Since this game is confirmed to not be getting the wretched hack job the PS1 version got, does anyone know if Atlus is planning on keeping the original Japanese names? I really hope they go back to the Japanese script...

I'm pretty sure ATLUS is going to stay as close to the Japanese version as they can on this one.

If the last round of SMT games on PS2 and any forthcoming game on other platforms is an indication, I think we're safe from it being that westernized.

I doubt they would give them their americanized names, i prefer maki>mary and masao>mark any day.
Heck i prefer japanese masao to black mark even more lol.

Strange though it may seem, everyone in the Japanese version of P1 actually called Masao "Mark." It was his nickname.

I hope they change nothing---that would be awesome. Dead serious.

The American PS1 version of Persona 1 is the one that had changes compared to the Japanese version

The new names really weren't that bad. But I would definitely like to see them keep the original portraits(which I'm sure they will).

I'd rather have more complete portraits, ala P3/4, but of course by the original artist instead.

Then import it, because I know all that english text won't be in the japanese version, either. (Yes, I'm being a smartass. Don't take me seriously.)
I don't really remember anything about names or whatever. I'm just glad to finally understand what the whole Snow Queen thing was about. Is it really that great or are we just putting it on a pedestal because we never got it in the PS1 release?

I think it's about 1/3 of the game, though it was one of 2 paths after a certain point excluding endings.
I doubt Atlus would do gratuitous changes this time around. If everyone in the Japanese one calls Masao Mark then Mark is the used name in the Japanese one anyway. I prefer Maki, but I am guessing Mary is/was actually meant to be an allusion to some other famous Mary somewhere.
As long as no asian characters turn black and there is actually a real ending in this one and a snow queen dungeon I'll be happy.
Then again it would be hilarious to see Atlus swap the character portrait art for generic CG :) (Star Ocean xbox reference)

I'm going to miss Mark being black. This game was so influential in my earlier gaming that I have trouble imagining him as anything else now. True story.

At least they're sticking as close to the JapaNese as possIble, unlike Some other compAnies I cannot name, for fear of divine retribution.

I really wish they could give us the option of using black Mark's portrait. But really, anything (even a blank space or a magic marker character portrait) would be better than having to look at the abomination that is Japanese Mark.

Atlus Japan are the developers and Atlus USA are only the localizer and distributor; Hell im sure the names will be copyrighted for the SMT. And id strongly prefer japanese names.

I would like the black Mark, just because.
Plus the original one looked... shady or something.
I do want to play this game.
