IRVINE, CALIFORNIA -- FEBRUARY 11, 2009 -- Atlus U.S.A. today announced that it has secured the North American publishing rights for Knights in the Nightmare™, a groundbreaking new gaming experience for Nintendo DS™. Certain to be one of the most innovative titles of 2009, Knights in the Nightmare is wholly unique. Not easily placed in any one genre, the game requires players to throw out everything they know about roleplaying and strategy games and embrace something altogether new and fresh. Frantic, energetic action mixes with thought-provoking tactical gameplay, all within a beautifully-rendered fantasy setting and presented through a captivating, emotional narrative. Dripping with style and originality, Knights in the Nightmare delivers an unforgettable experience.
Knights in the Nightmare is scheduled for release on June 2, 2009 with an MSRP of $34.99.

About Knights in the Nightmare
Somewhere between heaven and the underworld -- in the center of a quiet lake -- stood an ancient castle known as Aventheim. One night, without warning, denizens of the netherworld emerged and slaughtered the kingdom; nary a soul was left alive.
Within an abandoned, long-forgotten church deep in the woods, a wisp is set free. Bereft of memory, it is drawn toward the monster-infested castle and re-awakens the souls of the vanquished knights, leading them back towards the fallen stronghold to confront the very forces of evil that took their lives.
Key Features
- An experience unlike any before it -- Incorporating strategy RPG, real-time strategy, and shooter elements, you've never experienced a game like this. Control a Wisp with your stylus and activate the souls of deceased knights to aid you in destroying foes on the map. Enemies fire bullets in multiple directions, making it vital for players to master the unique touch controls.
- Over 100 playable characters -- Find and recruit the ghosts of seven different classes of knights from your kingdom, and learn of their pasts, hopes, dreams, and untimely deaths. Sacrifice their souls to one another to balance their skills and create your ultimate party.
- A tale from two perspectives -- This twice-told legend entangles you in a dark and brooding tale that is simultaneously examined through events both past and present. Complete the adventure to unlock the ability to play through the game with a new narrative twist, placing the antagonist in the starring role.
Knights in the Nightmare has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

So that brings my Atlus USA purshases for the year upto 3 so far. That's probably all for the first half of 09, unless there are some surprises that haven't been leaked yet, but it'll do.

Has cool boxart but I am not too sure on the game. Gave the email a read and doesn't seem like my type of game. Screenshots didn't really impress me. I still have more than enough to look forward to on the DS with Legacy of Ys, Fire Emblem, and Valkyrie Profile coming out.

Wait...they are porting Valkyrie Profile to DS too? What's next a Wii, 360 and PS3 version and a year later a PC version?
Anyways, i'd watch some videos too. It's definitely a unique game.

I'm pretty excited about Knights in the Nightmare. The ability to play through as the antagonist after you've cleared the game for the first time is awesome. More games could/should do that. :)

That's surprising. It's just a knee-jerk reaction for me these days on Square-Enix published/developed titles. The overlords of ports/remakes. So i assumed it was another port.

Unfortunately, I think it has sold like crap which doesn't bode too well. I do highly recommend it, though if it does somehow make its way over here. Its a darn shame, though. I find it very unique and creative and the poor sales reception may cause Square Enix to be more conservative in the future (keeping in mind the similar situation with The World Ends With You).

Seconded. I really love how a lot of the recent DS titles are getting the soundtrack Spoils treatment, but in this case I'd rather get Yggdra Union in a package similar to the Japanese release--even if it means a higher ($40-45 wouldn't be unreasonable) price point. Yggdra Union is getting pretty tough to find without taking one's chances on whether or not that eBay/Amazon seller is going to try and slip you a bootleg.

Yggdra Union was reported as a necessity to unlock a secret character known as Pamela. The Japanese DHE Special Pack was supposed to address the needs of those who did not buy YUGBA the first time, but how will DSi owners get hold of Pamela - considering the DSi does not come with a GBA cartridge slot?

Good question.
I wonder if Atlus just removed access to Pamela entirely, since it doesn't seem viable to release a package with Yggdra Union, and the DSi is already out (in Japan, dunno the NA release date, but it could be before KitN for all we know :V).

