View Full Version : Ask a Question, Get an Answer (Maybe)
Your chance to ask us all sorts of questions that we'll either vaguely answer, dodge, or complete ignore.
Just kidding.
Still, if you've got a burning request, a question that's been bugging you for ages, then please feel free to post it here and we'll do our best to answer it in an upcoming Atlus newsletter.
There ARE some questions that we may not be able to answer, for one reason or another, and we'll either give the reason, or try to at least acknowledge that we'll be upping our evasion skill by dodging it. The last thread in the old forums seemed to fade out after the first week of suggestions, so please try to resubmit your questions or come up with new ones if it so happened that previous questions weren't answered in the most recent issue. We miss things sometimes, and it could have been one we wanted to answer!
By the way, have a happy, safe, and enjoyable holiday season!

This may or may not be answerable, considering the last SBK was supposedly co-developed by Racjin and Atlus Japan, I may have received misinformation on this.

Will we ever get to see the PS2 Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation series of games translated to english?

Persona 4 is apparently coming to PS2, however what system will the next main series Shin Megami Tensei game go to?

I can answer this for you now. Atlus has nothing to do with the TO series and hasn't for quite a few years. Square Enix owns the rights to the series. If you have any questions regarding Tactics' future, ask them.

For instructions and manuals, we tend to handle those on a case-by-case basis. Send service at atlus.com an email and we'll dig around the warehouse to see if there are any for the particular game you're looking for, but we generally don't have sufficient quantities to put them on the store.

Since OGs is just a rehash OG1 and OG2, maybe Atlus could just release OG Gaiden, seeing how it's different from OGs/OG1/OG2.

Can you give an example of how shedding light on a question might throw a wrench in your plans?
Also if I may, what outlook does Atlus have on 2D fighters and why we don't see to many published, for example games like melty blood deserve a domestic localized release, care to share some light on this? I'm aware it can deal with SCEA or the japanese developers but I'd like to know where Atlus stands on 2D fighters and how you choose which you'd like to localized.

Most of the questions we get asked are "are you going to localize X?" We can't give out any information on a game we're doing it's been officially announced. Most of the time, we wait until a game is near release before we even admit that we've been working on it. So, while we may have been busily working on a game for several months, the admins here can't tell you that we're doing it until our PR announces it to the news sites. Then, the announcement itself tells you that we're localizing it, so there's no point in answering those questions ourselves.
On the reverse side, we're not allowed to say "no" unless a game gets released by some other company, just on the off chance that we change our minds and decide to pick up a game.
Not having played Melty Blood, I don't really have any personal opinion about it. However, I do recognize that the niche for fighting games is somewhat smaller than the niche for JRPGs, at least, in the circles we usually travel.

I think the idea is that, no matter how unlikely a localization may be, they can't actually deny any plans for it. So even if there's no chance in hell they'd ever localize a given game, they'll never publicly say as much.

I've worked security at offices before. I'd work the midnight shift and duck into the security camera blind spots and play my DS. I'd chew on the receptionist's complimentary mints and look at all the cubicles; balloons with the little palm trees celebrating "Hawaii Day" and unfunny sunday morning cartoon strips of Dilbert and Cathy pasted all over the place.

It depends on the game and the kind of work you did on it. QA tends to be the worst. Once you've played a game inside and out for over a month, playing it again doesn't have much personal value.
With editing, sometimes it is fun to actually play the game and see your words onscreen, along with voice and animation and all that other stuff.
What's some of your favorite games that you have brought to us? Also, has there been a game that was pure hell to translate?
(Edit: Also, Onion, Your 1 post away from Pi)
This is more of a personal question than something I'd like to see answered in a newsletter, but:

I don't think that's something they should/would be answering since stuff of that nature is a no-no on official forums. Well, using them and/or providing links, anyway.
Do teams play other games during breaks and stuff? I recall reading in a Dokapon Kingdom preview that you guys had a blast playing it (or was it the testers? Can't recall or be bothered to check :P), and it made me wonder if you guys played other multiplayer games together--like Brawl, for example.
Do you guys have every system in there that maybe employees bring from their home for everyone to use? Or are they "company consoles" to test projects on?
What do you guys eat? :3

I am very much in agreement with this. I QA'd a game and after awhile, just hearing the "town" music track would make me cringe. The trick is to find a victi- er... someone else to play the game. Then it kind of brings new life to the game.

