I was ridiculously addicted to the gameboy version when I was a kid. I never really beat it, or was really good at it. The upgrade/collect system was what sold it for me at the time.

Manly Biceps, the JASDAQ code for Index Holdings is 4835.
I'm confused, I thought Takara Tomy sold Atlus to Index Holdings, which currently makes Atlus a sister company to Madhouse, an anime studio Index Holdings currently own.
However, had Atlus been kept by Takara Tomy, I would have found it awesome to see Tatsunoko Productions as one of your sister companies.

This may have been covered else where- but how long does the translation of a game actually take? I know there are many variables such as platform, team size and resources- but for example… to actually localize DQIX what’s the hours involved here? Is it simply marketing mumbo jumbo that games take a year or so to get localized?

This is for NISA, but it still more or less applies that it depends on the amount of text in the game and the number of people you can have working on it at one time.

Ah, don't mind me too much... I'm new here. But, I kind of wanted to ask this if that's okay. I've been wondering about the new Goketsuji Ichizoku (Power Instinct) game, Goketsuji Ichizoku Matsuri Senzo Kuyou... I dunno if there's much love (or people who care) for the series since it's not all that incredible, but I'm kind of hoping it gets a release. As far as I know, though, I'm barking up the wrong tree.
Are there any sort of plans or chances that it may get a US release at some point? If not the arcade version, I wouldn't mind it if just the console version got released, if it gets a port. If it's something that can't be answered at current, like, not at liberty to or it hasn't been released yet over there or whatnot, it's alright.
I apologize if I've bothered anyone by just asking this or the way I worded it (or if I've misunderstood anything). Thanks if this question is answered.

I feel that the Wii is only more fitted for casual games. There are a lot of shovelware games on it unfortunately. The few good gameS ARE fun, but since there are so many party games \ shovelware games, I think it would be a smarter idea to cater to a more " hardcore" gaming audience. PS 2, 3, the *AHEM* box...
It's not even about the future. The PS 2's death kiss from Atlus was Persona 4 and it was an elegant goodbye indeed. I'm very certain they can pull something amazing off.
You know what would be epic?
A non-grinding massively multiplayer online actual game. You'd log in, battle alone to raise your character, with the chance of joining others for boss fights or "Quests" That involve going through dungeon Y to get item Y to person Z for HOLY ---- exp and items.
That would be sexy.

That's called "localization," which it just so happens is what we excel in. Most of us are highly fluent in the vagaries of the internet, so it's pretty easy to emulate the particular pattern of poor spelling and emoticons known as L33t.

How does Atlus determine what games to spoil, and with what spoils?
We write all the names of games we're currently doing on Stratego pieces and play the game normally, except that instead of capturing the opponent's flag, the ENTIRE opposing army has to be eliminated. When that finally happens, the eliminated player assumes control of half the winning player's pieces and a civil war begins, red on red, blue on blue, sheer chaos, until ONE piece is left standing. THAT is the game we spoil.
It's usually the game written on the one, but sometimes the spy gets him, and then it's anyone's guess.
...The game first needs to have something that would not only be worth spoiling in terms of financial sense to us and to the consumer, but is too awesome to pass up on. For instance, it was probably unexpected for us to provide a soundtrack with The Dark Spire, but the artistic direction that game took with its soundtrack and its classic remixes made the opportunity to good to not pursue. Of course, it also depends on the developer's willingness to provide/create/approve those assets for the North American release.

1) Atlus didn't make the game. It was developed by Monolith.
2) Does it have licensed characters? Then it's not bloody likely.
3) You didn't ask, but it should be mentioned - we're not going to announce any new games here before giving the information out to the general public. If you really want to stay on top of our releases, sign up for the newsletter.

I think I've explained this before, but while cheese is actually on the lower end of lactose content, (due to the aging process, in fact!) it's generally high in fat and calorically heavy. Best to avoid cheese altogether, unless it's in moderation, (like on something like Tacos), or its pepperjack, because that's some tasty cheese.

Fat gets a bad rap because of a very faulty study by Ancel Keys over three decades ago that the media and government latched onto. Carbs are your real enemy. Although getting your delicious, healthy animal fats from meat is better than dairy, for various reasons.
So to stay on topic with a question: Who can't wait for Persona 3 Portable to be released in the US? =P

Also, calories are the real enemies. Just don't eat so much. You'll live longer. It'll be awesome.

Is adding subtitles when there weren't any in the Japanese game beyond the scope of localization? Unless I'm just not seeing the option, there are no subtitles for Persona, which is incredibly frustrating on two levels. One, it's a game on a portable system and, when using the PSP as such, it's not always feasible to have the volume up or use headphones. Two, people with impaired hearing miss some important bits of story, or have to replay sections because the volume wasn't up high enough or something similar.

