IRVINE, CALIFORNIA — JANUARY 27, 2009 — Atlus U.S.A., Inc. today announced that Shin Megami Tensei®: Devil Summoner 2™: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon, a new chapter in the stunningly original action RPG series for PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, is making its way to North America on May 12th. Improved over its predecessor in every way, Devil Summoner 2 is an action RPG breath of fresh air, with a deep, easy-to-control combat system, nearly two hundred demons to negotiate with, collect, and fuse, and a variety of strategies to employ and master. Experience a 1920’s Tokyo bustling with cases to solve, criminals to bring to justice, and the threat of the mysterious King Abaddon looming on the horizon.
For a limited time, and out of an exceptionally small fixed number of units, North American gamers will have even more reason to pick up the game that raced to the top of the Japanese game sales charts upon its release. Each and every launch copy of Devil Summoner 2 will feature a rare Raiho plushie doll (not available for sale separately). Only a small amount of these rare bundles will be assembled, and each package will be numbered to ensure its rarity and collectible value. Should there be future print runs of the game, they will ship without the Raiho collectible. Act before they're gone!
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon is scheduled to negotiate its way into retailers on May 12, 2009 with an MSRP of $39.99. Each and every copy of the game’s limited quantity launch will ship with a rare Raiho collectible plushie.

About Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha versus King Abaddon:
A new threat to Japan's Capital calls for the return of its case-solving, tube-slinging Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha the 14th. When a woman walks into the Narumi Detective Agency and asks to find a man, Raidou's boss is reluctant to accept, but soon it's clear there's more to the case than it seems on the surface. It isn't long before Raidou is on the trail of crooked gamblers, masked ninja, and strange insects... a trail leading him inexorably to the mysterious King Abaddon.
Key Features
• Massively upgraded battle system— Advancements to the battle mechanics include a MAG balancing system, dodge and hide abilities, and the ability to command two demons in combat. Use the retooled Weapon Alchemy system to create new swords with unique special attacks.
• Deeper demon integration— Demon negotiation returns with more than twice the number of demons to attempt to recruit to your side. Create more powerful demons through fusion and skill transfer. Control two demons in battle and choose from more tactical options.
• Phenomenal creative team— The rich environment of this Taisho-era Japan comes to life with the character designs of Kazuma Kaneko and the musical score of Shoji Meguro.
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha versus King Abaddon has not yet been rated by the ESRB.

I am glad that this was finally announced, but can you release an adult version of the game that doesn't come with a doll. It seems like a waste to just trash it.

Well....If you live in the US, you could find out some more places on gamestop.com new/used and if any are in your area. Gamestop will also ship the game from other stores to one near you if needed. However, if I were to do this...I'd DO IT FAST.

But honestly, what is their definition of 'extremely limited'? Far as we know, it could be a PR ploy. However, since Devil Summoner 1 has a quite a few places with the first one new online, it's possible the first one didn't sell as much as thought, so this time they'll sell more in line to what they got with the first one?
From what I've read, this one fixes a lot of issues I have with the first one, my biggest gripe being the static camera issue in battles, I can't tell you how many times I had to use the enemies shadow on the ground for reference to how close I am, or even that my allies were so "big" that I couldn't see where I was when they were blocking my view.

