Lately I have been craving some Atlus merchandise. It seems obvious based off of the good reception of all the preorder bonuses that customers would be interested in artbooks, soundtracks, posters, figures, plushes, etc. Is there any hope Atlus fans will ever see merchandise for their games? We don't have internal software devs; most of the localization implementation is done by the original Japanese devs of whatever game. (So no, comments in Japanese don't bother them much.)

Okay I'll ask my question here since Fatlus doesn't care... This is the exact letter I sent.


Dear Atlus,

I am a big fan of Persona 3 and Persona 4. They are such fantastic games that I now compare all of the other rpgs I play to those two. I have a question about them though. Do Persona 3 and Persona 4 have canon pairings? If so, are the ones that I believe to be canon correct?

For Persona 3, I think the canon pairings are the following:

Protagonist x Yukari
Junpei x Chidori
Akihiko x Misturu

And I know for sure that Junpei finds Fuuka attractive.

With Persona 4 it is much harder to figure out the canon relationships. Part of the reason is because the player has a choice of choosing a girlfriend for each playthrough. I honestly think this feature was added in for replay value however. I tried to pay attention to every detail to see if the developers gave some hints for the canon pairings. And I came up with these:

Protagonist x Yukiko
Yosuke x Chie
Kanji x Naoto

All of these pairings not only have in game evidence supporting it, they also work with this “box art theory” I came up with. My box art theory is the belief that the canon relationships were placed strategically on the cover art of the box. If you take a look at the box art you find that:

Naoto is across from Kanji.

Chie is across from Yosuke.

The protagonist is between both Rise and Yukiko. But, Yukiko’s portrait is drawn significantly bigger, showing that the developers not only favor her in the story, but even on the box art. Although Rise is almost across from Yosuke, I believe that she is placed that way because they had to fit Teddie right under her.

And Teddie is inside a T.V and does not count. However, he is very close to the protagonist and an auto social link so perhaps that is why he is placed there.

So that’s what I think. Again, Do Persona 3 and Persona 4 have canon pairings in the first place. And if so, are the ones that I just wrote about correct? Thanks for your time and the fantastic games.

canon pairing speculation

There aren't any "canon" relationships with regards to the ones that the player has a choice over. Yukari's concern about the PC in FES is more due to the fact that she's the kind of person who would get more upset over the events of P3 than the others, not necessarily that they were extremely close.

As of yet, there's no canon pairing for P4.

And no, I don't pay attention to the manga adaptations, so don't throw those at me as an argument.

Atlus and Sting today announced a business tie-up covering the fields of game development and publishing. Under today's agreement, Atlus will acquire the exclusive publishing rights to all Sting-developed titles at home and abroad. While Atlus obtains high-quality development capabilities and popular IPs through the deal, Sting will gain access to Atlus' superior publishing and distribution channels.
As a result of the tie-up, the Shin Megami Tensei makers hope to increase unit sales by 50% during the next fiscal year. Moreover, Atlus' aim is to secure a spot in the "Top 5" of RPG makers. To reach this goal, the company is apparently also considering the option of letting Sting work on Atlus' own IPs in the future.

Tokyo-based Sting is best known as the shop behind Baroque, Riviera, Yggdra Union and Knights in the Nightmare. It is worth noting that all four of these games have been published (or in the latter case, will soon be published) in North America by Atlus USA.

Does this mean that we can expect some benefits from this in the summer?

I needed a strategy game for me and my wife to kill some time with so I picked up Spectral Force 3. Now as I was searching for information on SF3 I came across the Atlas site and had a couple of questions.

1: Are you planning to provide official character descriptions for all of the unlockable characters within the game?

2: Would there be a way to acquire the demo video you have in the media section to display on the front page of my review for it?

I am finally at my last straw of annoyance. I know generally people check out trailers more than websites on games, but as videos are not available to me at work, I like to check out the websites.

