Maybe Sony themselves? They had the "Destination Playstation" even where they announced a ton of PSP games (LBP, Rock Band, Assassin's Creed, MotorStorm, etc.).
This is gonna be one quick translation!

This much, at least. I never played DS so I can't really say, but after playing P2:EP the desire to play IS is ridiculous.
Plus, I heard Tatsuya can get a contact where he makes motorcycle noises, which sounds almost as awesome as the "AHHHHH! Alcohol is my life!" contact in EP :D

Saw this on IGN this morning before I received the Atlus email and smiled.
I will buy this, even though I probably will not be able to play it for... who knows how long.
Heck - I even bought the PS P2 Eternal Punishment release a few months ago and haven't had a chance to open the plastic.

no, a remake seems like a great idea for a portable system (it's an old game after all, and the PSP is far more powerful than the PSone). besides, handhelds are all the rage in Japan. though Persona 5 should be on a current gen system (PS3). though if Atlus were to do it on PS2(I wouldn't be surprised) it should at least have Pro scan, widescreen. but that's just what I (a CRAZY fan) wants.

Great news!
One request for Atlus, can you please tone down the language compared to Persona 4? Kanji swearing every other sentence when he was mad was a obsessive.
I remember reading an interview where they said they did tone it down... he used to be dropping f-bombs, which is something any guy his age, especially one who's seen as a delinquent, would do in the English speaking world.
Really, his almost complete lack of "serious" cursing was getting close to the "unnatural" threshold for me, but maybe that's just because of the people I hang out with... :P
That's the tough part about writing dialogue... on one hand, you can't have all of the tangents, redundancies, and useless phrases that fill up a disturbing proportion of anyone's normal speech pattern (for dramatic and comprehension reasons), on the other, well-used cursing takes on a rhythm of its own that's hard to replicate any other way. :D

Any hope at all to see Persona on the Sony Store on the PS3 at least? Or maybe a PS3 or PS2 format combo disc of the first two Personas? I want so badly to play the first two games but have such a hard time finding them. A revamp and re-release of the games is more than exciting, but I am not a PSP owner sadly.

I second that! I've been trying desparately to find the horrible localization for PS1 that we got, just to complete my collection. And now it's being rereleased for PSP with a real localization :(
Between the PSP I need to get for Persona 1 and the DS for that new Devil Survivor and and XBox 360 so I can play the latest Star Ocean my wallet is crying. :very_sad:

Atlus USA staffers are master trolls. I almost thought I was dealing with Sakurai again for a minute there.
Earlier today, I checked the forum and this subforum was up with a big NEVER in the sidebar. I thought it was hilarious, and in hindsight I wish I had screencapped it. That was brilliant trolling.

Haven't played the first two. Kind of surprised they are actually localizing this. I was kind of worried after Devil Summoner and thought Sony would get in the way. Now that P4's been quite a big success, maybe we can get away with wishing for more. Preordered yesterday! ...twice. :) Or at least, whenever GameStop decides to update their systems. Forgot I haven't preordered Devil Survivor yet. O_O Will have to take care of that when I secure my copy of P1.
Next, maybe we could get our hands on P2: IS and EP for the PSP. Maybe as one wholly remastered game. Will pay extra!

Holy frigggin YEAH! Even though I have the original, I'm for sure pre-ordering this. Not 'import it from states and get it next day for a ginormous price' kind of pre-order, but I'll pre-order if Amazon.ca gets their link up and running.
I'm just wondering how this relocalization is going to work, in particular with the names. After all, P2:EP still keeps the 'butchered' first names of P1's cast but just adds their original last names. Wonder if the relocalization will follow that or if they'd go for the true name.
Now if we only get Growlanser PSP as welll... *hint*hint*nudge*nudge* ;)

This is great news indeed, I've been waiting for the announcement although I didn't expect it to be this soon :D
On a side note, I'm currently wandering if Atlus intended to announce the game together with the AAA 2009 PSP line up. It seems to be a little more delayed than all the other PSP announcements (since it wasn't announced together with the rest). Was Atlus too busy? because it would have warmed my heart to see Persona listed together with Sony's hardcore PSP lineup :)

Psft! Like I'd sell my copy. I can't wait for this, new and improved Persona. Keep it up Atlus!:)
Seriously... I joined the forum just so I could post my excitement. I fell in love with Persona 1 way back when it was first released. I never would have expected a new version to make it to the U.S.! I think the demon conversations were way more interesting and developed than in Persona 2, there are still conversations I remember from it. And besides, CHRIS RULES~!
Thank you Atlus for being so awesome!