Anybody else notice they're calling this Devil Summoner 2? ...2? :bs: More like the fourth. So, does this pretty much put the nail in the coffin for Raidou's predecessors? No remakes, no nothing? That's it? No hope? Well, hopefully we get a fan translation patch somewhere down the line. But still, sad to see Devil Summoner will be taking the route of the Final Fantasy naming convention. Here's to twenty more years of confusion. ;)
Really, if I were in charge of marketing, I would have dropped the "2" altogether: Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha Vs. King Abaddon. You never know what the future may hold. Still holding out for the PSP Devil Summoner port. Maybe if this one sells well, they will allow Atlus to release it. After all, the umpteenth port of Final Fantasy hits the green, but, when it comes to DS, there's not enough material to be considered new? Please, just ignore them and release it already. Besides, future releases could mess up the naming convention. Hence why we now have to interchange Final Fantasy II (SNES) with FFIV, and Final Fantasy III (SNES) with FFVI. Please don't make the same mistake Atlus. :frown:
Regardless, wouldn't adding the 2 now just alienate the audience, marketing wise. I know, I know, P4... but you have to realize most people have never heard of the Persona series before, and, on top of that, Persona has already had it's fair share of releases; no matter how small the brand may be. However, with Devil Summoner, adding the 2 would imply to the audience that the first had come out not long ago, and when they can't find this first installment what do you think will happen to the sales of DS2. DS2 is no Kingdom Hearts 2 by any means. Kingdom Hearts can pull it off because the first remains in a state of availability. The Soulless Army on the other hand does not. Who would want to jump in on the second chapter of a series? Not a good idea. Drop the "2". Heh, wait 'til they find out this is actually the fourth, and the first two were never released here. Plus, didn't Nocturne take that turn just for this reason.
Though, don't take this the wrong way. I'm still incredibly thankful and super excited DS2 is even being released Stateside. Thanks again for your awesome support Atlus. :D

Are your gamestop employees trustworthy? Personally I can see mine "taking" bonuses out of things and claiming they never got it.
You people arguing about numbering are being ridiculous. The first two Devil Summoners have nothing to do with the second two at all except in name, so it's pointless to number them as though they're sequels. Besides, the "Devil Summoner" moniker seems to be more an indication of the method of demon control rather than a series name (just like Persona and Avatar Tuner/Digital Devil Saga.)

Sure, but it leads to confusion is all, and, while it has been a while since I have had my last major headache, why chance it now. Besides, I was merely posing a question in regards to their marketing practice. I'm not beating myself up about it, and don't see anyone else doing so either. There is nothing wrong with the way they have decided to localize the game. I was just stating that it would be nice to avoid confusion in the first place. Dropping the "2" in my mind would satisfy both the marketing side and the fanbase. We can all have different opinions. It's what makes this world so great in the first place.

^I wouldn't doubt if I have been the most vocal (annoying) person on these boards when it comes to older SMT titles over the past several years, at least on a consistent basis.
Devil Summoner and Soul Hackers are probably the two titles I most desire to be localized out of just about anything out there - past or present. That being said, the numbering convention here doesn't really bother me. It is just like SMT III Maniacs Edition being simplified to SMT Nocturne for the NA market.

Personally I think it's a bad idea to even be following the numbering scheme of another region anyways. This is Atlus U.S.A. forums, not Atlus Japan. So really because of that, in order to avoid confusion things should just be stuck to the US given name.

It's a direct sequel to the first PS2 Devil Summoner game, so in that respect, adding a 2 makes perfect sense.
Just try to think of it as Raidou Kuzunoha 2, and not Devil Summoner 2. :P
And if that gets people to track down the (criminally unappreciated) first game, bonus.

i think people are more inclined to check out a game if it has/is a squeal, because they would think that they (devs) must be doing something right in the first place to even have a sequel.

So how is the "package" going to work exactly? Are the plushie and game going to be put in a box together? Or is the "package" in this context just refering to the deal and not actual box? It looks like a small enough plushie to be smooshed in a box with the game, so it'll be reassuring if it is going to be boxed in.
Will there be non-plushie version of the game at launch or will the first wave be all plushie for sure? Is this going to be a different preorder detail compared to the non-plushie set or will it just be the one Devil Summoner 2 and up to chance if you end up with the plushie one?
Will the Atlus Faithfuls be getting an email when the preorders are available online via the usual retailers or will Atlus Faithfuls be needing to camp out at stores to secure a preorder for this package?
Finally, how limited is this "exceptionally small fixed number of units" going to be?

