I've always found music in gaming to be of incredible quality, and the stuff I've heard from Atlus games are easily high in my list. Although I kind of wonder what the lyrics are more often than not, even if they were sung in English xD
But my question to the staff, has there been a particular game soundtrack in the vast library of games you've liked the most?

I am not going to go into detail with you about how such expectations are calculated at Atlus.
Does it involve cutting the head off of a chicken and letting him run around on a round lit-up game show style board?
That equates to the OG games, which number: two GBA games, one DS game (with another in development), and one PS2 game. That's three handhelds and a last-generation console that stores don't want to stock games for.
There are two “last generation” (read: best generation) console games. Why wouldn't selling them through online vendors be a viable option?
Get games you think are good now and enjoy them.
I did. I got OGs and OGG. But I couldn't enjoy them as much as I would've liked to due to their being in Japanese, not working with American PS2s without the use of a modchip or some swap magic-esque disc, and an inability to get both swap magic and the game to work while booting up Codebreaker in between. Hoops. It's not fun to jump through them. The entire point of my advocating a localization of both OGs and OGG is so I can get the games I think are good now and enjoy them.
3, 4, 5
No, yes and yes.
Fixed with the power of logic and hope.
Did you support Atlus USA before the SRT titles were released in North America? Have you purchased or are you interested in any other Atlus USA [games] besides the SRT titles?
Yes and no. I remember the days when Atlus used to release games like Robopon. Robot Pokemon. I bought all three, the first and the two sequels. Old Atlus was awesome, if only because they hadn't yet refused to publish two of the greatest non-licensing-nightmare "Robot Collecting" games ever. WHAT HAPPENED, ATLUS?!
Do you even realize the level of cognitive dissonance you have to have to make these two statements?
I don't.
One the one hand, you're saying that Super Robot fans are so fickle that they are unwilling to pay for games that they can pirate. But yet, we're now the bad guy, because these same rabid fans who have theoretically stolen 3 games from us at this point should be catered to?
Yes. Using the actions of the minority of fans as well as non fans as grounds to not cater to the majority of fans who did buy the game and will buy future SRT games does make you the bad guy.
I don't understand how you're getting the idea that Atlus U.S.A., the company the published 3 games in the series, and the only company in the United States that has published ANY of them, is somehow "throwing the series under the bus".
Publishing this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYsz3ytMQ3Y) and not this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSA3AvgVicE). And especially not a game featuring OG's answer to Domon Kasshu, pumped up to the level of Master Asia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmFEXNpmCLA). That's probably how. You're not completely throwing it under the bus, just the best part of it. And that's terrible.
Shouldn't you be mad at every other company here who didn't try publishing these games here?
I'm not humanly capable of possessing that much rage. Otherwise I would be.
Our management took 3 chances on putting something out their that the fans would love. The people who worked on these games busted their asses on these games, and put their heart and soul into them. Everyone who worked on them is simultaneously very happy that the fanbase loves the work they did so much, and very disappointed that more people didn't see the love they put into their work. (or were unwilling to pay to see said love.)
Nobody's saying that the earlier three games weren't good. Just that it'd be nice if you continued the good work. If I didn't love the work you guys did, I wouldn't be pestering you guys to do more of it. If anything, it's a compliment to the fact that you guys did an awesome job. But then you stopped short of perfection by leaving out a large chunk of the OGverse storyline. And that's disappointing to fans.
I don't know why you're getting frustrated with us, like you think we're some doorman preventing you from getting inside the happening club when we already let you inside 3 times.
Well, you let me inside 3 different clubs that are all awesome. However, you're the doorman preventing me from getting inside two of the most happening clubs where JAM Project belches out lyrical genius while manly martial artists and samurai pilots yell their catch phrases to the heavens. You do it because it's not profitable. Now if a doorman said that directly to someone, of course they'd be frustrated. Not as frustrated as if the doorman beat around the bush, but still pretty frustrated.
If another SRT title comes along that doesn't have licensing nightmares and doesn't have the specific retail viability problems that the games you are suggesting have, bring it to our attention, and we will look into publishing it. We love working on games fans love. we love pleasing our fans, but if we did every game that our fans wanted, we simply wouldn't be around to please them anymore.
Seriously? It's obvious that there's a good chance Atlus will bring over EXCEED. There's hardly a need for persistent pestering since it is that "another SRT title" you're mentioning. And of course I'll buy it. However, there will still be two OG games left unlocalized. I'm not asking you to publish every game that your fans want or even a portion of them. I'm asking you to publish two games that bridge the gap between the games you've published and the ones in the series that you'll (hopefully) publish in the future. Sure you can simplify it by dismissing the games as wishful thinking by fans, but they play an actual relevant role in completing the storyline. Ignoring all the financial mumbo jumbo and estimates devised using what could be black magic for all I know, it's a valid reason to publish them and it's not just "because the fans want you to." Otherwise you’re breaking a moral contract you have with fans by delivering an incomplete series of OG games.
Question: Does Atlus believe that Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier EXCEED has exceeded the original EF in every way? Enough so to warrant localizing it?