Actually, I was wondering if Atlus would do like XSEED did with Wild ARMs 5, and add directly this character. It would be too bad to have to own the GBA version, since the PSP one is much better. -_-

Guessing you're probably going to want to hang on to that GBA slot.
Pretty much a reason why I bought a DSL yesterday, and didn't wait until the DSi came out. If you were to ask me, the DSi is more of a downgrade than an upgrade. 2 cameras and DSiWare (and a larger screen) is hardly any real incentive imo to upgrade, especially if DSiWare is anything like WiiWare. The removal of the GBA slot is a HUGE no-no if you ask me.
Lorinosan
02-12-2009, 10:14 AM
^ I agree with this. Let's not forget the $179.99 price they're going to be asking for it. You want me to get rid of my fantastic GBA library for a mere two cameras, a slightly larger screen, AND pay more then I paid for my DSlite? Sorry, but I'm not seeing a proper trade-off here.
It's like the GBA SP all over again when they removed the headphone jack. >.<

Yep use the money you save from buying a DSL versus a DSi, and put it towards some more atlus games. Atlus is more deserving of it than Nintendo these days, especially since Nintendo prints money.

I plan on getting a DSi day one for DSiWare, but I'll be keeping my DS Lite. I'm sure I could use it for...Pokemon or something. >_>

Hopefully my curent old and fat DS will still be working by the time the epicness that is KITN (KITTEN) comes out.
Day one by the way. :D
I guess I don't see what the issue is with DSi compatibility. For the time being, a concrete release date hasn't been announced for not-Japan, so the only people who will really have a problem are the early import adopters who then tossed (or never had) their regular DS--hardly Atlus' target audience.
Also, I'm not sure the DSi should be regarded as either an upgrade or a downgrade to the DS--more like a side-grade, if you will. It adds some pretty impressive features such as internal memory, SD support and a built-in web browser at the cost of the GBA slot--a feature I use quite often in my trusty launch DS fat. I'll certainly grab the DSi when it comes out, but I'll probably hang onto the DS for the same reason I still have my GBA SP--for the previous generation of games that gets cut out of the new hardware (well, mostly because I can't give up my paddle controller for Space Invaders Extreme).
And hey, if it comes down to it you could always swipe a friend's DS/DS Lite for a few minutes and get the bonus goodies that way.
Then again, I argue this point not so much because I'm concerned about unlockable extras with Yggdra Union, but because I hope they toss the game in with KitN so I don't have to try my luck with third party sellers to get a copy, heh.

Well, these are the current suggestions:
i.) do the YUGBA pack for America. This will mean extra costs of course due to production costs and since this is reflected in the Japanese DHE pack's MSRP, I would expect the 2 in 1 bundle to cost more as well.
ii.) as ShadowYuri said, they could just ask Sting to make slight modifications to the code for Pamela to be playable. This is my favorite solution as it is a low cost win-win situation for almost everyone. The only ones who will be left out are those who want to play Yggdra Union, but don't own a PSP.
iii.) they could throw in spoils (artbook/cd) to compensate for the lack of Pamela.
Personally I would prefer they go ii) and iii) myself, as I already own Yggdra Union PSP. Now I understand that not everyone owns both a DSL and a PSP, so this is purely a subjective take on the issue, coming from someone who has both systems.

I hope they really give this the full Atlus treatment with a bonus soundtrack CD or an artbook (or both), not just because it's some grand niche title but also because it recieved a Jury Recommended Work award in the Japan Media Arts Festival (http://group.tyo.jp/files/en/news/79/pdf/knights081212.pdf). edit: Just found out that its made by Sting, pre-ordered. (Now I hope I won't get jacked by a superior PSP remake! Ugh, that still burns.)
Maybe I have too much faith in Sting, but I just LOVE their games. Its like Oldschool, but original in their own ways, just the way I like it.

Sting released a pretty incredible Dept. Heaven Art Book, it would be awesome to get even a fraction of the pictures and info as Spoils!