I cannot see why you can't put up a fully active website in time for a new game announcement. If I want to know more about the game, I'd like to find more info than "coming soon" on most of the links. It makes no sense for me to keep checking back weekly or however long it takes to update and add a bit or two of new information. How ridiculous!!

The hires video on youtube will work fine, I only wanted a raw file for preservation purposes that didn't involve using alternative recording means for the best quality. But it will be fine. And I am writing stories on all the characters themselves as I play through the series.

SFIII was my first in the series to be honest and I just picked up Spectral Souls as well. I do with that SFIII had as many options that Souls did, without the loading of course. I will also likely get the EU release of Spectral vs Generation unless a US release is planned.

Based off what I have read the games do seem to be connected, so I guess I do have one more question:

Are there currently any more of the Spectral series games looking to be published stateside?

Oh yeah. The characters are intensely connected. We had to do a lot of research to figure out why people were saying what they were.

I can't honestly say, because I don't know what everyone else is planning. However, Yuke's USA released Neverland Card Battles last year. The "Spectral" series of games falls under the whole Neverland universe, so you'll see a lot of people from Spectral Force 3.

You would hope that, but I don't think that is the case. I have seen quite talented web designers work much faster that this... even with several other projects on hand.

And HYPE is a terrible excuse. I generally do not return to a website that is "under construction". They can do the HYPE thing with teaser trailers.

When gamers sit here and say what they do or don't like, or even suggestions of SMT titles, where they are made in Japan. Does Atlus Japan even get western feedback? You guys sitting there putting in our thoughts and sending it to them to go over?

I ask this because I read Play Magazine's interview with Meguro, Soejima and Hashino said they don't hear anything outside of Japan, and the only feedback they get anything on is from reviews or previews. Where as the stuff from gamers in Japan are heard, obviously since they can read Japanese and whatnot.

Just curious because I'd like to know if I'm wasting my time or not with those threads.

Here's a question of interest: Will Atlus ever improve their support of the EU market like Koei have done already in the form of a EU subsidiary as well as NIS who've also set up a EU subsidiary with their games being distributed by SquareEnix.

Basically, I and I guess, a lot of other EU Atlus supporters are probably frustrated that when some of your games do come out over here, we don't get any of the pre-order stuff that the Americans get [one notorious example being the special P4 Bonus Pack from Amazon.com].

With the new Devil Summoner game for the PS2, fortunately a friend of mine was willing to let me use her address so I could have it shipped from Amazon.com while I pay her for the postage and packing to ship it to the UK plus a bit extra as a way to say thanks.

Here in Europe, a lot of people tend to be into boring games like FPS'es and casual games and we never get enough choice here as far as niche games are concerned so if Atlus could show us some love in Europe with a official subsidiary, we'll definitely support you guys! [especially if you give us Spoils like the Americans have, but please cut down on the soundtrack CD's and artbooks!]

Of course we take the input of the fans and pass it on. We don't just dump a giant block quote of every post on them, because they wouldn't have time to deal with all of that.

It's just that in both volume and timeliness, it pales in comparison to the direct feedback they're getting from the Japanese fans. Don't think that we're just completely ignoring everything here, just be aware that it may not be a huge factor in Japan's decision making processes.

They did, but you'll know how long it's been since Trauma Center: Under the Knife 2 was released. If you don't, it came to North America on July 1, 2008. Now, I know, we Europeans had to wait +/- 10 months longer for Second Opinion and +/- 12 months longer for New Blood, but I was hoping for a confirmation that it would be released at all, and perhaps an explanation from Atlus to their European fans why Nintendo or they are taking so long.

Here's a question of interest: Will Atlus ever improve their support of the EU market like Koei have done already in the form of a EU subsidiary as well as NIS who've also set up a EU subsidiary with their games being distributed by SquareEnix.


As a subsidiary ourselves, it isn't within our scope to expand into the EU market. Atlus Japan has that ability, but Atlus USA is just that - the North American subsidiary.