I normally hate random battles, but I'll give this game a shot after enjoying Persona 4 which is now my favorite RPG. Now I'm interested to see their take on an action RPG. So far, all I've played in that genre are Tales of Symphonia and the Kingdom Hearts series. I hope the random battles don't kill my enjoyment. I guess I'll read a synopsis on the first game to know what's going on.

Also are the amount of copies released going to be determined by how many pr-order the game receives.

I'll probably get it.
So will the plush doll package be available at retailers like Gamestop, or will it be an Amazon only type deal like the P4 social links package?
And I don't think the plush doll is as limited as people think it will be. I guessing somewhere around the neighborhood of 5000...unless it has the quality of a McDonalds happy meal plush.

Well Gamestop is finally working.
By the way, if anyone is interested you can use the coupon code 'SAVER' to save 3 dollars on shipping (making it free shipping). Although it's the value shipping. Personally I'm not in a huge rush so...
Only a small amount of these rare bundles will be assembled, and each package will be numbered to ensure its rarity and collectible value.
I gotta ask Atlus....Will these rare plushies be distributed randomly? Or will all the "lower number" ones be distributed to Amazon since thats where atlus store is at? How is this numbered thing working anyways? A certificate of authenticity? some number on his tag? lol

Gamestop has a pretty crap site in terms of how it works if you ask me. The only good thing it has going for it is the inventory system of local stores and whatnot. In any case, you should be fine now with your ordering.

It's possible. Like I said earlier what is their definition of "extremely limited print". For all we know, they will just take the number of orders they get in from retailers (retailers who have a number of pre-orders already) and go by that, and maybe a couple thousand more copies?
It'd be suicide if you ask me if they only printed like 1,000 copies (Im sure its more than that), even if they got orders in from retailers for....2,000, and refused to make anymore. It could be they just print whatever pre-orders they get, but I doubt that since they specially state "launch copy".
I see it more as PR talk.

Actually....
"ATLUS ANNOUNCES SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI: DEVIL SUMMONER 2: RAIDOU KUZUNOHA vs. KING ABADDON FOR PlayStation®2 COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM; RELEASE TO BE EXTREMELY LIMITED IN QUANTITY; FREE RAIHO PLUSHIE TO BE INCLUDED WITH EACH AND EVERY LAUNCH COPY"
Going by their official statement and assuming they are not gonna lie to us, EVERYONE who preorders will get the Raiho doll since it falls under "each and every launch copy". Now I wouldn't be surprised if they have a cutoff for preorders because of this, but soon ship 2nd prints of the game itself soon after.
So if you get your preorder in, you "shouldn't" have to worry about getting the plushie or not. This is just my 2 cents.

I'll see your quoted text and raise you another
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon is scheduled to negotiate its way into retailers on May 12, 2009 with an MSRP of $39.99. Each and every copy of the game’s limited quantity launch will ship with a rare Raiho collectible plushie.

While I wouldn't rule out that possibility, I don't see it getting out of hand. At least I hope it won't. I, personally was just leaving my Amazon option open because I still have my $5.00 promotional code so it'd save me about $8.00 total compared to my EBGames preorder. I don't really care that much about which number I get.
Still, I think the effect of the added "pressure/excitement" induced by the "rare and numbered item" PR outweighs the nitpickers. In the end, it still means people are tripping over themselves to preorder the game, and thats the whole point of this.

Preordered mine from the local brick-and-mortar Gamestop.
I'm on good terms with about half the employees and haven't been stopping by recently, due to all the online shopping (and I have this bad habit of going into Gamestop and coming out with a game every single time). So, weekly stops by to pay off the preorder will let me make small talk... that and at least half of them won't screw me over. :P
That won't change unless there's some kind of Amazon.com exclusive, but the last time there was anything like that, it was a separate product.

Thats the power of name recognition, (And Atlus, I do very much appreciate them so don't get me wrong, but I will say it) and thats the power of preorder/early adoption bonuses and the related PR. Atlus knows what they're doing.

