I have a VERY limited knowledge of Japanese, but I poked around a baby naming website once for kicks and found the name Rei (which I guess means salute) and Unabara, which supposedly means "ocean," and is the last name I use for all my Megaten/Persona/Devil Summoner characters, for no particular reason except that oceans are... er... vast? Like the possibilities of your moral paths, and... oh whatever. I like the beach.

Rei. From my understanding, Japanese for zero. You know the whole thing Igor says about the number 0.
Shiru. According to my book, means "Know" in Japanese. Also I know from my school Choir that Shiru is also Hebrew for "Sing" which kind of references my P3 character name. (Kaito, named for the Vocaloid)
(I was a little hesitant of putting "Zero" and "Know" right next to eachother, making it seem like zero knowledge ^^;)

Taku. Cutting up "Takusan" which supposedly means "Many".
Hito. Apparently "Person". Not "Persona", but it was the closest I could get.

Forgetting the last minute tacked-on "Rei" and disregarding the missing "san", it means "Know many person". Like I said, I couldn't find "Persona".


Luckily when I went to put it in it just barely fit.
I would've smashed my TV in if I had wasted a half hour only for it not to fit.

Well, for my first playthrough, I just went with my real name. But since I'm an American, it doesn't really seem to fit in with the names in the game. So I think for my second round, I'm going to go with Japanese names that I found on a website. I'm considering Tamotsu = Defender, Protector or Tadashi = Loyal, True. Maybe one as the first name, and the other for the last name. Or I might try to find a different name for the last name.

Tadashi seems to sound better with the honorifics (-San, -chan, -kun, and senpai) though.

Well, I used my name (evan) mainly because persona 3 meant so much more when you have your name and choose decisions you would actually make. Also, it makes the romantic scenes a lot more heartfelt. I love default names, but in a game where you have to pour your soul into a character it just feels wrong being called something else.

I used Peter Thorne for my character. It sort of stemmed out of a character in a short story I wrote a long time ago. The character was "Daniel Thorn" (not sure if there was an 'E' at the end of the last name when I wrote that story). Daniel Thorn was basically a guy who could use magic and dealt with things in his city like werewolves and the like. It's more complicated but you get why I chose that name as the basis - the whole mystical guy in a city thing. Well, Persona 4 isn't in a big city and all, but still. I changed the first name to Peter partly because Daniel is my real first name and partly because I just liked the sound of "Peter Thorne."

I've done a lot of the whole making-up-a-Japanese-name thing so I guess that's why I haven't been going that route when I make up a character name lately.

Heh, I still can't get myself to name the MC something humorous. Maybe on my second play through the game I will this time.

Sasha was for my dog, who unfortunately had started having kidney failure and heart problems around the same time I got the game, and shortly thereafter had seizures until she died. Er... I used my Chinese name? It's in Japan, but Lee Jenrya got away with it in Digimon Tamers (he's part-Chinese like me, so I figured why not).

It's interesting that since the M.C.'s mom is Dojima Ryotaro's older sister, he only refers to her as 'Sis' (or 'Onee', or other variation of 'older sister') as is typical of younger siblings in Japan. And since in Japan the women usually (but not necessarily always) change their surname upon marriage, we have no idea what the M.C.'s mom's name is. Thus, for all we know, she married a foreigner and changed her surname to a foreign one (and got a foreign 'nickname'), allowing the M.C. to have a foreign name and still make some sense within the setting.
If someone else pointed that out earlier on this thread, I'll feel stupid.
