View Full Version : Ban Items? Yay or Nay?

Ok, the allowance of certain items has unfortunately led to some very long matches between equally skilled players. While some of this is cool, a 4 hour match, is not so cool. This is my first time running an LA2 tourney, so I apologize for the inconvenience.
(Although, Twilight and Merrily can probably make a good claim to world's longest and most epic Luminous Arc 2 throwdown, so be proud of that.)
So, I'm going to ask all remaining participants in Round 3 the tourney (i.e. don't vote if you aren't in the third round yet, I'm not going to alter the rules mid-round.) if it's cool to do a ban on items. You're the ones playing, so I'm trying to make this fun for everyone.
Just reply to this thread with one of the three following:
Ban on all items
Ban on certain items (up for discussion)
Keep it the way it is
I want to make this a nice balance of fun and exciting for everyone hardcore tourney players. I don't want to scare off new mid to low level players in possible future tournaments with talk of how this place is only for the hardcore. So with those objectives in mind, vote, and hopefully we can all get what we want out of this tourney.

I'll yay it too. I've never had the need to use them yet but it is easy to see how battles can be prolonged.
If you want to keep something though, I guess HP and MP-only restoring items, i.e. no elixir.

While I'm not in the third round yet, it looks very much like I am going to be.
Even if it will destroy my current play style, I vote for a ban on all items.

Note that I'm not even in this tournament at all. But I still felt like posting my opinion on items on wi-fi in general, and how certain items can affect a battle.
First of all, items like HolyWing, which gives any character the ability to revive a partymember with full HP, are the main reason a battle with items can take 3-4 hours or more. Even if you somehow manage to kill 3 of your opponents characters in a single turn, even if you take out all of your opponent's healers, then he/she will still be able to get his party back at full strength with those HolyWings. So HolyWings are the most broken items.
Elexirs will not bring dead party-members back. But they will give any party member the ability to fully restores both HP and MP. I like it how this game has no "absolute healer". Pip is fast, but heals less while Luna is slow and heals better. Elexirs, however, will allow any character to use a healing ability that completely outmatches any of Pip's and Luna's healing tecniques. Sure, it's limited and has no AOE. But even so, the ability to completely restore both HP and MP can certainly turn the tides... and prolong battles.
ManaMaterials may not seem all that bad in a level 99 vs level 99 battle. But in a tournament where the max level is 45, they are basically "instant-kill" items. Unlike the two above, they won't prolong battles. But just like the two above can give offensive characters top-level healing, these can give your healers top-level offensive abilities. These even have a small AOE.
I'd say all of the above items can have a far too large effect on a battle to be allowed in a tournamnet. Just a single one of them used once can by itself decide a battle, and the first two will certainly prolong battles by a lot.
Not all items will be as bad as these 3, but if all items are banned, then each character will be limited to its intentional purpose. Pip will stay behind and heal, not rush in there blasting everything in his path with ManaMaterial. And as much as I know we all would love to see Pip go on a rampage, turning anyone who dares stand in his path to dust, it's just... plain wrong. xD
In short, banning all items would seem like to most fair option to me. But if not an all-item ban, then at least HolyWings, Elexirs and ManaMaterials should be banned.
Like I said, I'm not in the tournament. But banning those 3 will make battles more balanced and fair. That is a fact.

ManaMaterials and most of the damaging items are already banned.
Right now the vote comes down to healing items and revive items that need to be banned.

Though im out of the Tourny now, and I view this as too little too late as I probably would have won my matchup; so take this for what it is. But Nay, should keep the rules as in since it's mid tourny.
Though if we do this another time, Id say no items from the get go.

Agreed. We should ban them. A bit more challenging and fair that way, so we can only rely on our lapis and tactics.
But, if they aren't banned, we should be fine with items like HolyFeat, VitaTonic, or the item that heals MP. Of course, one character can only equip two items at a time, so should we limit to one item each character?

I guess because I haven't had my battle yet I don't fully know how they play out. How many characters can you choose in a battle, because, if they're only allowed two items I'm not sure how the battle carries on forever and a day unless the person put a HolyWing on all the characters...
I'd think min-med HP / MP items should be ok allowed. Or just the first 'level' HP/MP items (yes I don't remember the name of the items, sue).

ohk, im in the third round now and i say there should be a ban on all items except restorative. revival items, status stones, and damage dealing items should be out.
EDIT: after careful consideration, i have decided that i vote to ban ALL items.
I'm in the third round aswell and I say like CeruleanDraco~ I accept only from Elixirs to Vitamint ^_^
Yeah, matches are long enough as is. I'm all for giving them the ax.

Yeah, even my match with Mank was too long for me. I would have grown tired of playing if we had been using items. No items sounds like a good idea to me.

Well for my tournament all items are going to be banned anyways, so its good practice to practice without items.

I say nay. No ban should be enforced.
If you want to set up a match or tournament without items or where only a few items are allowed then agree with the person you are playing against. After all you need to exchange friend codes for personal matches. It is unfair to make a ban worldwide just because you are afraid of a longer battle.

WiFi matches already last 2-3 hours, WITH items would be probably more than twice that amount.
We have refined WiFi in our LA2 community so match times will average an hour or less using these rules:
