View Full Version : Opinion of an Action-RPG hater.

I recently got this game, and I'll come straight out for those who haven't seen my "Turn-based vs Action RPG" thread in general discussion forum, I'm not really a big fan of Action-RPGs period.

So suffice to say, I was pretty leery about Devil Summoner, as I picked it up because of the much rumored release of it's sequel. For me, I generally found Action-RPGs to be more of a hack and slash with an "item/EXP" system tacked on, and frankly I still do.

Anyways, once I started Devil Summoner I felt like I was quickly beginning to regret my purchase, for it felt like I had even less control than I was expecting. It's kind of hard to explain what I mean by that. However, from past experiences I knew that I shouldn't judge so quickly, so I kept pushing forward.

What caught my attention was the "weakness" and "confinement" system, at first I thought the weakness system was rather tedious, but then discovered it greatly helps me in battle. So yeah, alright I can live with that. Confinement soon came afterwards, and noticed that weakness must be struck first to even confine. Alright cool. I still felt like it wasn't enough.

Now, enter the investigative side of the game, where you can command/control your demons to do your biddings. Wow, this system alone makes it better by a lot, then include the addition of a fusion system, a devil chart and the forge system. I could see this was quickly becoming a game that actually had depth to it. Doing things such as reading minds, fusing demons to become stronger, or forging demons to your sword to help resist an element was basically everything I was hoping an Action-RPG would have.

So far I only just completed episode 3, with episode 2 being my least favorite to be honest, since I felt like I was running all over too much, it wasn't exactly the running around itself per-say, but the random encounters was nuts at one point, literally almost every 3rd step I took I was thrown into a fight.

Anyways, it was episode 3 that finally pulled me into the game, I had enough knowledge of the story to capture my lingering interest. I can only expect things to get better from here on.

This makes Devil Summoner the first Action-RPG that I like, since others like Tales of-, Kingdom Hearts (especially kingdom hearts), made me want to go and jump off a cliff since it was so damn mindless to me.

Now, that's not to say that Devil Summoner isn't without it's faults, such as the static camera system in battles made me want to pitch my controller across the room sometimes, I shouldn't have to look at my enemies shadows on the ground to figure out if I'm close enough to strike them. I also felt that only having one ally on the field while the others can have up to 6, was pretty unfair. I also disliked the fact that there is only 2 "true" save points, one being the nameless shrine, and the other in Narumi's detective agency. (keep in mind this all I know of as of the point I am in the game). Personally i'd prefer if each district had one save point.

Anyways, from my reading of Devil Summoner 2 (as in what has been released in NA, or to be released to be more accurate), the issue of the static camera deal has been addressed, and you can have 2 demons on the field along side you. Those two (honestly im ok with the save issue) are the biggest beefs I have with DS1.

I am curious as to others who are fans mainly of turn-based rpgs, if they were in a similar position as I?

Hey Pibman.

I'll be honest, I'm not too big into action RPG's, the only ones that I've ever been able to swallow down were the Kingdom Hearts games, Tales of Symphonia (since I sucked and I was just backup player for someone), and Final Fantasy XII.

To me, I felt rather panicked when starting this game - it was gorgeous in every day, and was in a time period that I naturally absolutely completely adore! Only problem, I get flustered when I need to think on the spot, especially with a system as complex as MegaTen usually has.

Granted, I got the hang of it quickly. I love the fighting system, and have found a few interesting ways to make the battle more personal. I rely on my gun heavily, and I always keep a good assortment of demons handy. I think it's really fun to grind for levels in this, since the battles can be played slow and careful, or "LETS GET 'EM!!!" style, as Yosuke might put it, where you rush in and bash the crap out of things. At first I felt the battle system was really limited, but after a while I found it to be simply a way to keep the game more strict, so you're pretty much able to either control what your demons do, and aid from a distance, or you can play more action-like, and use your sword and guard efficiently.

I think fisually, the game's very impressive. The areas are so pristine in the way they look, and everything seems to be so aesthetically pleasing that it's hard not to want to see what locale you'll go to next. I especially love the Shrine where the Herald of Yatagarasu is. Simply beautiful! Walking around, using different abilities from demons to reach different places, etc, that's all fun for me, and is greatly contributing to this game's overall enjoyment.

I hadn't played it in a few years, so now that I'm actually doing so, I like it even more. This might be my second favourite Shin Megami game alongside Nocturne. :3

I can't wait for the second one!!

Haha, guess we got something in common from what I bolded above. Personally I think if I were ever forced into the military, i'd rather be in a position that involves strategy, like working at a command center. I probably wouldn't be the best for "fighting" and whatnot, but I think i'd be awesome at strategic planning.

Sometimes I've thought what if I went back in time, when swords and bows were the weapons of that time, would I be a master "tactician"? lol.

This game's a lot like other MegaTens, the more I think about it, the more I realize I enjoyed it.

Though I have no problem with action-RPGs, I hadn't really found one that heavily interested me. I tried playing Kingdom Hearts twice, but lost interest both times, even though I couldn't think of anything technically or even aesthetically wrong with the game (I'm hoping that FFvsXIII will keep me interested, since I really would like to play something from the KH development team). Even trying to build a Gummi Borg Cube for ####s and giggles wasn't enough to keep me interested.

I also found Tales uninteresting and am only slightly interested in Star Ocean (i.e. not enough to buy it).

I had a lot of fun with vs. the Soulless Army, though. Sometimes it seemed tedious and annoying (i.e. when demons get confused/charmed), but the story and setting were compelling and the combat was quick-paced and usually fun. Right now, I'm feeling like I want to replay it, just to see what more I can get out of it, since I hadn't taken on the last optional bosses or gotten the most out of my demons... and I wanna refresh on the more subtle story connections. :)

I'll be honest — with 90% of action-RPGs, I cheat. I use an Action Replay or Gameshark or whatever I have for that system. For the most part, an ARPG battle system just doesn't have enough draw for me to put in the effort to get used to and sort of good at. I still love the characters and story, just not the fighting.

How-ev-er. I got myself stuck in a leveling loop with DS1. I haven't even met the girl you get your first mission from and I'm level 17 (I think. It's 16 or 17 —#been a while since I played). Without cheating. That's a lot of battles in an ARPG system. Yet, I'm cool with it.

So, I do agree with you, Pibbman. This one's A-Ok! And I better get back to it soon so I can beat it before DS2 comes out! I just have to stop leveling. . . but if I do that then I can't fuse anything new. . . but I have to move on in the game sometime, right? ^_^;

I like action rpg and i liked this game too.
i think the problem is the laking of new skills for raidou, only 3 combo slash, gun, trust and whirlwind get old quickly. That why i want to play the raidou 2 because they correct those issues.

I am very pleased with the thought and don’t feel like adding anything in it. The truth is that these games just did not motivate any interest purely due to repetitiveness and repetition in the chain of games, and in general, there were very few games build in the nineties where there was no variety in them and this lead to be deficient in of public interest .This was the Dark Ages of RPG (http://www.rpg247.com)s.