As a PSP owner at last I feel the joy of having a great old school RPG. I hope the Snow Queen quest would be available this time around. Seen the videos on YouTube and it looks HOT!
p/s: if persona 2: Tsumi is translated, it'll be great!! i've played it once and if Atlus translates it, it'll be just cool

Friend of mine and I had been speculating when this announcement would be made. Just didn't make any sense not to bring it over. Anyway, is Amazon the best place to order it from? I would prefer that Atlus get as much as possible from the sale since they don't sell directly. Just thought I'd ask. Can't wait for this and the two other SMT games this year!

I knew I had a feeling that the NA version will come this fall. Nicely done Atlus USA. Another classic game. No doubt about it. ^^
What a quick announcement! Atlus USA sure loves us to the extent that they heard all our cries over the Persona game for the PSP. I'm excited as ever. ^^
Now is my time to witness the origins of the game which I considered one of the best. :D

Dang, this is the first game that has made me want to buy a PSP, I would love to play the first persona and see where it all started...
Oh well, guess I'll just be looking at screen shots to get my fill. lol.
But man, Atlus is all over the place this past month or so. First SMT: DS RKvKA, then Devil Survivor and now Persona. I'm impressed, now if there were only plans for an SMT for the PS3 I would be so happy XD

Yay! Thanks Atlus! Having played the original release many moons ago and not understanding alot of what I was doing at the time I look forward to this newly updated offering. You guys rock!
Darn it, Atlus. Well, not you guys bringing it over, it's not your fault somebody thought it was a good idea to make it for the PSP for what, a few extra cutscenes, over the actual audience on the DS (I'm sure it could be done at the very least w/o cutting from the original on the higher memory DS carts).
Bleh, I'll have to think this over. As much as I DO want this, the PSP makes it really, really hard to justify buying it, what with like 90% of the good games for it being ports of games I already own anyway or having been ported to the PS2 in an attempt to actually make a profit. It's NOT region locked, is it? And is there anything at all significant coming up for the system at all? Bleh, seriously, not cool Atlus.

I have more than enough money for one, I just don't like the idea of spending the money for an entire SYSTEM for one remake. Heck, I'm likely to buy a DSi on launch, but I've never had even the vaguest interest in a PSP. It's just annoying that Atlus would shun such a massive amount of their consumer base for a few added features. Look at the number of people ON THIS THREAD that have either said "Darn it, I don't have a PSP so I can't get this" or "Darn it, now I have to buy a PSP".

Anyways, day one.
No trolling involved. Every forum has a link to the last post in the "Last Post" field. For a new forum that has no posts yet, the "Last Post" field says "NEVER" because, well, there never have been any posts in it. It only said that for a couple minutes while the announcement thread was being composed.

And is there anything at all significant coming up for the system at all? Bleh, seriously, not cool Atlus.
No, nothing significant coming out for the PSP at all. No Assassin's Creed, no Rock Band (read, Frequency/Amplitude), no FF: Dissidia, no Persona, no Madden, no Resistance Retribution, no Little Big Planet, nothing...
Not even a Hammerin' Hero.
Um, Mank, Sony at Destination Playstation dropped games for just about every genre for the system. Welcome to 2009, the "PSP has no games" mantra isn't true anymore. The PSP doesn't have the droves of games that the DS has, but most of the games are of pretty high quality.

That was actually meant as a question, so thank you for answering it. Still, a LOT of that is far from my interests... Persona's something... and FF:Dissidia MIGHT be worth something (Is it out in Japan yet and if so how has it been recieved), although I'm still a little upset that they didn't go with Faris or Gilgamesh for V... I honestly have NOT been keeping up with upcoming releases for the system, so thanks for the update. I'll have to see how this summer plays out for me, anyway, to see whether or not I have any reason to pick up the system, depending on what comes out, how they turn out, what's announced, and how much cash I actually have to spare...