Look, Elysion Zero, to make a long story short.
THEY WON'T TRANSLATE THINGS THAT WOULD MAKE THEM LOSE MONEY
If you really want it YOU get Atlus all the money they will need in order to license, translate, and publish the games and I am sure they would do it.
Otherwise, a company won't throw away their money just because some fans cried MOAR.

Do you know much would it cost to localize OGs and OGG? I'll likely not be able to come up with anywhere near the amount, but surely your bold statement would be a bit more effective with that crushing monetary figure. In fact...

Elysion Zero: I admire your passion for the SRT series, but understand that your HOTBLOODED SPIRIT isn't going to make us change our policies, those being that we Atlus employees are here as moderators and as fans, not here to throw open our financial records and corporate inner workings to the general public.
You are not going to get an answer as to why or why not we choose to publish a particular game here. We've said as much about many games in the past, and we'll continue to do so in the future. Repeatedly asking, then hectoring, then outright insulting us is not going to change that. All that serves is to annoy us and make us even less likely to want to answer further questions.
I'm going to keep this thread open, because it's fun to answer harmless questions about life at Atlus and teasingly ignore others. Any more discussion of SRT OGs and OGG should be taken to the Game Suggestion forum; further postings here are subject to the whims of our increasingly-aggravated mod staff. You might think it's unfair that we're not giving you a straight answer, and to that, all I have to say is "Yes, it is unfair."
I'd much rather discuss Mellusia's question about fanservice, anyway.

We used to, actually. I remember that when I first started at Atlus, there was this morning where I made coffee, but I didn't set the pot all the way in, so the coffee filter didn't drain. As a result, all the coffee grinds spilled out and got all jammed up in everything. So I had to spend a good part of the morning cleaning it out. :frown:
It was kind of embarrasing since it was my 1st or 2nd week here. People would come into the kitchen and look at me, and I'd be like 'Nothing to see here!'

Regardless of any past history, I think it's a fair yes/no question. Let's not turn this into another argument. Disagreement in opinion doesn't mean "you don't get to ask questions."
Besides, I'm curious too. It won't affect my purchasing decision, but I still wouldn't mind knowing the answer to that question.
I wonder if Atlus USA themselves know the answer though. I mean, the game is still 5 months away from US release. Still plenty of time for them to make up their mind on that.
-----EDIT-----
Actually, I have a question of my own.
Does Atlus USA start working on localization AFTER the US release is announced? Or do you sometimes start the localization process BEFORE the rest of us even know it's coming?
I guess my real reason for asking is if I can secretly wish that you guys are working on EOIII localization without telling us. :D

If we were planning DLC, here's a few things you should consider:
1. We certainly wouldn't announce it via our forums via a moderator's post, it would come from our PR department.
2. In my experience, a DLC announcement can come anywhere from two months or so before the game's launch to six or so months after you've owned it. Anyone hoping to get clarification on DLC this far away from its release, well, we're going to have to ask you to be patient.

Editor Mike Meeker looked less crazed than usual just now, so I floated the question past him while he was reloading his Nerf gun from having shot up the QA testers.
"I'm a fan of the Real Robots that actually look like things people would sit inside and pilot. None of this 'pirouetting super-agile giant robots with hair and faces powered by LOVE AND SPIRIT' stuff. So... Alteisen and the Gespensts. As to characters... I like Ryusei for his constant obliviousness, plus he got 'sweetdiculous' into the games. Excellen had great one-liners, Tetsuya was often the lone voice of reason amid all the crazy stuff going on, Arado had a gullible wanna-be gallootish innocence that made him fun to write, and Ibis was hot as all hell. Kai is the most badass character in all the games, moreso because he didn't need to be psychic or drive a magic dragon-god mind-reading machine to kick someone's ass seven ways from Sunday--just the Dan McNinja mustache of power and his own quiet determination."

Ooh I have a question! Do you have any fun "rites of initiation" or reoccurring pranks that you play on new employees or interns at the office?
They already have to play through a horribly buggy version of Choro-Q for half an hour during the interview process. Piling more abuse on top of that just seems unnecessarily cruel.
This, this is not torture to the Choro-Q fan. Viva la Choro-Q!

