CLASS OF HEROES™ TO ASSEMBLE ON PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) SYSTEM; PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS ENCOURAGED TO BUY TEXTBOOKS AND SWORDS EARLY
Get saved by the spell this April
http://www.atlus.com/res/classofheroes_boxart_small_stroke.jpg
IRVINE, CALIFORNIA — JANUARY 20, 2009 — Atlus U.S.A., Inc., the publisher with an honorary doctorate in Exploration and Monster Hunting, today announced that it has secured the North American publishing rights for Class of Heroes™ for PSP® system, a dungeon-crawling RPG in the great tradition of first-person adventures like Etrian Odyssey. Class is now in session; today’s lesson? How to explore more than 75 levels of deadly catacombs, slay hundreds of varieties of vile monsters, master the intricate art of alchemy, and uncover over 1300 items, priceless treasures, and rare artifacts. And some arithmetic, at the very end. If there’s time left.
The characters you craft and who you choose to take with you into the dark, dreary depths may be the difference between walking out a hero, clutching prizes and riches beyond imagination, or being carried out a zero, your stiff fist still feebly clutching your sword. Mysterious dungeons await you, first-year. An early demise looms around every dark corner. Don’t forget to finish your homework.
Class of Heroes hits the books April 7, 2009 with an MSRP of $39.99.

About Class of Heroes
Long ago, without reason or explanation, the mysterious labyrinths came to be, and the world was changed forever. In a constant state of flux, they sprawl across the world like a web, connecting towns and villages, mountains, lakes, and deserts. Many adventurers delved into these labyrinths dreaming of riches, and those fortunate enough to return did so with amazing stories and unimaginable treasures. It was only natural that the children of the world began to look upon these heroes with unconditional admiration, eager to follow in their footsteps. And so, academies for adventurers were born.
Particus Academy may not be the first such school, but we certainly endeavor to be the best! Here at Particus, we strive to equip young men and women with the tools they’ll need to become full-fledged adventurers. Bravery, spellcraft, swordplay, 101 ways to avoid dying a horrible death… These and many other lessons and skills await prospective students! We hope your studies here are as enriching and productive as you've dreamed they would be.
Key Features
• Over 500 character possibilities — 10 races, 2 genders, 3 alignments, and 15 majors add up to incredible opportunity to customize your party! Change majors for further customization at higher levels.
• 80 hours of classic dungeon crawling — This is as classic as dungeon crawling gets in an ever-changing 3-D labyrinth containing more than 75 maps full of puzzles, traps, and treasure. Battle hundreds of monster types and uncover over 1300 item types.
• Flexible alchemy system — Offering more than 400 recipes, this system allows you to synthesize new items from random components found in the labyrinths, as well as customize your weapons’ attributes, range, and strength.
Class of Heroes has been rated “T” for Teen with Alcohol Reference, Mild Fantasy Violence, Mild Language, and Mild Suggestive Themes by the ESRB.

I guess this is my kind of game?? I'll take your word for it Atlus, since there is ONLY ONE gameplay screenshot (http://www.atlus.com/classofheroes/images/ss/campuslife_dun_2.jpg) on the entire CoH website!
Also that trailer SUCKS! I'm normally the #1 Atlus Superfan but come on guys. It doesn't show any game footage and the music is atrocious. Really makes you wonder what kind of audience this game is for.
Day one regardless. Dungeon crawlers are instabuy for me. It better be as hard as EO though (or have such an option). And that screenshot reminds me of Arcana for the SNES, so I'm excited. Now bring on Brandish PSP!
At least we're on to something with the comic strips! Thanks for doing these.
EDIT: Here's the far more superior Japanese trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gn1b_ETTI8A), with 2000% more gameplay footage. DAY MF'ing ONE.

This doesn't look like Devil Survivor.
Oh well, I'm still not finished with Etrian Odyssey 2, so I won't say "Day One" until I see some decent gameplay videos. As Jeffx said, the trailer that went along with the e-mail didn't really say anything about the game at all. Although the art is cute, that's a bonus.

Yeah. Then I realized the Atlus Faithful email actually has a lot of in-game screenshots (none of which are on the website). The Japanese trailer uses the same godawful track however. EO set the bar so high for FPRPGs...

Well, that tells me you read Kotaku, since I see Witzbold is not on the members list here. (Different name, maybe?)
Either way, I've been interested in the game since the Japanese release was announced. I thought it looked interesting... and I also though the character designs were really cute, and that's a selling point for me, too. ^^
... Not that I expect cute character designs to mean 'easy'. This would be my second FPDC though... my first was Shining in the Darkness. (Which is really hard, but rewarding. I expect this to be much like that... except a bit more modern. And with a magic school theme.)

For anyone who likes the artist, I hunted down their website. Their name is うし (aka Ushi or Cow)

That was a nightmare, since their name alone is practically unsearchable, haha. Anyways, they did some work for Trickster Online, which is where I recognized their art from. Cute stuff.
Also here's a random bonus, an oekaki board where Japanese players have drawn their characters.