Sorry, the initial sound of the message got the "DS vs PSP flaming" nerve in me fired up. :) And this is looking like a banner year for the PSP with the amount of things coming up for it. If Rock Band is Frequency rebranded that immediately jumps up on my radar as a must get. Both Frequency and Amplitude were great games and the bridge between the Benimi games from Konami and the current set of Rock Band/Guitar Hero games (I won't mention Rock Revolution... yikes) that are filling shelf space up with plastic instruments.
The lineup for the system looks incredible, and I'm surprised when I track exactly how much I use it for games, because it seems like it's gathering dust. I think the most shocking thing is the diversity of the lineup. The above list doesn't even include Parasite Eve III (Third Birthday) which I'm actually looking forward to more than FFXIII Agito. I miss Aya Brea. :)
@Vincent Alexander
A whole lot of awful? Really? Having games which reach out to every main genre of gamer is awful?
Racing games? Motorstorm
Fighting games? Dissidia
RPGs? Persona/Third Birthday/FFXIII Agito
Platformers? Little Big Planet
Action Adventure? Assassin's Creed
Tween games? Hannah Montana
Casual games? Petz
FPS? Resistance
It's not that they're awful, it's that they're shotgunning this thing to try to appeal to gamers of all ages, both genders, and all likes. No one's going to get everything they announced. No one's going to like everything they announced. Most people are going to react with the same "some good with a lot of awful" reaction, but there's a strategy involved, which is that the opinions of many in what's in the good and awful piles will be completely different.

The PSP has no shortage of awesome games, you just have to look.
And for racing, your best bet is either Wipeout or Initial D: Street Stage(import).
Beyond that, there's DJ MAX(best portable music game around; import and US), MGS Portable, Dracula X, Lumines, Yggdra Union, Riviera, Silent Hill 0, FFT, Valkyrie Profile, etc.
The system does have something for everyone.
Amazing! It sort of makes me wish I actually had a PSP. I can't wait to see how Mark's new and improved look as the only African American in Japan will come out.

Haha, really, am I the only one that thought Mark was awesome black? My 2nd fav. character behind Chris. I can understand hating the fact they changed the content of a game so much to appeal to the West, but the Japanese "Mark" looks damn annoying to me... like some high pitched stoner little brother. Doesn't seem suited to wield an axe. And besides, white Mark looks like he would be a TERRIBLE dancer! Certainly, not a seductive dancer...

Man, I can’t believe all the people complaining about Persona making it to PSP! >-< Persona has always been on the playstation brand, not to mention we’re talking about a remake of a playstation game. If you ask me it was about time PSP got some SMT love (it already has apt Atlus support).
Remakes on the PS2 at this point are largely viewed as a waste to many developers with the presence of the PS3 and I’m certain that Atlus would rather make P5 than remake P1 on PS3. So in reality the PSP is the best way to go at this point seeing as the game doesn’t require a very great deal of redevelopment when being developed on the playstation handheld.

It was. I can't claim to recall every track (been a while since I last played it), but I've always thought P1 had the best OST in the Persona series. I'm not particularly against the music being rearranged, but I'd rather it not be loaded with vocal tracks, like in P3 and P4.

I just took a look at all the videos on gameplay and characters for p1. Funny how after playing the original for so many times that I knew exactly what was going on during every scene. Despite the updated music, cut scenes, and gameplay it is still looks like the same old Persona to me which of course is a good thing.
While I have no problem with it being on PSP, it would sort of be nice/smart if Atlus eventually ported it to the PS2. It's not like they would have to do a heck of a lot of additional work to convert it and it has proven to be profitable for companies like Rockstar who did that with several of their PSP games.