Yeah but that surpassing the sales of the first Raidou isn't a difficult feat. I think peoples excitment is clouding their judgment.
Thats the power of name recognition, (And Atlus, I do very much appreciate them so don't get me wrong, but I will say it) and thats the power of preorder/early adoption bonuses and the related PR. Atlus knows what they're doing.
This is what I was getting at when I said this:
"Still, I think the effect of the added "pressure/excitement" induced by the "rare and numbered item" PR outweighs the nitpickers. In the end, it still means people are tripping over themselves to preorder the game, and thats the whole point of this."
I also think people also are more aware of the value these games hold after time as well. I recall the Persona 4 Teddie alone was selling anywhere from 35-50 dollars on ebay. The game themselves from what I've observed keep their value much better than most games do. Blockbuster games you can see sell for retail, and then a month or two it's about half-price and continually decreases. Atlus games are usually around 80% of retail value for quite some time.
For me, I'm a collector at heart. I've always been that type of person since i was a kid, now normally I could care less about pre-order items (even though this is a pack-in) and whatnot, but from a collectors standpoint when you have something that is numbered and rare, their value is higher. Reason being is that the number can be used to verify if it's real, and usually the numbers go by when it's produced.
A lower number = Made earlier in production. For others it might not be a big deal at all, heck it might even appear stupid but for some it's a great thing to have, and to be able to tell someone you hold a rare item that will never be produced again.
I'd imagine anyone who is a fan of RPGs can understand the value of "rare" items. ;)

Well Gamestop finally got back to me. Here is the e-mail below.
"Dear Customer,
Thank you for contacting GameStop.com
All free bonus items are advertised as limited in supply and are issued
in a first come first serve basis. Unfortunately we are not able to
guarantee that all customers will receive these free items.
We look forward to your future business with GameStop.

Since many of us have pre-ordered soon after it went live on the site, I believe we should be getting one.

Well it adds up. They cover themselves by expliciting stating: "while supplies last". The way I'd think it likely works is each participating retailer gets a subset of the bonuses to go through until they run out. So even though Amazon still lagging behind, I doubt Gamestop/EBGames has the ability to preorder them all away. Please correct me if i'm wrong, Atlus, its just speculation on my part. At least as of this typing, Amazon isn't explicitly advertising the plushie bonus with the preorder.
The only question is what you "Pibbman" brought up before. Are the plushies distributed randomly or are they ordered subsets? That be interesting to know but I, personally won't make a fuss over it. I'll just be happy to get one.

knowing gamestop, first-come-first-serve means 'first one to come to the store and claim their pre-order gets the bonus item', not necessarily 'first one to pre-order'.

If you order from the store that may be the case, but I wouldn't exactly attribute that to gamestop.com which is why I e-mailed them. I figured they were gonna say something like that, but it's to be sure. I ordered from them because they got theirs up first, and I was getting sick of waiting for Amazon, since someone is asleep at the desk over there.

No mention of Raiho, though. Amazon.ca managed to get the Art Books for the December releases, even though they were never listed. Hopefully the Raiho's will be more or less evenly spread to the various chains who take preorders.

What the...how long has that been up? I've been refreshing Atlus's pre-order page every hour since it was announced. Well in any case, I put in an order at gamestop and amazon. So I guess I'll be getting two copies....lol. I'm making damn sure I get that plushie.
I noticed in the product description on Amazon, it says 80 hours of classic dungeon crawling. Now, I'm currently playing through Devil Summoner and just starting episode 8, from what I know there is 12 episodes and so far I put in 15 hours, so I'm assuming the game is like 20-25 hours long. So Devil Summoner 2 is WAY longer than the first?
Not that I'm complaining...

Alright!
I preordered mine today at the Gamestop website, and had it shipped to store so I won't have to pay shipping. The employees at my local GS have always seemed really nice and trustable, and since the city's so small, I doubt there'll be a high demand for the game. :) So, I expect to get the plush. Especially since it's not a preorder item...
Now to get the first Devil Summoner....

