole SMT-universe. The Persona-series is a offspring of the general SMT-series and as such have the freedom to change some things; like calling the usual SMT demons - like Pixie - a persona. Normally demons are enemies and recruitable partners in the SMT-universe, but since the Persona-series represents facets of the human psyche, developers Koei thought it would be interesting to use the demons solely as "partners" or Persona.

^That is what I was kind of assuming he meant. Just that he is confusing the publisher for the developer.

So they're usually called demons? Wow, I guess I should do some research, and play more SMT games. I'm also thinking of checking out that Devil Summoner game that's being released on ps2. If I see any older SMT titles available at my local eb games, I might check them out as well.

*slaps self* Thank you for pointing that mistake out, dunno where I left my brain at the time I wrote that. And I believe a DW take on SMT would be the absolute fall of the SMT-series. *shudder*
Anyway, Tross, I highly recommend you look into some more SMT games if you love the Persona-series. The other games, like Digital Devil Saga and the main series, are quite different from Persona but still very interesting and entertaining.

I don't know specifically about a strict SMT:DW approach - but I think a good game with en masse combat could be had quite easily. and I do think the backdrop of SMT allows for MANY good game styles that have not been explored.
Imagine a hybrid of Digital Devil Saga and 99 Nights in a huge demonic campaign... and maybe throw in a bit of Folklore.
I could see it as being added to the "How did the demons rally from Makai to Earth" part of the story. and, personally, I would buy it. You play the Yokai that rallies forces to earth, for or against humans. You have factions based on the different Races, and develop your character among them, and find heroic units of those races.
In the Law and Chaos endings, it could be that the MC Yokai becomes Philemon or Nyarlothotep. In the neutral ending, he disappates into Shadow - and thus into Persona. This is because he is so willing to abide by humanity's stake in determining their own fate that he simply lends himself to their will, however they exercise it.

Interesting story. I just fail to see how a completely different ideology like Persona can be fused with the old, demonic ways of SMT. I don't think fans are ready for that mux-up. I know I aint, I think both doing that and the general idea of a Ninety-Nine Nights/Dynasty Warriors take on SMT are just horrificly stupid and degrading. I admit I have no love for the mass-fighting of those games and as such can't be neutral in this subject, but I think it would be very sad if SMT got mixed into all that mess.

Here, if anyone is interested, more Devil Survivor gameplays.

The videos again are not a good quality ones, since this time I edit them with movie maker (which tends to screw the resolution of the videos to some sort of full screen >_< )
Anyway, their purpose is just to show how the game looks, so I wasn't aiming for a good quaility video though.

Huh... that's interesting music in the gameplay 4 - fusion video. That can't be the real BGM in the game, right? Then again, I guess it wouldn't really surprise me if it was...
Concerning the other two videos it hits me how boringly static the demons appear in combat. I guess it is reminescent of ol' times SMT, but I would have liked to see them animated, at least with 2-3 different frames, the DS should be able to handle that. I am intrigued by the auction part though, even if it still is shrouded in behind japanese letters and short show-time.

^Yes, now that you mention it, they do look to static, just like the demons in Soul Hackers and Devil Summoner, in the snes/psx/GBA version they at least looked like they were breathing and blinking.

Amazing.
Humans vs. Law Demons vs. Chaos Demons in gigantic brawler-esque battles.
FUND IT.

Uh, he should be an allusion to the god of light in Norse myth, Baldur...
Anyone who knows how to defeat him may figure out the reason.
It's the only thing that can hurt and even kill Baldur.
BTW, it makes me quite annoyed because the image of Baldur in this game destroyed my good impression toward this deity.

Yeah I kinda agree on this one. Except for 7th Dragon, the battles there feel incredibly fresh. I'd have prefrerred to be able to see my demons in battle but oh well.

I'm completely neutral on first-person battles. They don't annoy me any more than third-person ones. Actually, I have a hard time seeing how people can have a definite preference. :P Maybe I'm too easygoing on stuff like that, hahaha...
I do see the appeal, though. Whenever I play SMT1 (which I haven't yet sat down and pushed through seriously), I do like that my imagination gets a lot more active in those sorts of fights, whereas the modern third-person battle pretty much fills in all the blanks.