@Mellusia: Let's just say none of our significant others are going to become "Atlus Spouse." We put in the OT when it counts, but our working conditions are quite amicable.
The ideal situation is always to jump onto a new project as one ends, but yes, sometimes there is downtime. Usually that's when you'll see considerably more moderator posts. ;)
@Sdragon: As a raging CV nerd... I still need to pick that up.
@MovSoldier_12: Dokapon Kingdom was developed by Sting, so the fallacy of your first question nullifies the validity of your second. If you enjoyed it, try Dokapon Journey.

I've been wondering about one for some time, I beat P2 Innocent Sin, and some of the enemies always said "Sieg Reich" for hailing Hitler, but one of my friends said that it's written wrongly, but it means something like "Empire's Victory". Is it true?
Question:
Since you are publishing Metal Slug XX, could it mean that there could be more SNKP games coming through this partnership, or is this a "One and Done" kind of thing?

Ok, here's a burning question of destiny:
Is there any hope at all that Atlus would release Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniax Chronicle Edition in America?
I'm saying because, let's face it guys, there will never be another game as good as Nocturne ever again. I've already replayed it to death but I'll take even the most trivial addition as an excuse to buy and play it all over again!
Come on, it would be easy! All you'd have to do is change a few lines (oversimplification)! I would buy this even if you priced it at $200 (not an exaggeration).

Not entirely true, Hamel... The European publishers do license games from us, so we remain in the loop as far as numbers go.
That said, two things prevent us from answering the question, one, being that forum moderators are not privy to those numbers, and two, we make it a point not to discuss numbers if we were.
Generally speaking, though, the European publishers tend to pick up our top tier games, so they do well.

Though sticking with big name VAs is all well and good, I think it'd be more beneficial to bring in new people with talent.
I'm all for the seasoned VA or two, but it kind of unnerves me to hear the same person in every other game in one role or another.
Onion of Mystery

You also don't want to gamble on your actors when you're paying for voice recording. The best method I've found is to use the actors I know are good for the big parts, and bring in ones I'm not as familiar with for smaller ones. That way I get to know them, which ones are good, which can be used for certain roles, etc. Then, the more I'm familiar with an actor and their work, the more favorably I'll consider using that person in beefier roles in the future.

As a fan of Atlus, the Megaten stuff being the only games i've played for the last six months, I was wondering if I should just go ahead and get the ps3, as two games will have been published by Atlus on that system in the last year vs. the zero games on the 360. We can't really take an "official" stance on the matter, being that we love all systems equally as a company who publishes games for all systems.
And uh... We do have three games we've published on the 360 at retail, as well as two (one upcoming, XenoClash: Ultimate Edition) for XBLA. You should buy them! Just don't look at the review scores, whatever you do!

Maybe I'm just weird, but I honestly didn't see a problem with any of the three... although I suppose part of that could be the only one I've played any substantial amount is Zoids Assault... (Hard for me to lie when it's easy enough to look up my gamertag...) But I do own all three of the strategy trio for the 360... and I'm more than sure I won't really have an issue with any of them. ^^;

I'm pretty sure Atlus knows how to handle that... and overall, the games they chose were not bad. I mean, graphically, they're not the best looking games... I understand Operation Darkness has some gameplay bugs, Spectral Force 3 is... well, it's an Idea Factory game... and Zoids Assault is actually disconnected enough it doesn't make sense to a hardcore Zoids fan storywise (I'd be the hardcore Zoids fan, by the way...) I suppose the issue with Zoids Assault was probably that the story was more connected with the Battle Story... which had nothing to do with the more recent revival. (I've played enough Zoids games, I can't remember if Zenebas is mentioned in Assault... I think it was only Guylos and Helic, though...)
Which I guess is actually something to ask... since Atlus did localize Zoids Assault, does that mean someone there is a fan of Zoids? Or was it just coincidence that it was chosen?

Jon_Mclane
02-06-2010, 09:54 AM
Even if you disagree with what I said and think spectral force 3, operation darkness, and zoids assault are good. I think we can all agree they aren't anywhere near Demon's Souls and 3D Dot Game Heroes good. I also heard that Demon's Souls outsold all 3 xbox games combined and PS3 has sold about 3 times more consoles in Japan so I think it's a safe bet that when SMT makes the next gen jump you'll see it on the ps3, maybe they'll be on the 360 also but I could almost guarantee they wont be 360 exclusive, either multiplatform or ps3 exclusive.
elf_boobs
02-06-2010, 02:34 PM
I guess it makes sense that the 360 wouldn't be a likely console for a company like Atlus to make the move to the next gen on. They seem to be first and foremost focused on THEIR audience, and the since the 360 isn't exactly making huge numbers in Japan, I would imagine a Wii or PS3 game would be in order for their next console SMT game, assuming they don't find portable gaming so profitable they just focus more on that for the time being.