Should there be future print runs of the game, they will ship without the Raiho collectible.I don't think there's too much to worry about. I think that the fact they slipped in "should" instead of "when" might hint slightly toward higher launch copies..? Maybe I'm looking into it too much.
higher launch copies? don't understand what you mean by that.
As in more. Launch copies, that is.

Maybe because we KNOW the game is coming now, but since the plushie is rare, we're worried about that now. Atlus is one of those companies that when they say say "extremely limited quanities", "Rare", etc they mean it. So really it's a get it, miss out on it, or pay an arm and a leg for it on ebay.

I already own the Nocturne with Dante in it

Why don't you just buy Nocturne now? It's about as different from the new version as the multiple handheld Pokemon games are to each other--not very.
I can't speak for him, but my main concern is that if Atlus *does* bring over the Raidou version, I'll have to buy it *again*. I'm holding off on tracking down Nocturne entirely to see what Atlus does.

That's interesting to see how many people would buy the same game again, when the only real difference is a character being replaced, and that character still has the same functions. I guess there is also the whole additional dungeon and sixth ending too.

While I loved story and the whole detective solving aspects, I really didn't like the first one because the game play was too repetitive and got boring after awhile. Now I hear that monster negotiations is back which is something I loved in the first two Personas games (the current card shuffle systems blows chunks) and if other things are improved I might consider giving the sequel another chance.
As for as extras go, I like them but could care less if they are offered or not as rarely do I do any thing with them and most of them are practically worthless. Any one remember that pea sized harmonia supplied with Steambot Chronicles? Or how about that compass that came with Grandia 3 (where North was where ever you pointed the damn thing)? Okay I know the latter was square-enix but anyway most of them I maybe look at or use once or twice then pack them away, never to be used again.

Worthless? I disagree, did you know the Teddie from the P4 pack sells around 50 dollars alone on ebay? If you don't want them, you might as well just sell them and get the money back you paid for the game or whatever.

Don't listen to him, free extra goodies are nice to have.
I'd rather have that then bonus DLC that was suppose to come with the game in the first place.

If you're talking about physical freebies, then I agree with you wholeheartedly. I find bonuses such as DLC/Costumes/Map to be utterly worthless to me, and most of the time they show up for download later on anyways.

Certainly day one.
I wonder if the Plushi will go to GameStop stores or if it is exclusive through Amazon only. :: ponders::
Edit: It does!
http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?sku=282017
It will come with every first run copy of the game. If you buy the game from Amazon or anywhere else, you will get the plush.
I figured as much. I just wanted to make sure GameStop was doing the promo. Thanks for verifying for me. I appreciate it a lot. =3

I've been meaning to start the first Devil Summoner game for a while now but I've been busy with other things. My 2nd cycle of P4 is also on hold. Hopefully I'll get DS1 finished before this comes out.

^I'll assume you are being sarcastic, but over the last year or so, I have noticed a trend of people that seemed to be more concerned about preorder bonuses than with the games themselves.
Well, in my own case, I had figured a long time ago we'd be getting this game, so the announcement of the game wasn't too big a surprise. However, I didn't think we'd actually get the Raiho plush, so that IS a surprise and feels more exciting.
Also, we already know the game is going to be good and we already know that the translation is going to be good, so there isn't much to talk about ATM. The Raiho plush is somethign different, so it's getting more attention at the moment.
As for noticing it for some time, this probably has to do with the gact that Atlus gives us -real- pre-order bonuses in a time when giving out DLC is considered a bonus. And beyond that, they actually put effort and care into their bonuses; we got a -full- soundtrack for Yggdra Union, large and stylish artbooks, and all sorts of actually impressive goodies. It's hard not to get as excited about them as you are for the game itself.