I never get the system fanboys, sheesh.
I'm not PSP's biggest fan, in fact, I still don't have one because I mostly don't care about playing PS2 ports or games they could have just made on PS2 or PS3. But you can't deny that if you're an RPG gamer right now, you're eventually going to want a DS and a PSP, because RPGs are still few and far between on the newer consoles.
Persona was just the thing to push me to finally really want a PSP, there had been plenty of PSP RPGs before Persona that I wanted, but not enough original titles otherwise. I guess I'll just stick to its RPGs.
Though I must chuckle when someone says such-and-such is a Playstation brand. Nothing like that matters these days, they said that about Final Fantasy and then were shocked when SE got cozy with Nintendo again and starting publishing and creating games for Xbox 360. Persona is a spin-off of the SMT franchise that's appeared on Sony's consoles, yes, but the rest of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise has been known to move around. There were Saturn and Nintendo games before, a DS game to come, the Devil Children/DemiKids thing and then its streak on PS2 which looks to be coming to a close this year.
Atlus certainly squeezed everything out of SMT they possibly could have for PS2, I'll give them that. Appreciate it, too. o.o/

So does that mean changing a character's position on the field no longer forces them to defend? Thank goodness for that. I can recall many times in the original where a fight would have been so much easier if I had been able to change the formation without wasting a turn.

Much better localization and no time constraints which was the real reason we got screwed us out of the snow queen quest in the first place.
I'm also wondering if they will take out that annoying habit in the game to keep your team members stuck in reverse order if they are ever a victim of a surprise attack from behind. Every time that happened you were forced to go into the formation section in order to undo it.
Kakizaki
04-01-2009, 03:27 PM
^How was that such a chore? You could save formations. During battle you could just select one and switch. Sure it used up a turn, but big deal. That was just one of the factors of the game.

I will be playing the original U.S. version of the game in anticipation for this one and I've never played it before. Strangely, my Persona experiences have begun in almost backwards order; Actually, not really, just shuffled (3, fes, 4, IS, EP, revelations) Anybody with me?

Ah, the reason why I'm forcing myself to play it is because I'd like to know what's going on when I import this new Japanese version. But actually, I may resort to watching a playthrough instead which can be more insightful sometimes. I would rather not have my jiten handy and try to translate everything on the screen which, sadly, I will have to do. I won't wait until the "Fall" to experience this one!

Because Atlus Japan decided to remake P1 on PSP, which is a more viable system to release games on than a platform that died almost ten years ago. If they decide to also remake P2 on PSP, we'll consider that too.

Yes, but a true-blue localization has been long overdue, given that they released the direct sequel without ever releasing the first P2. Personally, I've thought it would make a great bundle, or even preorder, incentive, ever since I learned that there'd be a Persona 3... but that's clearly not going to happen.
However, I do have an import of IS, on display with the rest of my SMT paraphernalia.

I didn't say "chore" but "annoying". But anyway I did fail to clarify my statement a little bit. I already knew about saving your formations (which I have done several times) and I think it is fair enough to have loose a turn if you want to readjust your party during battles. But should you decide not to do that, why should your team stay in that same reversed order after the battle? That thing sort of annoyed me as sometimes I would forget and then have to face the very next demon is the same messed up order. Again it wasn't a big deal but slightly annoying and since the last poster was listing things they could improve, I thought that might be another suggestion.
And i would like to see and orginal cut of persona 2 as i had heard the american addition we got was edited, i think.. Anyone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong but yea..would be awesome to get the first 2 on the psp and the soul hacker series as well.
I never heard of that before but you are probably referring to Ulala dropping the F-bomb during her after battle statement. They only slightly bleeped it out to where you can still obviously make out what she said. I think that is the only edit in the game so I wouldn't loose too much sleep over it.

"The guy mentions voice acting, I think he might be talking about the battle grunts and stuff, but I'm not 100% sure."
Have you noticed you carry more than one "you" in yourself? Perhaps the merciful you? The graceful angel you? ...Or the cruel, demonic you. We live behind many masks, and you may at this moment be living behind a mask... But you claimed your name, proving you know who you really are. I admire your strong will, and bestow my power unto you... Persona! The power to call on others within you! Sometimes merciful, sometimes cruel... These selves are embedded deep within your soul."
That part HAS to be voice acted. It's from the English PS1 release, after all. ;)

Since Okada-sama leaved Atlus serial begun go down. Revelations, IS and EP are great games. 3d is datesim, with one&only battle location. Graphic style of 4th is horrible...

Sadly, I ended up canceling my order via Amazon. Mainly, because I just realized I'd be buying a PSP for one game.
