So, I first saw this over at GFAQs (http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=945498&topic=47618982). Someone got it on Yosuke. and provided links (http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/5162/moto0042ft1.jpg) to pics (http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/8862/moto0041lx3.jpg) and even a short video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_2JN-qPD5Y&feature=channel_page) of it.
I myself got it a short while later on Kanji when he hit 52.
Happened in the Heaven dungeon, first round, first day of the dungeon.
Anyone got any clues?

Does this happen in your first playthrought or in your second one? Maybe that could explain things a bit. Also what difficulty is that at?

Could this be the Persona 4 version of the Heart item? That was the first thing that came into mind when i saw the video.

1. It's my second playthrough, New Game+.
2. It's Normal difficulty.

You know, I never thought about that. Maybe the party members can give you special items like that? I'll have to level up Yosuke's level a bit more so he can learns all of his moves. Then I'll get back to you on this.

That's the only thing I can think of, because it's exactly like the heart item deal that Persona 3 had. It's possible they made it a much more rare occurrence this time around.
Shame you can't register the persona in the compendium if thats true lol.

I haven't tested the heart item theory... Dunno why not, I'm in Dec, and most days I've just got teammates only available. (Maxed them all, still needed Temp., Moon, and Hanged... so I doubt I'll get them all in one... :( Ah well, Naoto's only available in round two.)
Suppose I'll try spending time with Kanji next time I boot it up.
For the other guy: Maxed S.Links seem to be the main connection. Most folks were reporting it on Yosuke, I got it on Kanji.
Difficulty: Normal
Round: 1
S.Link w/character: Maxed
Level: 52~
MC Level: 60

I wonder if those links were maxed out on a rainy day, sort of like how if you fused a persona on a new moon in Persona 3, your odds of getting a heart item were higher.

Doubtful, as the only links available on rainy days are Hermit and the night job ones.

Okay, I just got Yosuke to level 73. He has learned all of his possible moves. I didn't receive anything at all. The eye is still there.

Perhaps it has to do with how many times you max the social link, and the eye is a marker for that, and may or may not provide hidden advantages in battle, or maybe a "heart-item" at level 99?
-I notice from the video that the "eye" blinks, that may be the same as the heart pulsating in P3.

Thats why he leveled up to learn all the skills, because it was thought it might be a heart item deal like in P3, since he learned all of them and got nothing from it. It would seem that is ruled out.

Perhaps it has to do with Death? I see various cards floating behind the eye. Maybe there is one for each party member and each time you defeat death a card goes away? You get one ultimate weapon for each time you defeat Death soooo...who knows?

There're first squares turning the same direction. One directly behind, and four in each cardinal direction.
And a small burst of squares behind them moving outward and disappearing.
Honestly, the best theory I've seen so far is the heart item thing... But I've not managed to get Kanji an extra timeslot. So, I can't confirm that thought either way.

that would be so sad if that was suppose to be some nod to Naruto or something. Such a bad show. I normally watch anime subbed, but I remember one day I was flipping through the channels on TV, and I saw Naruto on. So I stopped and figured I'd watch a minute or two, but then Naruto screams out "This is for poking me in the butt!", to make the story short, I quickly changed the channel and never looked back.

but no one even knows what triggers this. We need someone at Atlus to chip in on this. I see this on a couple forums, and no one has a frickin clue what it is.

Hmm. Just some observations and whatnot.
After browsing a few different topics (including this one) it seems to me that you can get the eye by maxing out one of your teammates S-links RIGHT BEFORE a new dungeon opens. From the many people who've claimed to have gotten the eye, all of them seemed to have started on the Heaven dungeon, with one having started the Void Quest dungeon. Some had gotten the eye on their first playthrough, others on their second, with all having various levels and statistics, i.e this person beat the Reaper whereas this one had not. However, the constant between all of these cases seems to be that the dungeon had just been opened, and the eye-gaining team member had just gotten their ascended Persona. The most frequent person being Yosuke and Susano-O (probably because Yosuke is (usually) the first person to be maxed, being the first S-link established) and Kanji. For some reason, Kanji and Yosuke are the most frequent victims of the eye.
The other topic I refer to is the one on Gamespot, if you were curious. The one..Wrench, was it? Started.
Hopefully Atlus will reveal the secret behind this (it could just be a random-percent-chance kinda thing, for all we know) unless they want it to remain a mystery. xD

Wouldn't this mean that it is impossible to get an eye on Naoto?