My thoughts exactly. Plus I like to think that our pestering both on Atlus forums and elsewhere pushed them to make the decision, so this is a small victory (and proof that they listen to their fans). I imagine the S.Link pack did well, too.
WHAT "WE" WANT NOW:
BRANDISH PSP
DEATH SMILES 360 + any good SHMUP

I never played the first game, and I'm not sure if I will. Still, I am thinking of getting this one. I find that a lot of the times it's not that hard to kinda sorta understand what happened in the prequals. If anything, I'll try finding out about the story online. I'm not all that excited about the plushy, but that may just be because I have no idea who the plushy character is. I don't think I'll order it this early, but I'm sure I'll preorder it a bit before it comes out.

Since the sequel promises to fix a lot of things from the first PS2 game, you might as well just wait for it.

I'm wondering about this too. :) That was such a cool cover idea! They just have to use it again!
Also, I think Nocturne would be a cool addition, yet at the same time, I could care less about it.

yup, he sure did.
I just ordered a copy of the Raidou vs Souless Army through a local game store, and luckily for me they're getting an unopened copy in. I'll have to play through it before Devil Summoner 2 comes out.
I'm a sucker for extra goodies, especially plushies. I would buy Devil Summoner 2 whether or not I'm able to play through the earlier game first.

No foil this time around. They said they felt the first one look like crap, even though a few people disagree with them.

Fellow Gamestop employees, go to your GoStores page and check out the little article they wrote about SMT:DS2:RKvKA (well, mostly the plush). Sure they call Raihou "Raihu", but the fact they tried to expose this to Gamestop employees in any way is pretty cool.
If anyone wants me to type up the whole article (it's a tiny bit clever in some spots), let me know.

Sure there are always exceptions but lets be honest, most extras aren't going to command those prices. Of course though with the limited edition of this game, I guess it would be safe to assume that the doll will probably be commanding prices possibly more than what the plush teddy is currently going for on Ebay.
I guess I need to retract part of what I said earlier though as the art books and music CDs that have been bundled with these games lately are pretty cool. I'm probably more tired of extras like key chains, stickers, compasses, 3D cards, etc. Stuff that looks cool in advertising but then ain't so great when you actually get them.

Of course those are the big wigs stuff. They think their fans are fine with digital costumes, and other crap thats worth around 10 cents. I've always been jealous of our japanese counterparts when they got goodies with their stuff. We're still not on the same level as their extras though.
For example, this is the retail product of Ni no kuni: The Another World by Level 5, and this is just a normal edition, and they don't have a collectors edition.

No scanner handy, so I'll type up the Gamestop thingy:
Let us say right up front that we neither condone nor condemn the summoning of demons, but if you're going to play a game like Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon, you'll have to do some summoning if you want to win. We also neither condone nor condemn really long game titles, but let's just call it "the game" from here on out. Besides, we believe that in Japanese culture, demons are viewed a little differently than in Western culture. In fact, we think the English translation of Shin Megami Tensei is something like, "We view demons a little differently than in Western culture." But we could be wrong about that. We do, however, know how you can summon up a mutually non-threatening plushie devil of your own. While supplies last, first-launch editions of "the game" will come with a free Raihu plushie. When we first saw him, we weren't sure if he was going to bite us or deliver a telegram. Then after seeing his sideburns and tiny cape, we thought he might break into Elvis' (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear. But fans of "the game" will know him as Raihu, the Jack Frost who wanted to be like Raidou Kuzunoha, but then decided he was much cooler. You'll be much cooler with a plushie Raihu by your side.

Right
Wrong. The new game's story doesn't have anything to do with the first one. Some characters reappear, but there's nothing about them revealed in the first game that you need to know for their roles in this one to make sense.
There's a bonus for having save data from the first game, and a couple in-jokes you'll miss out on, but that's it.

So we're not getting nocturne with this one? :( I was hoping I'd finally get to play that one as well. ah well...
Agreed, it would be really nice to get that special edition of Nocturne with this game. I already own the original Nocturne from day one, but Raidou looks like he could probably be better than Dante.