Sigh. I've read some of these same comments, but I'm not sure I would take their meaning the same as you. For instance:
Unless you are a serious hardcore Wizardry series player do not get this game.
I repeat
Unless you are a SERIOUS HARDCORE Wizardry series player DO NOT get this game.
Its such a niche title that most likely 99% of the people who buy it will get pissed off at it.
To me, those are all positives. They don't necessarily mean it is a bad game. Read some of his other comments. He pretty much berates anyone that disagrees with him and assumes they know next to nothing about dungeon crawlers. In fact, that seems to be his only retort. He offers no real info other than it is "REALLY HARD LIKE WIZARDRY. OMG ITS TOO HARD LIKE WIZARDRY." I do agree with him in that I would have rather seen Elminage, but this is still a nice.
Pibbman, you seem like a decent dude, but sometimes (and please don't take this the wrong way) I think you need to just step back and digest things a little more slowly. You kind of jump the gun a little too quickly. Just some friendly advice.

Not sure where that last part has to do with anything here?
The part i'm talking about is what you left out.
This was one of those that fit into the poorly executed category. The only main draw of it was the character design, thats it.
The general reaction from the public here in regards to the game has been not very hot either.
Yes I own the game and yes unless you have an absolute raging hard on for this type of stuff and dont care about a lot of the shortcommings the game has you will feel like you just wasted 40 USD.
I normally dont say ---- like this, but I am warning people in advance because its not a title that really deserves any support. Which is why once again I am warning folks who are "curious" to stay away.
While it's clear he's alerting those who are curious about the type of game it is, you can't ignore it when he says it's "poorly executed" and the only main draw was the character designs.
The guy is a fan of these type of games, and to say that doesn't sound good. Thus why I'm leery. By no means am I trying to imply "OMG AVOID AT ALL COSTS". I'm just saying I'll be standing back and reading reviews on this one first. I'm not the type that will go and buy anything just because it has a certain brand label on it.
I did like Etrian Odyysey quiet a bit, as well as Witzbold, but he was even saying that in comparison to that game, it's execution wasn't done as well.

Er, I'm on the fence with games like this, so we'll see. However, I have to commend Atlus on the title they chose considering the Japanese title translates to something like "Sword and Magic Academy". "Class of Heroes" sounds like more of an exciting game to English-speakers, I think. ^_^

They developed the first 2 Tenchu games and Tenchu 4, the Way of the Samurai series, and the Shinobido series. Recently they made Yuusha no Kuseni Namaikida games with Rideon (http://www.rideon.co.jp/works_f_e.html) and have started publishing games on their own. On the publishing side they've done this game, Ken to mahou to gakuen mono, which was developed by Zerodiv (http://www.zerodiv.jp/) and they're going to publish Rideon's next game Dun←Dam: Dungeons & Dam (http://dundam.jp/) (which I'm hoping Atlus USA will also bring over now).
I wouldn't mind that game either. These guys seem to have quite the awesome artists. I hope the games are good.

Was this ever answered? I would certainly hope so but I'm assuming this is a game in the style of Wizardry or even E.O., so probably not. They even say it features some 75 maps (no clue if this mean 75 levels or 75 dungeons that might have multiple levels to them each).

I really do love what I'm hearing about this game (though I REALLY want to hear a lot more, like equipment, class roles and abilities, etc.) but I do have one odd question complaint: Isn't the fact that male and female ninjas are being considered as two different classes with very little difference between the two kind of a let down? It's more like 14.5 classes.

I can't thank Atlus enough for this. I love EO to death and want a 3rd one and all, but I need something else to seriously step up to destroy me over and over again and eat my parties of lovable lolis. This game will likely be brutal to the extreme with nasty stuff like permadeath, won't it?

My only complaint from what is known about the game so far is jobs don't change the character portrait at all. While yes, there is a second upper-class portrait (I think), but that hardly makes up for that. And here I thought two portraits for each gender of each job in the EO games were bad ...
Ah well, I'll be picking this up, as with Dark Spire, in their respective launch months, regardless. :)

10 races, 2 character portraits per character, and 15 majors...I feel like this is wrong, but wouldn't that be 300 character portraits? That's a more than a little excessive.
On another note, the screenshots section in the site shows some nice gameplay, and I'm loving the comics. Keep it up! ^^

While I wouldn't expect something like that (despite UMDs, hell even carts nowadays, can hold that many portraits), it would be pretty confusing if I were to say, have two or three of the same race and gender character but each with different jobs/majors. But just a simple palette swap would suffice, which was something that I was hoping EO2 would have but didn't. Hell, if Capcom managed to do that in during the 8 bit era, I don't see why something like that couldn't be used more often but on a smaller scale.
On another note, the screenshots section in the site shows some nice gameplay, and I'm loving the comics. Keep it up! ^^
Too bad there aren't really any movies showing actual dungeon crawling, which is what I'm most interested in; not even youtube have any, they only have the promo stuff. *goes to check home page*

True, but I often find that palette swaps for artwork can get pretty ugly (Guilty Gear Dx). But since they have different names, I wouldn't find it too hard to differentiate, if that's the point your getting at. I tend to re-use names that I name characters from other games, so I have my own little group of people. xD

I think I saw a character creation video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAEZWUOXeVk) on Youtube. Otherwise, I think this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gn1b_ETTI8A&feature=related)has some gameplay about halfway in. ^^

True, but I just want to have as few difficulties in differentiating one character to the next. Also, for create-a-character features, I would like to have as many features as reasonably possible to edit, and palette swaps don't sound too unreasonable. :S
But looking at a few screens, like this one:
http://www.atlus.com/classofheroes/images/ss/extracredit_22.jpg
I don't think palette swapping will reduce the confusion very much (especially since front row units are on the left and back row units are on the right. O_o).