I'm surprised everyone knew about it beforehand, I was actually worried that Sting wasn't releasing anything other than ports for a while. Maybe I need to start finding better game sites or something...

I hope they don't have another soundtrack, I already have one for YU (imported), Luminous Arc (downloaded, it's the @#$!# 6th most expensive thing on Amazon), Luminous Arc 2 (did you know the song titles on the back are wrong? 1 is 4, 2 is 5, 3 is 6, 4 is Eight), Knights in the Nightmare (downloaded as well, but I'm waiting on my two-disc), and I'm still looking for the Riviera OST CD.
An art book would be sooooo much better.
BTW, Day One.

I prefer soundtracks over art books. I can listen to them when I'm working or doing something else, unlike art books which require all my attention to enjoy them. I still have piles of games in my backlog, I prefer to send free gaming time to play games and not look at art books most of the time.

Art books are made to be read on the crapper.

This sounds very cool indeed man Atlus is on a roll ever week or so they just keep throwing out one more game I have to pick up. I think this is the year where my bank account will hurt the most. :-o:-P

Seriously, I have even less money then last year and they're pumping out like 13 games from now to July. Atlus must be working their asses off!
Anyway, just for the record I perfer art books, but only when a game has great art, like Okami (best video game artbook I've read). Though I like a lot of commentary from the devs/artist b because I find this stuff extremely interesting, but soundtracks kick butt too since my iPod has like every good game soundtrack I have.

Yea I like Art books more then soundtracks because if I like the art style I tend to draw my own version of the art, with the soundtrack you can listen to it a couple of times and put it on a MP3 player to take on the go but no matter how much a fan you are there are always a track or two that you don't really care for. Also as this is the INTERNET and every knows that people who get the soundtrack most likely will rip it to the net and everyone and there mother can has access to it. (Come on you know its true) So to get the artbook just seem to be a more personal feeling to it because even if someone puts it on the net you have to look at on a laptop or a computer version versus sitting in the Bathroom or couch.
Wow I type way to much....

How about a Soundtrack AND an Art book a la Luminous Arc 2? They'll probably do the art book (Cross fingers for "Dept. Heaven" artbook...), as Sting already has a full 2-disc soundtrack in Japan for the game (unlike, say, Luminous Arc 2, or Legacy of Ys).

I'll crush your sense of gratitude with my sense of entitlement.
I think the only soundtrack I've ever listened to was the SH3 one and that's cause Youre not here is awesome. An artbook that actually came with every copy of the game (A la P3), would probably make me day one this. A soundtrack certainly wouldn't, expecially if it drives the price of the game up.
Very much on the fence on this one.

Have you gotten the chance to hear the soundtracks to either Nocturne or either Digital Devil Saga games? As far as the soundtracks I've gotten to hear (actual ones, not OC remixes), those three are my favorites, along with SH3 which I agree with you completely on.

I would also prefer an art book, but have you heard any of the soundtrack? It's wonderful, dark and epically orchestrated. Shigeki Hayashi's finest to date!

WOW atlus is all i have to say its preety self explantatory that you make some of the best games on the planet(in my opioin anyway) because you seem to know that fans enjoy cool games that sometimes come with cool extras; like artbooks and music cds, it means alot to this gamer that you care enough to even add extras. But i do have one question: will this title or devil survivor come with any extras involved in pre-orders, i thought I'd ask.
Well, they just announced artbooks for it, so everybody is happy :)
Day one!
I'll give it a listen Four Black Hearts, hope its good. Awesome avatar btw!

I love artbooks. Artbooks are the reason I broke down and bought Eternal Poison and Luminous Arc 2. I already had KitN pre-ordered, and I am thrilled that it will include an art book.
Artbooks are so much better than soundtracks, IMO. (though if the soundtrack is awesome like Nocturne, they're cool too). It's something physical you can hold in your hands, flip through, and appreciate it's beauty time and again.

I'd be mad, but it's for freakin' KitN. I am happy. Exceedingly so.

Are you joking? :)
In this period I see too many games with girls, girls, girls and girls! There are always a few men and badly made.
See Disgaea, Agarest, Rorona, Valkyria chronicles... Uff