I've got to agree with Thray sama, in the end it's depressing to see the Americans get all the best pre-order content and then we have to pay more, wait longer and get no bonuses. It's good you take the feedback about games to Japan but I advise you do the same about the pre-order stuff and at least tell the Japanese Atlus that there's a lot of fans who don't like being treat second class. 1. Have you looked up how much it costs to advertise on TV? It's like, a lot, unless you wanna put it on some kind of small town network, which is probably the last group of people who want to see anything about a product called Devil Survivor.

I'm actually a pretty big collector, and while I do love owning physical goods, I know that if I keep buying stuff at the same rate that I have been for the past few years... I'm sure some of our more tenured staff could regale you with stories of senseless drama from the olden days, but the newer SMT titles have been considerably lighter on so-called "controversial" material. Keep in mind, it's not like SMT games are made with the intention to stir controversy, so no, I'm not surprised at how little there has been. P4 generated some fairly healthy discussions on homosexuality in gaming, and in P3, despite the number of people who took issue with kids putting guns to their heads, that too generated some intelligent discourse on symbolism.

You can still get the game for a little over $50 shipped at Amazon (NA version) or Play-Asia (EU version). Yeah, it's above retail, but if you're really interested in the game I'd check those options.

One of the guys here has the Playskool Indiana Jones and the Taters of the Lost Ark Mr. Potato Head toy on his desk. The hat has a switch that if you press down, it plays a piece of the Indiana Jones theme song. If you press it twice more, it continues almost the entire piece. I WANT THE HAT.

In addition to my already impressive localization/forum mod resume, I am also a certified sandwich artist.

My qualifications to answer this question out of the way, I must first preface this by saying that I don't know what kind of sandwich you are intent on having here. You really haven't given me much to go on. I mean, the right pepper on the wrong sandwich? Catastrophic.

So, a safe bet, much like many sandwich chains do, would be sliced peppercinis. They add subtle spice in addition to texture and flavor if used in moderation.

Or, if you'd really like to think outside the box, and this what you'll often find in european or asian sandwiches, you could go the cilantro route. Naturally spicy, this herb makes a great substitute for peppers and goes with a much wider variety of sandwich styles. For instance, where peppercinis would more or less ruin an egg salad sandwich, cilantro would be an appropriate way to spice it up.

Bell peppers or Raw Habaneros (if on like to makeones self tourtured by a humble cheeseburger) try various things you wouldnt normally put in a burger.

Pepperonicinis aren't really like jalapenos. They're a lot milder, and they're generally brined, so they're kind of vinegary. Jalapenos are a little strong for a standard sammich, so I recommend mild peppers that give you a little smoky heat like maybe some chipotle (a roasted jalapeno) or an Anaheim pepper.

As far as the cheese on the burger goes, use havarti. Great burger cheese.

If you want a good bleu cheese burger, work the crumbles into the meat as you're forming the patties. They get infused with all the juicy goodness*, and there's little danger of it falling out of the burger as you eat it.

*Of course, this only applies if you eat your burgers at least somewhat rare. If you like the taste of carbon, I can't help you.

We certainly recognize that SMT is the foundation for Atlus's gaming history, and each new game only adds to that. Of course we enjoy it!

Why does Atlus Japan make this stuff and not Atlus USAtlus USA is a publisher--they don't "make" games, they just "translate" them for us in America.

It's kinda like...Atlus USA is Atlus Japan's wife! The games they localize are the babies, see? So it's like...the games are from both of them...but not really =O There's also illegitimate children here and there (non-Atlus developed titles that Atlus USA publishes)

I have been hearing about how small Atlus is. They are really now the only company i buy games from now. Them and Natsume. I wish people didnt say they were so small. Because they are not !!!

I'll agree if you're Plastic Man has Plastic explosive as a weapon. And even if it does you should know the Metal blades are stainless steel; why else do you think they are so overpowered to almost everyone including the one wielding it?

One more questions that relates to SMT, what are you're favorite soundtracks in SMT. Mine are the ones in P3 and P4 plus the ones in DDS. (I even have some friends who don't play persona like the music of P3/P4)
