Characters Looking Cool

While they don't have quite the same pizazz as the normal SMT characters, I'm digging these new guys. ^_^ Just by looks alone, I think Nikaido might be my favorite, though Keisuke is up there.

I think Gin has the coolest design, boys wise. But I think so far Yuzu takes the price for the girls. Or possibly the singer-character.

I just meant that Keisuke and Kaido are pretty close to being the Law Hero and Chaos Hero of this game. In fact, when I learned about their role in the plot, that's the first thing I thought of: "Oh, they're the Law and Chaos heroes."

Jin... er, I mean, Gin... looks pretty chill. Nikaido has that sort of rough-edged, gotta-compensate-for-something look that every Chaos Hero needs. :)

I really like Amane's look which is very simple, not too many colors, and whatever's on her head doesn't make her look too crazy. Her expressions are sort of neutral.

Generally, the artistic style is nice because the characters have a seriousness to them that fools me they're in a DS game.

Don't know if anyone knows this or if it is public knowledge (haven't seen anying), but the art reminds me of the drawing designs in Yozakura Quartet, (manga by Suzuhito Yasuda).

I think Yuzu has got my vote... outside of persona 3 and 4 there hasn't been much visual fanservice to be found in SMT titles; Kaneko's designs are brilliant but his females generally seem to be rather modestly proportioned for some reason. Why Digital Devil Saga was labeled with 'Sexual Themes' as a warning I will never understand (Argilla's fang-boobs??) In addition to that, she just looks like she's got the kind of personality that could add a good deal of color and vibrancy to what might otherwise potentially be an overly grim tale (overly grim for consumers who didn't spend 100+ hours worshiping Nocturne at least:D). Let's just hope they don't over-use her charms; this is an SMT title after all, so even when we're smiling we don't want to be feeling light-hearted...

I like them all. While I really enjoy the usual looks of SMT characters, these designs are a refreshing change of pace for the series (Wow, I just can't believe I just said that about typically manga-esque character designs...:tongue:).

The more time I spend with this game, the less I like the character designs... even as I like the game itself more and more. Yuzu's starting to really bother me, what with the way her breasts change size depending on pose... and I really don't like that "arms crossed with tiny hands, sinking into cleavage" pose.

My roommate pointed out that Atsurou looks like a squirrel... and he's right.

Right now, the character designs I like most are Gin and Haru (what with her constant flashing of the audience). The others... well... I'll live with them.

Izuna, Gin and Haru are about where my like of the character design begins and ends. While the game actually does an extremely good job of portraying classic SMT themes (Chaos and Law Heroes, for example), the design of the kids annoys me somewhat. The girls don't have breasts, they have funbags.

I guess I mainly don't like the art style because its a common symptom of being a DS game. Developers feel like they have to make it anime-style to sell it, even in franchises where the style doesn't fit, like Might and Magic or Castlevania. I think it would have been great to have Kaneko do the art for the game, or the folks that draw persona if they must have an anime look. Heck, some games meet the anime style halfway, such as Fire Emblem or Hotel Dusk.

I am curious, however, if Kaneko did draw up some new demons for this game or if much of this is older beastiary stuff from past SMTs. I love some of the demon art, I think Lailah is my favorite so far.

The main character was the least cool looking in the whole game. His outfit was just horrible. His facial features were amusing, though.

Well, i thought Jezebel was an interesting character, even thought you have to kill him, and he is evil. I thought the idea of DEMON FLOWER FIRE-BREATHING MONSTER was kinda uncommon, I mean, a fire breathing flower/tree...

And other than jezebel, i liked the design of the guy that in the purple suit and the lean greenish hair. The guy who ask the hero which path he will take and the same guy who pops up in places. I like his hair style.

And another would be...those SDF commander's ugly faces, they always have that akward look... dunno.

And finally, i like the MC, he looks casual, stern at times, and cool when he is serious, Nice art work. Thumbs up for the artist :devil:

Now that I'm actually playing the game, I don't like Amane nearly as much as I used to. "Blah blah God blah blah God" Haru seems much cooler, but Midori is definitely the cutest. Yuzu would be cool if she wasn't playing the frightened girl so much in the first few days.

For females, I'm extremely fond of Haru's design. She somehow makes her wardrobe malfunction WORK, and I love her facial expressions.

For males, I LOVE the MC, who is reminicient of Arisato from Persona 3. I love him even more because of the fact that he has ACTUAL FACIAL EXPRESSIONS.

As for the whole artstyle, I don't think it's out of place at all. Persona 3 and Persona 4 are easily the most anime-esque games I've ever played, and utilize a TON of the tropes present in the medium. I don't see why it's such a sin for Devil Survivor to do the same. I love how clean the art itself is, too.

As a side-note, the comparisons between the protagonist of DS and P3 (and Yuzu to Yukari) popped up in my mind when I finally made it to the Seventh Day: Rather than get roughly four choices, like everyone else seemed to, I got two: Be the Messiah or put my head in the sand. Just like P3. I found that very amusing. :P

Atsuro rocks; MC does too; most other characters (Midori, Keisuke, Kaido, Honda, et al.) are intriguing enough.

Not diggin' Yuzu, Haru, or the head of the Shomonkai...don't know enough yet about Naoya or the SDF lady that showed up near the Akasaka Tunnel (almost called that Asakusa Tunnel by habit - next I'll be calling something Yoyogi Park -_-; aiya).

OH YEAH!! Forget SUPERMUSCLES. Us typers have MEGAMUSCLES!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, I didn't get that either. But I liked Amane. I can't say that I really liked Shoji. Yeah, I liked the design, but as a character? Not so much. She just kinda seemed a little slapped on. Like they kinda sued her in after everything else. But yeah, I liked all the other characters. Gin was amazing. I liked Gin's design a lot, and he was a freaking awesome character. Haru looks great, too. I knew I liked her since I first saw her.