Yes, I saw those, but that's nowhere near as much footage as I would like.

Three letters: C F and W.
Don't ask me how and where; it should be easy enough to find.
Any PSP love is greatly encouraged, especially for games like this. Bring it on, I'll be there with an open wallet.

Ahem... I highly doubt I'll be Day 1 on this, but I'm definately getting it sometime. Even though I'm only starting to warm up to dungeon-crawlers, the character-creation system in this one has me so inyrigued it makes up for the possible tedious exploring in tight spaces.

More dungeon crawling portable goodness.
Keep em coming!
Unlike Abyss for the DS, this looks more like a take on the more modern Wizardry games (5-7).

like most of you, :agree: I am excited to see an RPG coming to the PSP. I currently don't own a PSP, but I do plan on buying on and this makes it look more appeasing. ;)

You have no idea how much I agree with you, however I'm still unsure about this game personally, but the PSP needs more Atlus love if you ask me, especially when you compare the PSP to the DS, the DS is getting WAY more love than the PSP is.

Take out the Atlus published-only games (ie stuff they didn't make in-house), that drops the english releases significantly. And as far as I can tell so far for 2009, both DS and PSP have one Atlus-made game each (assuming Persona port-make gets localised, which I don't doubt).
And this is a classic style fp dungeon crawler and I'm always up for more dungeons.

Captain Ahoge, I love that avatar.
Haha, thanks, the F4U Corsair is one of my favorite WWII planes.
To get back on track, I wonder how large your party can be? Knowing me, I'll experiment with a lot of character builds.

Screen shots tell us that you can have parties consisting of up to 6 characters; you can have three on your front row (left side of the screen in battle) and another three on your back row (right side of battle screen). However, the total number of characters you can make overall (active plus sidelined units), there's no info on that yet (at least from the little media I've seen); that number is kinda important to me). :frown:

Although that number doesn't appear on the website, it's not like we're intentionally keeping it a secret, either. You can have 100 registered students at any time.

Got it pre-ordered. Finally I'll have a reason to dust-off my PSP. I hope they throw in a music cd or an art book...or why not both!

Hmm... Mixed feelings on this...
On the one hand, I can appreciate and enjoy a game with a difficulty not unlike a brick to the face... Especially if you can pick it back up after being frustrated with it.
But the art and combat don't really gel with the dungeon's skins to me. Although, I haven't seen much of the actual gameplay. None of the screenshots have any critters that actually -look- dangerous... Even the one I assume is a boss, Gigant Claw...
Nothing can be done about that now... and it may still prove quite fun and engrossing. But I'm not quite as excited about it as I was when I first saw the site. :P

Just saw this and want to make a slight clarification:
This is not a Wizardry-alike game. This is a Wizardry game, the exact content-duplicate of Wizardry XTH2: Unlimited Students for PS2 as a matter of fact. Aside for the reworked graphics and backstory (and the group tactic thing?), everything else down to plot and missions are exactly the same.
I like the XTH series myself though I preferred the grittier graphics of the original (Yeah, the 3D model render for equipped equipments was crap. Didn't miss that part when they took it out from the PSP version.) A word of warning though was that compare to the later Sirtech Wizs or the Busin series, XTH took more to the WizEmpire line of the lineage, and tend to be more repetitive and grindy, and there wouldn't be the EO-series' character point LVup system and hand-on mapping. (EO's more like Wiz6-8 and Busin in that.)
I brought the Japanese version when it was out, and I would probably buy this as well (Well, I brought Elminage and Generation XTH. Even the ultra crappy Wizardry DS), but I'd say that if you have never played the Wiz games or pre-90s RPGs before, you might want to consider if you'll have the patience for it.
BTW: There's little to no voice I think. Hadn't touch it lately so I'm not sure.

This is a single player dungeon crawler where you control up to 6 characters in strictly turn based battle. Why would there be any reason to have coop or competitive ad hoc or even wireless online modes?

will they release it on PSN too?
In my country, PSN games are ridiculously expensive
for Prinny it's about $60 wew...
and not every game can be shipped here...
so if ATLUS can be kind enough to enter this one into PSN, it will be great(and also reduce piracy)

I was pretty skeptical about this game, being that I stopped playing wizardry style games years ago.
However, after reading thorough the 4 blog posts up so far, I must say, this game seems very appealing to me. With this and Demon's Souls coming to PS3 I think I'll have enough hard core gaming to last me a long long time
