Connection between Izanagi & Orpheus (Minor Spoiler)

During the trip to Gekkoukan High, Dr. Edogawa talks about the story behind Izanagi and his trip to Yomi (or hell) to bring Izanami back. When I was thinking about this, there was this "Ding! :exclaim:" in my head and I realized that its the same story I read in my English class in high school. Except that it was Orpheus who went to Hades to bring Eurydice back from the Underworld.

Whomever wrote the script for P3 and 4 is a genius. This seems like a hidden easter egg if you ask me.

Orpheus was mortal and still went to the farthest depths of hell to get his woman back, but tripped up at the last second because he got too anxious.


Izanagi was a god who went to the farthest depths of hell to get his woman back, then ran away screaming and blocked the cave with a rock because she got ugly.


Izanagi's a dick. Orpheus isn't. But yeah, I always found it strange how they both have similar myths.

Orpheus is found in Greek Mythology

Izanagi is found in Japanese Mythology.

yea i found that very interesting when i heard the myths but why chose ones that lost someone?

hmm thats a good question. I guess its supposed to represent Sacrifice.
P3s Minato lost his parents and became an orphen and eventually gave up his own life to save the world

P4s Soji probably moved around alot due to his parents moving around so he probably left alot of friends behind.

I'm just guessing so take it with a grain of salt.

I also found it interesting that two other Personae(I'll avoid mentioning who for those that haven't reached their rank 10 S-links) are Amaterasu and Sasano'o, who are two of Izanagi's children.

I think there's more to Izanagi than just the "first persona" though. Edogawa always gives information that contributes to the game's storyline(His Tarot card arcana lecture in P3, and now a story which features the protagonists first Persona). Either way, who says you can't learn something in video games? :P

Since Izanagi ran from his women, and this game is mostly about outward appearances then Izanagi seems to be in the right place.

well from what i remember both of them tried to get back the ones they love and both of them failed well not fail Orpheus looked back to see if his wife was behind him and he wasnt to do that and Izanagi saw his wife as bug and such i mean two different things but is that why they picked them for the fact that they both lost something and now they are trying to get something back i mean thats what i think and maybe thats why they have the social links
