View Full Version : ATTN: Minor game bug for PS3 users (For those planning to play P4 on a PS3)

[Couldn't find any other thread about this here]

I didn't really notice this until now, but the bottom left of the dungeon interface (The long black rectangle) is blank if you play it on a PS3 (Tested on 80gb models; software emulation). Other users on gamefaqs are experiencing this as well both on HDTV and SDTV, upscaled and not upscaled.

This blanks out where the Floor # should be displayed at if you are going through a dungeon. (And whatever else is displayed there).

http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

The game (Persona 4) is not listed yet on Backwards Compatibility as well, so Sony is probably not aware of this minor bug; assuming they are still fixing games, it's up to Atlus to work with them to fix it.

Edit: Doesn't seem to affect PS3's with hardware emulation; only software emulation?

Really? I have a Launch 60GB PS3 (fully backward compatible) and I can see the floor where I'm at, is below the map. Maybe it's only in the half fully emulator PS3 SKUs like the 80GB and the 40GB?

Really? How strange. I tested it on my friend's 60gb which I'm sure used hardware emulation and it had the blank on it. (Unless he downgraded his 80gb software emu model's HDD to 60gb?) You could be right though, going to check with him later.

But I'm positive it doesn't display on the 80gb MGS4 bundle model (Using one with the game myself) which uses software emulation.

Edit: Seems you might be right. I asked him, and my friend just switched his laptop and PS3's hard drive, so he did have an older one that had hardware BC. Editing opening post.

I'm playing on the 80G (MGS4 bundle), and one other minor issue is that sometimes a save-file won't load the first time around (corrupt data); this is easily remedied by exiting anre-entering the load file screen.

I noticed this the first day I was playing P4 on my 80gb so I switched to my PS2. :)

I've had the same problem with my 80gig.

The file corrupted thing happens in a few games. It's not really corrupted. It just has trouble reading it sometimes. Just exit the screen, and go back in a few times, and it'll magically be uncorrupted.

I just created this account on these forums so I could post this. However, the forum won't let me create threads for some reason......???

Anyway, this thread is relevant to my plight. So here it goes.

My PS3 just ate my P4 save data.

I was just playing the game. I was 15 hours into it, and I was at the second dungeon, the bath house. I was level 20, and had gone back to Yukiko's castle to defeat the optional boss. During the fight he wiped my party and I didn't feel like taking him on with my protagonist alone. So I hit the PS button, and chose reset game.

Something I've done several times on P4 and dozens and dozens of times on P3 and P3 FES.

So the game reloads, I go to load my data and it's gone. I turn off the PS3 and go to load my data...it's gone.

I go to the PS3 XMB and search through the virtual memory cards. The data isn't there.

So now I have to restart this game, and there is no guarantee that this won't happen again.

It really sucks, and I think I am handling it really well. But it SUCKS ASS that this had to happen. When it happens again, I'm probably going to kill myself. But yeah...

I'll create a thread about this if the forum ever figures out that I already activated this account.

Nice to meet you by the way.

Add me to the list of those with no blank spot problems. I'm on a 60gb though.

I've seen the fake "corrupt data" once. Backed out, opened the load file menu again and it worked fine. I've also seen it fail to save a couple times, which is solved by the same process of trying again.

Also, a recommendation: Backup. The PS3 isn't a PS2, and I honestly don't trust it as much as the old memory cards. It seems buggy at times(Fortunately no disk read errors thus far), and one thing that is very quick and easy to do is make a backup memory card. Never put it in a slot, just leave it there and name it something like "PS2_Backup." Copy your data onto it every so often, and if something corrupts, simply copy from the backup, to the card you're using. I've yet to have any real corruptions, but a few games(Odin Sphere specifically) have been buggy, and caused me to worry. So for the games I don't want to lose, I just back them up to be safe. Since you never put it in a slot and access it for anything other than copying, it should be safer from corruption problems.

Honestly, I wish the memory card copying device worked both ways, so you could backup files onto an actual memory card instead of a virtual one.

double save guys, just incase. i didnt get data corrupted but i couldnt copy the original file i had, so what i did was create a new PS2 memory card on my PS3, i loaded the P4 file that wouldnt copy, reassigned the card slots and saved in the new card. Problem gone. However if your data spontaneously dies, sorry i dont know how to help, just save twice in 2 different slots to be safe.

I exited, reloaded, restarted, turned off etc. It wouldn't copy or load. Everything was displayed as 0 (plvl, play time etc.) and it set to the first day on beginner, I had it on expert. and where it say your location it said reserve. when trying to load it, it said file is corrupted can not load. It was only P4's file that got wrecked all my other games were fine on that memory card.
heh I was also 38 hours into it, lvl 37. Just got teddie and Rise in my party and beat the extra boss in the striptease...... just spent like two hours making personas just before that as well. T-T

Edited opening post. If the posts are consistent, then it seems that 60gb (Hardware emulation backwards compatibility) PS3's aren't affected by the blank info box on the bottom left of the screen, only 80gb (Software emulation) models.

As for disappearing save files, hasn't happened to me, but the only thing I can really suggest is use two internal virtual memory cards on the PS3 (I think pressing PSN button lets you switch them even while the game is running?). If you have a PS2 Memory Card adapter, or a USB Stick, you can back them up through there too. I did that for my older PS2 memory cards and backed them on the PS3 and a USB stick because I'm afraid they might croak up soon even though they are all magic gate cards.

I always back up my stuff just in case.

Yeah.

I know there is nothing that can be done. I am just thankful that I wasn't further in the game.

I'm going to give this game another shot and just back up my data.

For the record, I've got the 80GB PS3 that emulates the PS2 software. It's the MGS4 bundle.

Actually, it's my second PS3 since my first one I bought June 12 2008. The first one bricked after I installed some mods to Unreal Tournament 3. I hope this replacement they sent me doesn't croak my ps2 saves too frequently....

I was backing up my saves for Eternal Poison recently, and it sounds like I should do the same for P4, just in case. I do have an all-new save "card" I created just for P4, but backing up my latest file might not be a bad idea....