There actually were subtitles in the Japanese version...Considering the JP release didn't have VA. xp
But I must second this request for subtitles. Why they removed them I'll never know. The game's volume is way too low to hear Philemon.

Onion is being mysteriously silent, so I guess I'll tackle this one.
We rarely ask for subtitles to be removed, and if we do, there was a good reason. It's never an arbitrary decision.
As far as adding them, I wouldn't say it's outside the scope of localization, but factors like our relationship with the developer, the type of code that was used in the game, and the time it would take them to be implemented all come into play. It's never as simple as "hey, add this plz."

When you make a quesadilla with Parmesan cheese, it doesn't even require meat...
A quesadilla with meat? I must be sheltered or something because I've never heard of that.
The only other ingredient I've ever eaten [a] corn tortilla[s] with cheese in it are refried beans, which transforms it into an empanada. It's basically a quesadilla sandwich, almost: open tortilla with cheese and refried beans, topped with another tortilla.

There are very few last night foods that hit the spot quite as well as a Del Taco Breakfast Bacon Quesadilla.
But I'll throw ground sausage, or grilled chicken inside a quesadilla all the time. It gives it that push it needs to go from mostly insubstantial snack to "that'll tide me over for a bit".

Haven't you ever been to Del Taco? No; no, I have not. The only "Mexican" place I go to is Cotijas (and that's rarely), and that's just to get myself their awesome Bean & Cheese burrito and/or nachos. Of course, you're talking to the guy who didn't know there was such a thing as carne asada fries =/

It's funny that you mention it. The only times I'll go to Del Taco are if I'm meeting my friends for RPG Night, if I'm up late because I've been gaming, or if a coworker's making a breakfast run.
It's pretty much only good when you can't be bothered to make anything yourself, but you want the good times to keep rolling.
Dragonlife: I will have to say my greatest quesadilla-based disappointment was going to Del Taco once to get a Jalapeno Bacon Quesadilla. They asked at the window if I wanted jalapenos, which I thought was odd, so I said no.
Later, I realized, to my utter dismay, it was a "Jalapeno Bacon" Quesadilla, meaning that the bacon was jalapeno flavored, but there were no actual jalapenos in my quesadilla. Of all the low, lowhanded tricks.

Exactly!! Back where I spent a lot of my early 20's there was a place (Nick Tahoe's) that offered a menu item called the garbage plate. 90% of the time the thought of it was unappetizing at best, but in certain situations it was an absolutely amazing and almost necessary meal. Hello mighty Atlus staff members. Please humour me with some responses to my questions :3
With Persona 3 being remade/formatted for the PSP with a few new goodies to it and with Persona 1 out for the PSP, have any plans been made to have a PSP version of Persona 2? It would seem like a likely conclusion, but since Atlus skipped from 1 to 3, I'm not sure what to think
And just a general shout out to you Atlus staffers for all the hard work you're putting into the games. Thank you ♥

Once upon a time, a moderator named Rednusander was between projects, so he took it upon himself to update an internal database with information on just about EVERY GAME we had ever published.
But then, one fateful night, there was a power outage at Atlus USA. As it turns out, this internal database was stored on a such a craptacular old computer, the power surge fried it.
That only thing that saved Red from going postal was the IT department's pacifying news that it could be restored.
But many weeks passed, and the database was not restored. So when an unsuspecting forum member named Fuyukaze asked an unassuming question... ...... ......

1. When will Atlus be localizing Super Robot Taisen Original Generations and super Robot Taisen Original Generation Gaiden?
2. Are there any licensing issues with either game?
3. If the games were to be localized, do you have an estimate as to how many people would need to buy each game in order to at least break even on the costs?
4. And out of those people, is there a number of them that Atlus thinks will actually buy the games?
It never hurts to ask just how much money is standing in the way. Because it can't be a lack of fan interest with a topic that's been staying strong on the suggestions forum for a good 2 years now despite many giving up hope. And it can't be the fact that there's no market for the PS2, because people still have them and can still get them via stores or ordering online. I'm pretty sure it's not a licensing issue, at least with the characters. However, I may be wrong.
Now to play the waiting game and hope that this leads to an explanation of exactly why US fans aren't getting their hotblooded eye candy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmFEXNpmCLA).

