View Full Version : Shin Megami Tensei Tactical RPG?

I remember that Atlus once published Tactics Ogre. Perhaps Yazmat might be permitted game to hunt within the fields of Atlus so all may feast. Yasumi Matsuno is a great game designer and his work on tactical games is supreme. Regardless of whether or not he is involved, it seems to me that many Megaten titles could be unified in a tactical title or many might have their own. I think it would be a good move to establish one (or even re-establish one).

Now what might be remembered is that many characters from the diverse Megaten titles might not have reconcilable goals. So within the computer game this can serve to create faction definition and may create opposition -- which can make for a fun game.

What should go into such a game? What should be avoided in such a game?

I think it may be a decent time to repost this to serve as a primer for those that do not have much experience with SMT:

See the section about Majin Tensei.

Also this:

Again, please keep in mind that Atlus USA does not develop games, and that I have already answered your query about factions once before in another thread...

I already know Atlus USA does not develop games. I am talking about Atlus itself. If I were referring to Atlus USA, I would use the term Atlus USA. I do not know why this would be inapparent to you, especially when other forum users make reference to Atlus in differentiated ways from Atlus USA.

I do not see why you saw that comment to be necessary. I hope you did not mean it unpleasantly.

^ Way to go, get all snarky with a mod.

^That is fine. My advice for this individual would be that it is helpful to be less vague about things and answer questions that are asked of them. That way, further comments that may be viewed as "rude" can be avoided. This was possibly the third time I have brought up Atlus USA to you -- many people here use 'Atlus' in a manner that is relating solely to the U.S. branch. You could have said you understood their role previously.

I would say the same in regards to your comment about Majin Tensei. I have asked at least several times what experience you had with the SMT franchise. You gave me no real answer except that you were new to it. With that in mind, I assumed you knew nothing about Majin Tensei. Again, I will ask you to be less vague in the future.

Anyway, back to the topic.

As mentioned before, there's a preexisting SRPG series called Majin Tensei, as well as the upcoming Devil Survivor, which will most definitely be localized, seeing how much love Atlus is giving the DS.

Since you mentioned the, er, final optional boss of FFXII, I'll tackle that....

While I'm not experienced with the Tactics Ogre series, I have played Matsuno's FF games and have some experience with Vagrant Story, which is apparently an Ivalice Alliance game. Though he's certainly good at what he does, I question whether his interests (political history, political science, and France) really fit that well with the MegaTen universe.

It's like asking Yoshiyuki Tomino to direct the next MegaTen OVA. Sure, Tomino is single-handedly responsible for the advent of the real robot genre and changed anime forever, but that doesn't mean that he's the best suited for a MegaTen product.

edit - not sure what that comment was supposed to mean...:/ Kakizaki

Are you always in this good of a mood?

I do believe that Matsuno is capable of much more than we have seen, just as any of us are capable of very much. What he did with the FF universe, the creation of Ivalice, was astounding to me. I was in awe. I believe that he would do very well if he were to design a fictional city, its factions and families, its heroes and local monsters of legend, and then layer the results of the Megaten invasion to date upon it. The tactical game could in fact be fascinating, especially if after any tutorial and prologue game, the player can decide which city to fight, what allies to make, what demon lords and demons to parley with, and what to do with these odd Persona users.

Tomino? *sigh* Perhaps Shōji Kawamori too? Anyway, Tomino is creatively capable. He is not limited to one form of creativity. I am not sure he'd be interested, but one should not discount ability in other genre based in success in one (so I was taught by a big hairy oni with super flight powers).

I would like to call for more Majin Tensei for PS2. I'd love to see one for the PC too. However, maybe I should start a new forum topic for that?

I would suggest slowing down a bit.

I haven't had any time to read up on Devil Survivor....that's an SRPG? *cries*

I have so many games lined up to get this year, I'd have to cross off 2 games from my list to get a DS again. I'd like to see a SMT Tactical RPG on PSP though. Poor PSP is barely getting any love, even the poor TRPG genre in general. Then again in my opinion TRPG (or SPRG if you call it that) has always been one of the smallest subgenre in RPGs. Disgaea is awesome, got it on my PSP and PS3, although there is something about Jeanne d'Arc that just blows away Disgaea in my opinion. It's not by any means as deep, but the story is just terrific.

But anyways, I'd like to see a new TRPG/SRPG for either PSP or PS2, especially if it could be under the SMT name. I know there is uh...eternal poison (by another dev) or whatever it's called, but long load times is a huge bane to me.

^I think you should really reinvest in a DS. There are quite a few decent games. ;)

When Valkyrie Profile hits, everyone will have to buy one anyways. That is, of course, if they are sane.

^I've heard it's good but not great (http://www.rpgfan.com/reviews/valkyrieprofile-ds/index.html) (better than RW and FFTA2 but that's not saying much; probably better than some expected though), it's definitely not a good place for anyone to start with Valkyrie Profile. It's basically a SRPG with some VP elements thrown in. The interesting part is how you can basically make it as easy or as hard as you like and that changes the outcome of the story, but you won't get as much out of that if you're not a fan of the series already.

Devil Survivor on the other hand has seen a much more positive reaction, I was a bit surprised. I think it's because it has more traditional turn-based RPG battles, I haven't seen much English impressions yet so I'm not sure but I want to play it ASAP.

I just watched some trailers, and I'll say this. Atlus USA, you localize this game and I'll buy a NDS again. I really like the character designs in it.

By the way, I saw this has a weakness deal and whatnot, I wonder if it's similar to the other games. Man a TRPG with a press turn system would seem pretty awesome to me.

I played a bit of the Japanese version. Looked fine. I think people will like it and I'm sure Atlus US will localize it for sure.
