FES would probably be more easier to find also, that the original P3. I personally like P4 better, but you really can't go wrong with either one.
You know, I've debated which game I like better since I first completed 4, and I have yet to come up with a solid answer. For all their similarities, the two games are quite different in many aspects. In the end, I love both titles for different reasons.
P3 was a lengthy, dark, and epic endeavor of world ending proportion. You made friends, you lost friends, you held the fate of the world in your hand, and challenged the impossible. It takes what you expect from an RPG and adds a host of new spins on top. It was like nothing else I've played before.
P4, however, was smaller in scale. Rather than looking at the big picture, it sat down and dove into the depths of each and every character, while spiraling through an ever expanding mystery. Rather than intensifying the classic RPG, it created an entirely new experience. It had you thinking about the facts, rather than watching them unfold, and never have I played a game with such well portrayed characters.
In the end, I simply have to class them separate, rather than compare them.
As for which P3, the only reason to buy the original over FES is for the soundtrack and artbook, which you probably won't be able to get without forking over a large sum at this point. FES was a notably improved version of P3, and would also be easier to come by.

I personally prefer Persona 4 to the 3 (Although the 3rd is very awesome) but there are some things that I miss in the fourth, such as combined powers of two Personas (Armageddon anyone?)
In P3, there were some characters that I could not stand *coughYukaricough* but I like all of them in P4. And, well, I can't deny that I think Kanji is a huge step in the good direction, regarding acknowledging the fact that not all gamers are straight males. [ I mean, come on... ]
So yes. As for whether P3 or P3FES... Well, it all depends on your budget and priorities. I personally am a collector (as aforementioned in the other thread ;)) so I own both, because the collector edition of P3 was just very nice, the box and all is rather neat, and P3FES is just very ordinary. However, if you're getting just one and don't care much to pay for twice the same game, well go with P3FES as it has the original game + the expended one.

Sine for now I only own P4 and DS:RK VS SA, and am planning to get DS2, I think I could start being a collector for it...Although Im mainly concentrating on my Death Note Collection (To which the second movie will come out in around 10 days in english, although I already own it in Japanese) and have a huge collection for that >.>...Would post a pic but I dont think I can since it has nothing to do with Atlus.
Anywho, but yeah other than DN, I think I WILL start collecting SMT...But since I just started, I wanna start getting a few first and when I get the chance be able to get the rest ^w^

Well then if you can find P3 for a reasonable price and can afford to buy it and P3FES, I recommend both~

I suggest getting P3/P3 FES first. P3 FES might become sold out by the middle of the year.
If you're looking for the artbook, soundtrack, and slipcase for P3 FES too, then I suggest Amazon.com's Persona 3 FES bundle (http://www.amazon.com/Persona-FES-Soundtrack-Artbook-Playstation-2/dp/B001G0MG8W/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1233367491&sr=8-1).

That Amazon bundle is very tempting. I might pick it up now and play it after I finish my 2nd run-through of P4 and play through Disgaea. Would P3's story still be fun and interesting if I know part of what happens in the end?

P3 and P4 have to do with different themes.
P3 is more about solving the mystery of the past, and dealing with the obstacles of that past emerging in a way that is overt, mainly due the MC being an orphan.
P4 is more about solving the mystery of who is the culprit, what is their motive, and the obstacle of preventing them from from commiting anymore murders.
Neither is a mystery, per se. the (and the whole SMT Persona brand) fall into the category of Sci-Fi horror - with heavy metaphysical content.
That being said, if you are looking for a good one to start with - I recommend 2 eternal punishment. It plays different - but it overtly reveals the struggle in the world of the powers of light and dark and its origins and perameters in a way that enriches both 3 and 4. Innocent Sin is the Japanese only part of Persona 2 - but it is not something I have played, and will let those who have played it recommend why it might be good.

I like P4 better than P3, but P3 was really interesting.
If you intend to play both, I'd start with P3 and then go to P4, because things about the gameplay that were improved on in P4 might annoy you more if you go backwards.
If you're only intending to play one...idk. Play both anyway?

Play or get Persona 3 FES you'll be rewarded with additional content and an additional chapter the "answer". I recommend you play P3 FES before Persona 4 coz you'll end up not liking p3 if you start p4 first. ^^

I'm talking about the Amazon bundle that was linked by the post above mine. The bundle includes Persona 3 FES, the art book, and the OST CD for $30. Still, I'm not sure if I want to get it after finishing Persona 4. It seems like everyone recommends playing FES first.

I actually managed to get that Amazon bundle for 22 bucks including taxes and for a while it bounced around 20-27 bucks in price. I have the CE of the original P3 and this is just about the same except is the FES version included but all the bonuses are the same.
As far as the main discussion, having played through a large part of both P3 and P4. I'm actually liking P4 a little more, I just like the cast a little better and the game in general more refined, considering all the improvements that they implemented over P3. Both games are amazing though and they have to both be in my top 10 all time favs on any playstation platform.
