I posted this on gamefaqs a little while ago but I decided to post it here also. I don't know if anyone involved with this game or bringing it over glances at these boards or not but I just had to add it here. Most things posted or spoken are negative (I'm not talking about this board but all boards and life in general) so I thought I'd write this as a "thank you" of sorts.
This game was outstanding- from the story, to the characters, the combat and the music... just a great, great game.
I enjoy most all JRPGs to some extent, they're just the games I like playing. I care most about a game's story and character interactions/development than I do combat and love games with some romance in them (I like the ladies, what can I say lol). I try to beat any RPG I start playing regardless of how good or bad it is.
However, I have found that most RPGs I play now, at some point in the game, I start wanting to go ahead and beat it. I just get to that point that I'm playing more for the desire to go ahead and finish it and start another game than for the joy of just playing it. This applies to games that I've loved and have great memories of: Radiata Stories, Xenogears, Xenosaga series, Kingdom Hearts series and Mana Khemia just to name a few. While I loved playing these games, at some point in the game I was just like, "okay, I'm ready to end this and move on." I don't know why, maybe it's because I'm older (28 years) or what, but very few games catch and hold my attention like they used to.
That's why I consider any game to be "Epic" when, no matter how long I've been playing it, I don't want it to end. You know that feeling when you realize you've already played more of the game than you've got left to play and you're kind of sad because you know soon you'll be leaving this world (that particular game's world) so-to-speak. In my life since really playing RPGs since I was 14, there have been only a few games that I was actually upset when I knew they were over: Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Steambot Chronicles and Tales of the Abyss. (In the case of Steambot Chronicles, I may have this feeling because it was so short more than it was that great of a game; regardless, I didn't want it to end.)
Persona 4 now lands in this category for me. Even by the end of Persona 3, which I also enjoyed and it's in my top 6 favorite RPGs (of which I've beaten 50+), I was ready just to get it over with as Tartarus was getting old. I never grew tired of P4 and with every passing month in the game I was literally getting depressed because I knew it was a month closer to ending.
Granted, this game isn't perfect and there are some things I wish were done differently, but when I feel like I'm actually "leaving" the town and my comrades as the MC did, I know a game has done what it intended to do- make you feel like you're the main character and you're actually there in that world. I'll probably have another thread about the actual game play and story, etc. but I just had to give this game its props as I really, really enjoyed it and hate that this experience is over.
