Hi! Hayken here!

I want to me make this discussion 'cause i havent see any thread about this...

So... its about the Ogre Saga (Ogre Battle, Ogre Battle 64, Tactics Ogre for PSX and GBA). Whats happened? Why didnt the Atlus (or the other producer of the ogre battle, Quest) continue the saga? I think the games of the ogre saga make, surely, a great sucess... so what happened for the producers dont continue this awesome game?

Note: Sorry about the mistakes, cause im brazilian and i dont talk very well english... i know the simple... and ive learn some from MMOs.

I don't know why Quest hasn't continued the Ogre Battle franchise, but if it's permissible to plug a Nippon Ichi game (given that Atlus localized the first Disgaea game for PS2), you might want to check out Soul Nomad and the World Eaters. It's Ogre Battle on crack.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is what happened to the Ogre Battle games. Quest was absorbed into Square-Enix during the merger and the team members that didn't quit or get fired were put on the FFTA team.

No No...

Exists a game named Tactic Ogre for GBA... And ive played FFTA and the history dont match with the history of Ogre Saga... i KNOW the ogre battle history (i guess...) and the FFTA realy dont match.

One example is the aligement system. I think all games of ogre saga have ALI system. FFTA dont have such caracteristic.
Other think is the elements of the characthers. All ogre battle games, each characther have one element and various thinks have relationship with the elements. Like one simple atack. If one guy that have fire as ur element atack other guy that have water element, the guy with water element have a bit more advantage to guard or avoid the atack. And FFTA dont have such a think too...

Anyway... the point is the FFTA IS NOT what happened to Ogre Battle...
Only if I misinterpreted what u have said.

Yeah, I think something was lost in translation :).

What I meant is that all the guys that made the Ogre Series games were either fired, quit, or were reassigned to work on FFTA games. I'm not saying that FFTA games are the continuation of the Ogre Series. I'm saying that because the FFTA games are so popular, the guys behind the Ogre Series have been told to keep making those instead of a new Ogre game.

Ahhh.. i see...

But... have been made, i think, in the same year, a game named Tactics Ogre Advanced - Knight of Lodis(for GBA too). Realy, the interface is very similar of the FFTA. (I guess all rpg "tactics" game have a similar system). Im not doubting of you, but make no sense the guys where fired, they make FFTA and, later(or before), make Tactics Ogre... Maybe the people who wasent fired continue the ogre saga, and now they are fired... is a good explanation...

the guys behind the Ogre Series have been told to keep making those instead of a new Ogre game.

So... maybe a new Ogre game will be available soon?

I think thats a good news... =D

Oh, sorry. I was just recommending a game called "Soul Nomad and the World Eaters" because its battle system was very similar to "Ogre Battle" on the Super NES. It's a PS2 title that came in 2007.

I'd suggest renting it, though. Games made by Nippon Ichi Software tend to have a very strange sense of humor. Personally, I still that Disgaea is what would happen if Mel Brooks were to do a Japanese tactical RPG. If you don't know who Mel Brooks is, then you should watch a movie called "Young Frankenstein". Then watch "Spaceballs" and "The Producers". :)

And since Square-Enix has the rights to the Ogre licence, you know there won't be another game anytime soon:(

^What he said.

Square-Enix outright bought Quest (a little after Knight of Lodis was released I think) and along with the rights of the Ogre Battle series years ago.

Agreed, Soul Nomad is pretty much Ogre Battle without all the lame parts meeting Disgaea. That said, how about a Ogre Battle compilation, Atlus?

Rights are potentially transferable if you, you know, "ask" and "pay money". Could be S-E would be willing to play ball if asked - you never know.

Not a new game, but a step in the right direction:

http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2009/01/09/super-punch-out-and-rare-ogre-battle-rated-by-esrb/

That copy of Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen you stashed under the mattress to partly fund your early retirement just got a whole lot less valuable. The ESRB has rated the rare Enix RPG for a Virtual Console release, along with another, more widely known SNES gem: Super Punch-Out!!.

Squenix bought them out because they didn't want any competition when they made FFT. A shame, since Ogre Battle 64 was one of my favourite games. It would probably be a system seller for me if it ever made it to the VC. <_<

Arggh...I guess I'll have to buy a Wii now if MotBQ gets on there. I played that game so much on my SNES back in the day, but I never could beat it with proper alignment!

I'd love to see a game in similar style to Ogre Battle made by Atlus though, if we are on the subject. Maybe set in a semi-fantastic universe, ala steampunk.

Ogre battle was beast! I've been wanting to play tactics ogre for like 10 years, but I'm still on a journey to score it for a dollar at a flee market. I'm very reluctant to play OB 64 though, N64 RPG's were uncommon for a good reason.

According to that list is it safe to assume that on a service such as the VC that Atlus still holds publishing rights to those games or do they still have to go through Square-Enix in order to get them out (or vice-versa for that matter)?

To simplify things for TC:

Quest made Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre.

Square hired off Quest's main developer Yasumi Matsuno and possibly other former Quest people to make Final Fantasy Tactics.

The remaining members of Quest made Ogre Battle 64 and Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis.

Square bought Quest, and used many of those developers to make Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.

Anyway, Square owns the Ogre series, so no new games will be created without their permission.

Given that Matsuno and parts of the Quest team helped make FFT and Vagrant Story to start with, I don't think that was the case.

When Quest was acquired by SE, they were set to the task of making FFXII. You might notice how there was all this political drama, stolen kingdoms, royalty fallen from grace, knights seeking redemption and all in FFXII. its the sort of thing I only have seen in Ogre and Fire Emblem franchises, so I'm pretty sure Matsuno at the guys in Quest had a hand in it :P

I don't think its out of the realm of possibility that there will be new installments. SE is trying to branch out and try different things of late, so you never know. They'd have to get Matsuno back to really make it work, though.

Til then, Matsuno's latest work was penning the scenarios to MadWorld. Yep, its true, he's working again.

Ugggg....Final Fantasy Tactics was an Epic game and FFTA and FFT:A2 were ok games but I really wish they would get rid of the "kiddy" feel the advance ones have. They pale in comparison to the gripping plot of the original.

Oh and as far as a new Ogre Battle/Tactics Ogre (Prefer Tactics myself) its not likely that they will let Atlus or anyone make one SE is very protective of their franchises even if they dont use them anymore.

That said SE has already revived alot of older series...alot of which they did because of sales of a VC title so everyone who owns a Wii buy, buy, buy March of the Black queen.

I can live without the name, but their failure to make any decent tactical RPGs since them is rather disturbing.