Come on guys, give it up now. The dream is dead. If they make a current gen SRT OG then jump on that right away, but let these die in peace already.
The dream isn't dead as long as Atlus exists. OGs and OGG were released around 2 years ago. Atlus released OG 4 years after it was originally released in Japan. They're current, just not cutting edge on an expensive console. And that works because the audience, while not niche enough for there to be no market, is too niche for an overpriced current generation release. Heck, they released OG for GBA when the DS was picking up speed. Mind you, that seems like a far less wise decision than releasing a couple games for the PS2 that are harder to find, download and emulate. And I have jumped on the EXCEED bandwagon as well, because that's also an OG title with seemingly no new licensing issues to inflate production costs. But it's release is all but guaranteed considering Atlus already localized the first EF. But then again, I may be underestimating how quickly Atlus is prepared to kick SRT fans to the curb.
Anyway, until 5 years have passed without any word on an OGs and OGG release there's still a reason to support an Atlus localization of both games. And if there's one lesson taught in all games, it's that giving up is a guaranteed Game Over. And giving up on this would disqualify from ever calling myself a real Super Robot Taisen fan.
Now on to the next round of questions:
1. What factual basis does Atlus have for measuring the number of Super Robot Taisen fans in the US and labeling them as "the few?"
2. Has Atlus factored in an accurate number of foreigners who can't speak or read Japanese importing copies of the game?
3. If the games were to be localized, do you have an estimate as to how many people would need to buy each game in order to at least break even on the costs?
4. And out of those people, is there a number of them that Atlus thinks will actually buy the games?
5. Are there any licensing issues with either game?
Atlus seems to be underestimating The Passion of the Hotblooded. It may be waning due to Atlus' campaign to ignore our desire to play english releases of OGs and OGG, but it is not dead yet. Not until every last fan has given up hope. But by the power of supply and demand, that will not happen. As long as there is no supply, there will be demand. And there will always be at least one fan who continues carrying the torch for a release of all Original Generation games in a language that most US Citizens can understand.

Now on to the next round of questions:
1. What factual basis does Atlus have for measuring the number of Super Robot Taisen fans in the US and labeling them as "the few?"
Come on, man. Just think about that one real hard... What number could Atlus possibly have that would help them determine if a game series had enough people that were interested in it... Hmm... I wonder that would be...?
2. Has Atlus factored in an accurate number of foreigners who can't speak or read Japanese importing copies of the game?
That's going to be accounted for in that theoretical number probably...
3. If the games were to be localized, do you have an estimate as to how many people would need to buy each game in order to at least break even on the costs?
I'm fairly disappointed that you think that you would even consider a situation where we'd be releasing games without having this estimate.
4. And out of those people, is there a number of them that Atlus thinks will actually buy the games?
That theoretical number I referenced earlier would probably be insightful in this respect, too... What could that magical number possibly be...?
5. Are there any licensing issues with either game?
Yes.
But by the power of supply and demand, that will not happen. As long as there is no supply, there will be demand.
Just realize that "demand" in economics has no "intensity" factor.

Sales numbers from previous games in the series. They were likely low, ergo it is not in Atlus' best interest to bother with the series anymore.

Exactly, ATLUS is a low production company as is, so lets be real, if they have a problem selling their stock(whatever amount ATLUS decides to make for the initial print run), the odds are they might as well not bother bringing over the rest of the series.

Not in so many words, but for the "most part", yes that is the general case when dealing with a series(there are a few exceptions, like when a game gets an insane amount of press, thus helps to increase interest in the game).
Fan base drives a series, any person not familiar(thus new to the series) are generally not the ones that will blindly buy a game(besides alot of people new to the series, would rather start with the ones that came before, not the one that is just coming out), that is part of a series(aka they would usually look up tons of info before deciding rather to buy or not buy it), Granted the fact It's an ATLUS game would help with that somewhat, but only to a certain extent.

Why? Do you intend to find and buy up ALL remaining new copies of the games?
Besides, I'm fairly certain that they (Atlus) will judge their sales by what was purchased by vendors and those numbers are firmly set now. Any residual stock likely would have no part in the equation.
Also, not even sure why I'm trying here since I'm assuming this explaination will fall on deaf ears. I'm a glutton for punishment I guess.

Design-wise, I've always been partial to Scathach, Nebiros, Lilith, and Seraph (who you'll see in SJ). Overall in terms of personality and design, I think my favorite would be Mokoi from the PS2 Devil Summoner games. His speech and animation are so oddball, especially in his Professor Mokoi guise; he's got a long-range attack and War Cry, which are both great skills especially for a low-level demon like him; and he's one of the fairly few Murngin demons in the series, which is a mythology that's always fascinated me.

