View Full Version : Loved Persona 4, what's next?

Well I've played Persona 4 twice and thoroughly enjoyed the game. I thought that Persona 3 would be a good choice as my next SMT game, yet there are quite a few posts that say some things would annoy me coming from Persona 4. Then, I kept hearing about SMT Nocturne. Finally, there's another SMT game (Devil Summoner 2) coming out soon that looks fun. So here I am with three choices. Which game should I go with or is there another SMT game to check out?
I should note that while I'm not a big fan of random battles, if the game is good enough, I'll put up with it. Besides, it's not like I haven't gotten used to random battles before. I also don't like not having full control of my party. Hence, there are different drawbacks to the three games listed. Right now I'm leaning towards Devil Summoner 2 to mix up the regular RPG I just played (and I will be going onto Disgaea soon) with an action RPG.

So have you played the Digita Devil Saga entries? If not, that's 4 (5) more choices to revel in.
You can't go wrong with any of the SMT titles, so long as you actually get all of them.

Paragraphs... look into them.
All of the PS2 SMT titles are worth your time. Devil Summoner 2 won't come out for another three months so get its prequel for less than 20$ and play the crap outta that.

Personally, I'd go with Nocturne, but that's also because I already have it. Nocturne is the game that single- handedly made me love Atlus and the Shin Megami Tensei series thanks to its dark undertones, its wonderful story, and how it made me question morals or consider what is right/wrong. But then again, I also loved Persona 3, maybe even more so than 4. Persona 3 just had more little quirks in the game play, like certain characters not being able to fight on certain days, or your overall health having and affect on your combat. I suppose you can just take this post as my declaration of love for Nocturne, and great admiration of Persona 3, but I honestly suggest you check out Nocturne first. Though, all three are great games. (I'm assuming this to be the case with Devil Summoner, since I have yet to play that, just the same I'm sure any of the three will suit your needs.)

Digital Devil Saga are a bit more streamlined and have excellent presentation, however I still prefer Nocturne more (which also had great presentation despite no VO). If you like presentation and mood those games are better than Persona and Devil Summoner, however they do have random battles (though they aren't too bad since you are given a bit of a notification, in Nocturne anyway I think, I need to go back to Digital Devil Saga). Devil Summoner is a bit different and I personally would not recommend it, its random battles come at an annoying clip, the combat is overly simple and it has the weakest presentation of the SMT games out on PS2. I am curious about Devil Summoner 2 though.

If you can Find a copy, Pick up Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (Innocent Sin never came over). It is a game well worth you time. It also is not an easy game eather. By Far it is the hardest of all 4 Persona gmaes

I went back after playing Persona 4 and played Persona 3 for the first time, and while there are some parts that I didn't really like, the getting tired is a bit annoying IMO, it's still a great game overall. And I just got Nocturne and am loving it so far. It's awesome. So either one is a great choice.

Eternal Punishment seems to be re-released every now and again, so that is a good pick if you can find it. Other than that Nocturne is pretty cool.

I think that was one of the things I missed about Persona 3, was the removal of tired status and whatnot. It added more depth to the game, and forced you to plan out better. Hopefully Persona 5 brings it back.
If they could take the difficulty of Persona 4 normal battles, and the difficulty of Persona 3 boss battles. It'd be awesome. P4's bosses felt too much like it was a pattern. Where P3 was more random had used status ailments much more.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I decided to go with Persona 3 after all. Well, Amazon selling out of Nocturne also affected my decision. I think I'll pick up FES now instead of waiting too long and missing out.

You do know that FES includes everything P3 had and more right?

Yeah. I'm picking up FES. There's no point in getting the original with FES out and available.

Even though those aren't SMT games, thanks for your input. I'll check those out as well after I play through my current backlog.

I loved Digital Devil Saga. That's what really got me into the SMT line, more than anything else. I found the intense characterization, something that Nocturne didn't have as much of, wonderful.

Actually that was something that Digital Devil Saga did do better in my opinion, plus the game itself looks and sounds extremely good.

I can't believe theres still people who havn't played nocturne. Holy crap, don't worry about any other game till you own it. It crushes other rpg's with it's awesome awesomeness. Forever.
Don't pass go. Go directly to hell.
Hum... I still haven't played, but I do own it. I had the good sense of buying it when was about to be sold out on Amazon. Finished Xenosaga II yesterday, so after the exams I should be able to play through in two weeks and review it for the No Continues (http://nocontinues.net).
After that, it's going to be both the DDS, or the Xenosaga III.

Persona 3: FES or DDS 1. DDS 1 still has my favorite characters in any SMT game and the best ending.
I'm almost done with Persona 4 myself, and if the killer is who I've thought it was since the second month, I will burn my copy. So...here goes to wishin'.

Though this is just my opinion, I think every one of the PS2 era SMT games has had a distinct advantage over the others, and other games in general as a result.
Nocturne had atmosphere. I mean, damn was it creepy, soul-crushing, yet the most fun I have ever had getting killed 25 times by the Matador. Best world of them all.
DDS 1 & 2 (moreso 2) had the absolute best music I've heard in a video game to date. The characters came alive for me, and the cutscenes kept me riveted and interested, rather than bored. Best characterization of them all.
Persona 3 & FES took me a long time to get to like. But I find it has the best replay value, and the best character art style of the series.
Persona 4 had the best use of the gameplay mechanics, and a much more interesting story than P3, which in my opinion was way too slow and often bored me to tears.
Just my own thoughts & opinions.