I have 2 questions, first more important then second.
1.What reasons were there for the changes in Persona 1 for the PS1? More then just just a charcter was changed, an entire ending was removed. I've puzzled over it for years and could only figure it had something to do with faulty coding in the original as it tended to crash the game or timing issues with the game's release.
2.Out of all the Megaten released so far, were there any released for the PS1/PS2/GBA Atlus USA regreted not releasing? Any favorites you (the staff of Atlus USA) would recomend from the series that hasnt seen a N/A release?

I own a PS3 with BC, recently beat Persona 4 after beating Persona 3. Just today I read about a Microsoft-Atlus partnership. Does that mean no PS3 games from Atlus? Because I was looking forward to Persona 5(We all know it's coming). And I'm not planning on buying a cheap made hardware again that keeps giving me RROD. Living outside the US + owning a 360=waste of money.

I'm pretty sure that just meant Atlus had become an official publisher of 360 games, not that there was any sort of exclusivity agreement between Microsoft and Atlus.
Onion of Mystery
12-28-2008, 12:22 AM
Exactly. That is not an exclusivity contract, it just means that Atlus, U.S.A. has met the requirements to be a licensed publisher of Xbox 360 games, and it does not rule out the possibility of ever seeing a PS3 title from us.

It's kind of... odd.. The title is ??? and I dunno what to do... I'm kind of afraid it might be an infected email like a hoax with a virus. But it does have atlus games address and looks a lot like one of their news letters... Should I be worried? I believe it is an announcement of Devil Summoner: Raidou vs King Abaddon. Virtual Console: It's not up to us to decide what gets put on the VC. Bug NOA if you'd really like to see our games on it. Also, localizing old Atlus games for release on VC wouldn't make us any money, so there's almost no chance of it happening.

Basicly Atlus has no plans to release anything as D/L content on any system at this time due to the lack of profit as they see it currently. As the games are currently available, even if at a higher price, there is little reason for them to do such. Could they simply reprint them under the GQD contract for the PS2? Sure, they could. They are PS1 titles but they could do the same thing Konami did with Metal Gear Solid. Will they? Not a chance in hell. Sorry man, your kicking a dead horse that's been abused enough.

Not that I cared much about the spoiler, but who gets to decide when a game is ok to spoil? Does it matter if the game is 1 year old, 5 years old, or even 10? Ya, freaking out is just funny but if you know it can spoil the ending of a game, why rub it in the faces of people who HAVE NOT beaten it yet? Because you have? Good for you, you get a cookie! It's rather rude all the same though and it shows just as much of a lack in maturity as spazzing out because someone droped a bit of info that could posibly reveal too much info about a game's story. Do what ever though, atleast I'll get a good laugh either way.

The age of a game is irrelevant, spoilers should be marked as such. For instance, I recently hunted down a copy of Persona 2. However, I want to finish P4 before I start it. I also don't have a lot of time for gaming, so that won't be started by the end of the week. Nonetheless, P2 is an old game; does that make it fair to spoil it? No, and I'm sure that I'm not the only one who does occasionally hunt down an old gem to play.
Also on the old aspect, what about Ys? How many years ago did that first come out? As someone who never had a TG-16, I'm looking forward to the DS version. But that doesn't mean anyone who's not played the older version should be spoiled...

There used to be an unofficial Formal Friday where us t-shirt wearing slobs would come to work in suits and ties. We haven't had one in a while, though.

Actualy I agree with Hamel on this one. It doesn't matter how old the game is, there are still people who might not have played it. (Though the spoilers weren't really game ruining this time around.)
I never played the original Megami Tensei for the NES, but I'm not about to get upset if somebody posts a spoiler for the game.

Q: What happened to the Newsletter?
The latest one is from October and there wasn't something like a "End of the Year Edition". But mainly... Will there any new Newsletter coming in the future? :(
You do realize that the whole point of this thread is to ask questions that will be answered in the newest newsletter, right?
hmm did I forgot the [sarcasm] tags?