Nope, unless I'm mistaken I don't think you can. (You want to finish it before the dungeon opens right?) I'm following the gamefaqs guide, this is assuming that you can meet at sundays (I never tried myself), and that every rank only needs 1 meeting without spending time (Besides at Rank 9 -> 10 which requires spend time or pray at shrine). I don't know how Magatsu would work since it's in december and the last time you can level fortune up is before or around nov 27... No one would be able to finish their slink right before that since it's impossible

You make a good point there, Azmid.
Hell, for all we know it may just be an instance of random chance. As in, you only have so-and-so chance of getting the eye whenever you max an S-link.
Still, the fact that all three cases of the eye (or, at least, the ones I saw in this topic and in the gamespot topic) were obtained during the beginning of a dungeon doesn't seem very coincidental. Well, they could be in fact coincidental, but since we don't have much to go on anyway, at least we can try and see.
(If anyone was curious, this (http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/rpg/persona4/show_msgs.php?topic_id=m-1-47618982&pid=945498&page=0) is the topic I am referring to. Feel free to check it out yourselves.)

What I'm wondering is if the eye even affects battle performance. Since I'm pretty sure it's not an item bearing deal, its pretty worthless then. However, if it was something that increased your stats by a certain percentage permanently, than it'd be worth I guess.

Anyway, I was thinking it could affect something not easily seen, like critical rate, hit rate, evasion,
(it's an eye after all) exp gain, quality of items used by that party member, more accurately guessing enemy weaknesses, stuff like this.

Okay, update.
I maxed Chie on 11/1 (which was the only Chariot day available), and the Heaven dungeon opened on 11/6. I brought her there, but even when she leveled up (twice at once, in fact) she never got the eye on her Persona's status screen.
I can only conclude that either (a. The eye IS in fact purely randomized or (b. The party member in question must be maxed much closer to the dungeon-opening date.

That could very well be, which may explain why so few cases have cropped up.
Perhaps it was supposed to be like heart-items but was taken out for some reason. What bothers me, however, is that I don't think the JP version ever had instances of this, no? So it's possible that the ENG version, for whatever reason, has a glitch where the eye is accessible by normal means, whatever these means are.

I am rather curious as to what this blinking eye is. However, I have never obtained it. Wrench, how about finishing the game and starting another new cycle, then check the status screen to see if it's still there or not?
Originally, I thought it was the heart-item of P3 but this doesn't seem to be the case. Until I get my very own blinking eye on one of the characters' status screen, I won't be able to figure it out.

It appeared to me when I mastered the Yosuke Social Link in my FIRST gametrough. But I saw that some of you guys said that:"what would happen if you start a new game and see the Yosuke social link to see if the Eye is still there?"That is impossible,'cause when you finish the game and start another one,ALL the SL come to the beggining.
Oh,now that I metion it,one question:I beat the game with 4 max relationships, and when I start again,I had the objects that the persona gives you when you reach lvl MAX.Remember at the end of the game, when you are saying goodbye to your freinds?Ok,right after this, you walk a few steps and listen to your MAX friends(except your MAX teammates, like Yukiko)and then comes the cinematic and the final titles.
Now comes my question:when you beat the game for SECOND time, having your objects(the ones that give you your MAX Social Links friends),do they appear to say you goodbye if you didn't reach lvl MAX with them in the SECOND time, but you did in the FIRST time?
I know that my questions is a little confusing, here an example:
You beat the game with the soccer Social Link at MAX lvl,he gave you an object representing his friendship,at the end,he say you goodbye before going to the train.
Then you start the game AGAIN,having the object that he gave to you,but obviously, without the Social Link at MAX.Now,you beat the game again,and....he said goodbye to you again at the end of the game, having the object, even if you didn't mastered his Social Link?

So maybe it is a little piece of bull that's just there for laughs, like the Gem on the game lobby of Diablo II, everyone hoped it would do something, and repeatedly mashed it before a game.
Eventually, it was found out that all it did was display a funny little message after you clicked it a few hundred times.
Could we get this eye to display a funny little message for us?

Way too much algorithms, and code to fish through to even consider doing so. Also RPGs tend to have more code than the average action game...

that would be so sad if that was suppose to be some nod to Naruto or something.
It has to mean something if you can only get it on one character. Someone has to get to their third cycle to test this!
but no one even knows what triggers this. We need someone at Atlus to chip in on this. I see this on a couple forums, and no one has a frickin clue what it is.
Maybe its a useless Easter Egg added for laughs...Have you guys thought about that? Many games have things that serve no purpose whatsoever.
Ok pibbman i dont think it would have anything to dowith naruto now lol

You'd be surprised. Ever heard of the dildo on the cover of the Little Mermaid video/movie poster? The floating rubber duckies, and suggestive codec messages that Otacon gives you while standing in front of a poster in MGS2? The Bond Tuxedo in MGS1? The Tofu guy in Resident Evil 2? These are all Easter eggs, that were inside jokes at the development office.
It could have been a inside joke in the developers office, or a feature that they intended to use for something else but scrapped it at the last minute.