Wow. I didn't actually realize that you were under the same company as TakaraTomy. So that must mean that it was pretty easy to get the license for Assault? How expensive is it to produce TV advertisements for games?
Nowadays, TV advertising is really only used for big name games that are going to sell regardless. Why hasn't anyone used TV ads for the more obscure games?
Question 1: Very, very, very expensive.
Question 2: See answer to question 1.
If you guys went on the Oregan Trail (like the old school PC game), which Atlus employees would you take along and why?
None of these guys. We're all very prone to illness. Dysentery would claim us before we were halfway to the promised land.
Any particular Game soundtracks that made you cry?
I wouldn't say a whole lot of songs make me break down and cry. But to give you something, here's a short list of random tracks I find very moving, either due to my personal experiences with the game or because the song carries the emotion of their associated scenes without the scene even being present:
Chrono Trigger - Sealed Door
Soul Blazer - Dream Sequence Theme
Secret of Mana - The Pureland
Final Fantasy VI - Ending
Metal Gear Solid 3 - Debriefing
Final Fantasy XI - Memoro De La Stono (Distant Worlds version)

If I were on the OreGON Trail, the first person I'd have to choose would be Onion. I'd need someone else who knew the lyrics to John Linell's "Oregon".
(Oregon is bad, stop it if you can. Run away, run away. Now it's after you. Flee to some place new.)
Second would be one of the creative designers who doesn't post in the forums. He's handy with firearms and bows, and old enough to remember most of the old-tyme afflictions.
The last member of the party would be our QA Manager. Between us, we'd have a good amount of languages covered, and he's a fellow Laker fan so there would be awesome conversation.

3) Virtual Console: It's not up to us to decide what gets put on the VC. Bug NOA if you'd really like to see our games on it. Also, localizing old Atlus games for release on VC wouldn't make us any money, so there's almost no chance of it happening.
Replace "Virtual Console" with "PSN" and that's basically your answer.

I'm partial to Sriracha on fried fish, popcorn shrimp, and fries. Tabasco is ok for boneless wings but Cholula Chipotle tastes better on it as well as omlets. I'd rather have pepers on my burgers. There's too many holiday brand hot sauces to name but most of them while good tend to sound hotter then they actualy are. Still looking for one that uses ghost pepers or habanero pepers. I've never found a hot sauce that ever burned to me but then I've always loved eating pepers.

Ah, I understand. Thanks for your time. To be perfectly honest I ask these questions because I'm scared Europe is not getting Trauma Team, my most anticipated Atlus game of the moment.

Star Control 2. When most gamers talk "classic" era, they're only referring to NES/SNES, which I think is a ton of BS, especially since the majority of the groundbreaking inventions were done on the PC side of the game industry at the time. if u guys could quit yah job at atlus and go work for another game company. who will you guys work for
If you guys could quit your jobs at Atlus, and go work for another game company, who would you guys work for?
First, we've made this sentence structurally correct. We've bothered to type out the word "you", and instead of using "yah," we've expanded the word to the grammatically appropriate "your", replacing the "a" with "ou" and capping it off with an "r" to make the word possessive.
We've also gone to such lengths as to capitalize Atlus, being that companies are considered proper nouns.
Finally, we've replaced an ill-timed period with a comma, and added a little piece of punctuation called a question mark, intended to imply that the writer is asking a question. Question marks are especially important in threads about questions, although one could certainly argue that in this thread, questions are simply implied. Take that up with your philosophy professors.
Now let's get advanced.
The use of "guys" implies that there is more than one "guy" here at Atlus, and therefore there is more than one "job," necessitating the addition of an "s" to the word "job".
Finally, we changed the word "will" to "would". This is an advanced tactic that may take you some years before mastering, but one definition of "will" is "expected or required to." In what we call a hypothetical question, the word "will" has no place, it implies in this case that the Atlus employee will most definitely be hired at the dream company of his choice, which as Olethros has so kindly pointed out, is unlikely.

And this time next year, Inzaghi will be saying, "did I somehow imply that we'll pull out all the stops for a good AFD joke this year? and when did I say that? right, last year's AFD. mwahaha."