Here is a question
can I buy a Raiho with a sad face like you have in your avatar?
No.
Well, you probably could, but it would just be a cheap knock-off.
Where can I buy a Limited Edition specialy cased action figure of Orochimaru from Generation of Chaos? *cousaghrcascoumgh*
I have a few questions, if someone will answer them, I would appreciate it.
1. I've heard various rumors that Persona 1 (Megami Ibunroku Persona) would be re-released on the PSP, but as I said, its a rumor, is there any known truth to that rumor?
2. Why were the Atlus games so rare from 1995 to 2005 in the US?
Was it due to a lack of major interest on the US's side? Or did I just never see them anywhere?
3. Why was Persona 2: Innocent Sin never released in the US?
I've heard its because of a certain story centric character, but I've also heard it was due to a certain bad guy in it, and what he had as an army and his weapon.
Thanks either way :)

The GameFAQs page has both Japanese titles and U.S. titles, and also has distributed titles as published titles along with a few inconsistencies. And if I remember correctly, most other sources don't include developed games by Atlus or some of the older/obscure titles such as Somer Assault. I'm just asking for an officially updated listing, as I can't find anything that's completely 100% accurate for what I'm looking to collect.

That kind of helps...Wikipedia is what I had been using until I realized a few games were missing. Now that I see that it is updated (with stuff like Somer Assault), I'll have to go through and check it all again. That's why I was hoping to have an official one to use, as Wikipedia does not know all, much to my disappointment.

I did some research and apparently it was mentioned here a few times before(didn't get any specifics), but I wanted to know what you guys thought of it, and if it would be alright for me to use it if I can prove that I own a copy of the game.

Good. I was afraid that might have been too subtle. Just remember talking about the game itself is fine. Avoid specific talk about / relating to emulation.
That was quite subtle, but yeah, I THINK I got it, but I am not 100% sure, but I'll not bring up the emulation or whatever about it.
I know its a pain when people don't follow rules, I've experienced my fair share.

Are the Production Diaries on hiatus? If so, is it because you guys ran out of ideas to explore?
Maybe you can spice things up and just talk about your titles. The first PD was about Operation Darkness from what I recall, and I'd really like to hear more on your guys' work on the games.
Oooooh! Maybe we--the fans--could send you some interview questions for you to answer and share as a PD (or a new thing altogether!) :D Maybe video of an official Atlus Staff roundtable discussion! =O Or just audio.

I wouldn't say they're on hiatus. "Irregular" might be a better word. As you've undoubtedly been able to tell by the onslaught of game announcements, we've been busy.
Our first priority is always going to be localization. If the production diaries have to slip a little, well, it's a sacrifice that must be made at times. But thanks for the ideas.

Welllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll...
Most mails get to our PR department. I don't know what goes on there. Perhaps addressing it to someone a little more specific, like "Someone who worked on Metal Saga" or "Whoever wrote Spacy Girl's dialogue" would get past that first line.
Still, letters like "Are you going to localize Growlanser 6?" won't get answered, just like we avoid answering them here. Also things like "I need high-res images of Mitsuru in a bikini, suitable for making a life-size poster, oh and I need to know how tall she is" will get laughed at but not responded to unless we're sitting around with nothing to do (which is never).

I just got Disgaea 1.
I deem it thus:
-fun overall
-very addicting
-many of the opponents fought can be totally insane
-Prinnies for the win dood!
-The last secret boss is one totally crazy piece of work
-the cap in terms of maxing out stats- over 18,000 levels :D
-I might even put more hours into this than P3-4 combined.
I'm looking to get one more game this month.
Preferably should have:
-RPG elements
-high replay value
-non-preset item system
(a near-infinite selection like in Diablo2 or Shining Soul)
-high degree of customization
Any recommendations?

What if I marked it for Onion of Mystery? Would they know who to give it to or would they cast confused glances at each other?
Would it be a threatening letter if I said I wanted to grill you and put you on my hamburger? Like, what if I made a story (thriller/suspense) out of your name, and its ending was actually a delicious onion recipe, cleverly hidden inside many innuendos/double entendres!?
"I'm gonna slap you with 3/4 of a cup of pure awesomesauce."
Anyway, my real question:
Why don't you put more of your DS games on the Nintendo Channel as demos? I recall being very happy that an Atlus game was actually up there once (TC2). Though, I can understand why not, too--double-edged sword and all that, right?

I enjoyed the Breaking the Code Developer Diary. It is always fun to see someone finding the boundary conditions in a system and viciously pounding on them. (Well, it is less fun when you are responsible for actually fixing it.)
I'd be interested in seeing what your software devs do. Do they work with standard modern tools, or Rube Goldberg command-line contraptions? Does hilarity ensue when they have to edit the source code ("D---it! All the comments are in Japanese!")