I meant, is there a symbol that looks like that, that represents something in mythology, so it was added in both instances for some sort of obscure meaning?
An example is the magatama shape, seen as a chain carried by persona Yatagarasu, also used in that ability Sasuke and Kakashi use in Naruto. (this is the most commonly known reference I could think of, though I don't watch the show except for season 1 and don't mean to imply that it has anything to do with Naruto in particular.
Gen Eric Gui
02-10-2009, 08:46 PM
Well, the reason those symbols/items are used across several stories/comics/games/etc is because they're common mythological items in Japan. It's the same thing with seeing Christianity references all over the place in games; they're actual real-world references.
Which begs the question; what does the symbol mean in the real world, if anything? If it has a meaning, it might be possible to extrapolate information from there.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned if this appears in the Japanese version as well, also nobody mentioned the difficulty level on which it appeared, maybe in the normal version it's useless but it works in the expert mode. I think it's still early to say the eye's just a glitch or an unused feature, there are some things to try.
Hmm... Have someone (who have the eye) got any idea what is it? Maybe like what you've done before that or something... I've never stumbled any of them until now...

I think it's like the ones in the Arcana cards (The tarot), I think it's there (or at least it's a symbol which looked like the eye) in the Emperor and Empress... I guess..?
And don't worry PersonaFan, I don't think anybody will hit you or something... No reason to hide...:)

Sorry it's been a couple of months. Same dude who got the eye on Yosuke. I'm thinking, since it's summer, I've got a bit more time to spend gaming. So I was thinking I'd try to level up Yosuke to 99 and see if anything happens then.
Any tips for a quick level up spot would plenty helpful. I know about the Magatsu Mandala place trick with the Pringle dudes, but I think that's only for a quick level up for the Main Character.

I've been wondering about this as well, truth be told. My first playthrough, I've got it on Yosuke, right after I received his max S.Link. (Rather early in the game, truth be told, because I really like him).
I'm surprised there's no definitive answer on this, however. I'd really like to know the significance of it, too!

:agree: no definite answer on this stuff...
Well, in a game all about searching for truth, maybe it IS just there to make you wonder and search.
So far everyone seems to think you max out a character's s. link a certain way to get it, but maybe that has nothing to do with it.
Maybe it's what you say DURING the s. links, or something you do while just wandering around Inaba.
Figuring out exactly how to trigger it might help figure out what it does.

Wow, this bug is wierd. I agree that it is probably just the heart feature showing up whenever it wants even though it was supposedly deleted; however, its odd.. did the heart feature do that in P3 for cast member's personas? I always thought it was just the ones MC could make.
I played the game twice, both on easy IIRC. I should check out my files and see if anyone has it. I never look at my status screens... my gf is doing a runthrough too so if she does it without cheats then I wonder if she will get the eye...

ok i had a little theory about this blinking eye ball
I did this on my second play through.
I was playing along minding my own buisness [it was before the beginning of 'the game'] I noticed the eye was on kanji so i made a chrono save file near the bottom and reset my game and loaded it back up to before the data i just saved and pulled up my status screen. The eye was on yosuke, it was super weird and i can't explain it.
The eye migrates to different characters, maybe it's random? or just targets specific characters?
Has anyone gotten it on

I've always been kinda interested in this purple eye thing, well, finding out whether it was meant to be there or simply a glitch or left over beta data.
I've never found it on ether of my playthroughs (one, Easy Mode, Yosuke was with me through the whole game. Second, Normal Mode, dropped Yosuke when I got Kanji).
It probably is just a glitch, although I guess nothings proven. c:
Cloud737

It can't be a bug/glitch. The probability of something like a bug/glitch causing a blinking eye to appear with some smoke behind it is one in infinity. It's the same thing like saying a thunderbolt-hit self-piloting plane would turn evil and launch all of it's missiles on humanity.
Bugs and glitches usually have strange, chaotic and undecipherable (i.e.: garbage) visual side effects.
Most probably, it's either some leftover beta code or some teasing done by the Atlus dev team. :P

it could be a glitch or a joke put in by Atlus seeing how a lot of eyes are shown in the opening intro before the main screen that says "press start"
Cloud737
12-08-2009, 12:43 PM
Like I said, glitches and bugs (unintentional side effects and programming errors) don't produce such non-garbage results, unless the code was already there (meaning they planned to implement it) and the glitch somehow activated it.
So, either way, it's still code intentionally done by the devs. The only question is if they forgot to remove it completely and somehow missed an activation condition or if they wanted to tease us with that.
I'm going for the latter. :P

What's highly possible is that since the eye only comes up on a second or higher playthrough, and Death only comes up on a second or higher playthrough, that that character's ultimate weapon will be dropped by Death next time you kill it. That would also explain why only one person at a time has it.