We can't really crack open our business plans and make those kinds of numbers public. What we can say, though, is that even if by some miracle you're a gajillionare and you went and bought up every existing copy of those titles... The retailers would thank you for clearing their stock and put something new and pertinent in the shelf space those games were taking up.
What they wouldn't do, is order more. That's the difference between "sell-in" and "sell-through," which means, just to spell it out for you, even if you WERE to do that, you'd end up having very little effect.

Elysion Zero,
You realize responding to posts in this thread is a pretty cool gesture by the employees of Atlus USA right? Not many game publishing companies bother to do something like this.
Spamming questions that are unreasonable to ask a company, like asking about business practices, may make them reluctant to even bother checking this thread or hesitant about having a thread like this in the first place.
I'm not suggesting that you don't ask questions. I have hounded them about certain games in the past as well - but not to the degree you are doing here. However, I would suggest being a little more practical / realistic about what questions you pose and the frequency in which you pose them.

Atlus, how do the MANLY TEARS of Super Robot Taisen fans taste?
Better than the bitter tears of bankruptcy and unemployment, I'll tell you that.
1. Is Atlus in such bad financial shape that Original Generations and/or OG Gaiden would bankrupt it?
2. Did Atlus consider that not appeasing their new Super Robot loving buyerbase with games that are far less easily pirated could have something to do with it? Or that it could have something to do with however poorly the franchise is faring here, with only handheld games that you can download at the internet equivalent of a gaming soup kitchen?
I don't know. Maybe it's just me, but throwing the two greatest Super Robot Taisen games, and possibly more in the future, under the bus doesn't quite make one want to buy other Atlus games to support you guys.
3. If you were to publish EXCEED, would you dub it?
4. If EXCEED were to be published, would the game take longer to be released than the first game was?
5. If you published EXCEED, would you feel any sense of remorse for not publishing OGs and OG Gaiden since both contain significant new backstory material regarding at least two of the new characters?
Because OG2, the last main OGverse game you published, left with Axel being killed on Neviim (read: the Death Star) and Alfimi perishing in space along with her mech. There's an entire game's worth of plot between then and EXCEED. Namco x Capcom was also a game's worth of backstory, but while it's a SRT style crossover OGs and OGG aren't.

1. Is Atlus in such bad financial shape that Original Generations and/or OG Gaiden would bankrupt it?
No company would release a game if they did not expect it to make a profit. I am not going to go into detail with you about how such expectations are calculated at Atlus.
Let's put it this way: the only SRT games that possibly have a chance of seeing the light of day in NA, barring some kind of planetary realignment that makes all the various licenseholders hold hands and start dancing in a field together, are ones without the huge number of licenses. That equates to the OG games, which number: two GBA games, one DS game (with another in development), and one PS2 game. That's three handhelds and a last-generation console that stores don't want to stock games for. So however "easily pirated" the games are, that's all that's going to be available.
I don't know. Maybe it's just me, but throwing the two greatest Super Robot Taisen games, and possibly more in the future, under the bus doesn't quite make one want to buy other Atlus games to support you guys.
Don't buy our games because you hope to get better games in the future. Get games you think are good now and enjoy them. Luckily, enough people enjoy the games we release to keep us in the business of localizing more games.

Do you even realize the level of cognitive dissonance you have to have to make these two statements?
One the one hand, you're saying that Super Robot fans are so fickle that they are unwilling to pay for games that they can pirate. But yet, we're now the bad guy, because these same rabid fans who have theoretically stolen 3 games from us at this point should be catered to?
We love the Super Robot games here. I've personally played through all 3 that we made. (and yes, I DO have to pay for my own copies here. Also, I didn't pirate any of them. Maybe I'm not a true fan, huh?) I don't understand how you're getting the idea that Atlus U.S.A., the company the published 3 games in the series, and the only company in the United States that has published ANY of them, is somehow "throwing the series under the bus".
Shouldn't you be mad at every other company here who didn't try publishing these games here? Our management took 3 chances on putting something out their that the fans would love. The people who worked on these games busted their asses on these games, and put their heart and soul into them. Everyone who worked on them is simultaneously very happy that the fanbase loves the work they did so much, and very disappointed that more people didn't see the love they put into their work. (or were unwilling to pay to see said love.)
I don't know why you're getting frustrated with us, like you think we're some doorman preventing you from getting inside the happening club when we already let you inside 3 times. If another SRT title comes along that doesn't have licensing nightmares and doesn't have the specific retail viability problems that the games you are suggesting have, bring it to our attention, and we will look into publishing it. We love working on games fans love. we love pleasing our fans, but if we did every game that our fans wanted, we simply wouldn't be around to please them anymore.
