Is it just me or is the level grinding in this game really fun?
I'm in the Steamy Bathhouse right now and I got my ass kicked by Shadow Kanji so I have been running through the Dungeon and have at least grinded 10 levels (I'm at level 27 with all my characters). I don't know what it is but, the combat in this game rocks.
Who else has found themselves grinding for hours on end?
Also, What is a good persona to use against the aforementioned boss?

I agree with you as opposed to other RPGs but this game has a different feel to it when it comes to Level Grinding.

Im getting by with the levels Ive gained just clearing the dungeon as I go. Thats how I like to play a game. I hate grinding for streamline stuff.. its reasonable for optional bosses or final bosses IMO

@persona3rocks: You know what, I'm just gonna be honest and say it. With your spelling, I'm not sure people really read what you say anyway, so go ahead and post spoilers all you want.
Sorry!! Your posts give me headaches. Kaki feel free to mod me.
Anyway, you can select the color of the font when you write.

I type fast too, I'm not sure what your point is. Just read your stuff over before hitting post reply? Also, punctuation is everyone's friend (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2003/7/7/). Blah! Sorry, let's leave it at that.
I can't actually play P4 until next week! But I love grindfests, so I should be in RPG heaven.

 I just died :very_sad:
Can't say I enjoy grinding, even though I've enjoyed the combat system for both P3 and 4 quite a bit. I did have to grind some for that boss though, mostly because I skipped around to reach his floor several levels too early. I used Phoenix and Valkyrie on him, Garula for damage, Media for backup healing after the more dangerous attacks. The real trick is making use of guard, not necessarily the Persona(First battle I kept everyone on Direct Commands for the entirety, just for guard). Managed to beat him at level 23, took a while, but no one died.
As a whole, the game seems to put you at a good level as long as you don't rush past monsters, and take your time getting past each floor. I tend to get antsy because you can't restore SP like in P3, and forget that it marks every floor I reach, so it isn't as important, heh.
I think All-out attack, and just the personality each character presents in battle makes them much more enjoyable, personally. Teddy always jumps in and over-reacts to every little thing, and I can't help but chuckle.
Mhmm, I agree with Syra. The game does seem to give you a desent level to be at as long as you take your time.

Yes, I hope that grinding won't be an issue in Normal mode.

I'm a level grindaholic in my games. I like being able to ensure that I'll survive what's ahead. Yes, I know that grinding isn't always the answer in some RPGs, but that's just my habit. Besides, it also helps me get used to characters and lets me try/practice new things with them.
Grinding in this game is fun. I could listen to "Reach out to the truth" all day.

Because I can't just press the attack button all the time like other RPGs, the battles in P4 are quite fun. You can fully control your characters, "Reach Out To The Truth" is an awesome battle song, and it's quite fast paced. Yeah, the personalities of the characters really make the battles more fun. I actually like Teddie battle commentary. It's not annoying like Fuuka's. >_>; Also, the "old TV" static is kinda cool. I'm expecting my parents to walk in on me while I'm playing this game and ask if my real TV is breaking down. xD

Do you guys find yourselves needing to level grind in this game? As in, is it necessary, or does it just make it easier to proceed?

I haven't yet, no. It's like P# in that regard; your level barely matters at all, it's all about having the right personas.

I kind of disagree. I'm finding grinding in this game to be sort of hard so far, I got my butt kicked by the castle boss so I decided to start on the first floor and go all the way through it again to level up. Realized halfway through that I was basically getting worthless exp, like 3 exp per battle. Didn't start getting meaningful exp till like after the fifth floor. Without random battles it seems like grinding takes a lot longer in this game then it does in other games. Not that I miss random battles.

I haven't had to grind yet and I'm 35 hours in, unless you count going through the dungeons a second time to get the the optional bosses of each.

Itd be helpful to post your difficulties when saying "grinding is easy/hard". Im on Beginner and I haven't had to grind that much-- only recently did I start grinding because Kanji is 25 and I was 22 when I got him. I also had a lot of quests to fullfill. Im starting to get the hang of this, but I read I need to be around level 30ish to beat the next few bosses which worries me. I re-cleared the Bath-house stage and I only leveled maybe twice...

Its pretty rare for a single player rpg to have an addictive battle system. I haven't been addicted to grinding since FF8 (what is that? 10 years counting). Rare indeed.
Though I have to admit I've already lost 8 Tsukubames to some boss battles >.<

Two possible interpretations:
FF8's grind was TERRIBLE and it turned you away from RPGs for nearly 10 years
You somehow loved the hell out of of "drawing" a million times per fight and have been disappointed with every RPG since.

heh heh no actually the reason why I liked grinding in FF8 is because the enemies level up with you so there's always a need to get stronger. Well at least thats how I felt anyway. That and I was really really bored during my elementary and mid-school years.
edit: actually now that I think about it, I think Valkyrie Profile (Original) might have been a better example, Since by the time you reach the end of the game your already busting out all kinds of godliness just from being lvl 60.

Persona 4 does make grinding fun. I especially enjoy the way Yosuke fights. xD
Also, Just leveled to 22 in the bathhouse and plan to level a few more times before I decide to take on Shadow Kanji so back to grinding~

I take it everyone is playing in Expert mode?
That's what I chose, and I'm pretty much getting owned with every end level Boss. I don't mind the grinding, as much as finding key monsters to fight, to complete those student side quests. I've been looking for an item drop for about 2 hours, now, and still haven't recieved it. Well, at least I'm getting loads of cash from the search... Heh, come to think of it, I had the same problem with P3, and some of those gold chest swords via Elizebeth's requests...

I actually don't mind either, but instead of grinding, I clear out the dungeon as much as I can, floor by floor. I refuse to grind if possible, but I enjoy the combat system enough....although I'm not able to defeat the optional Castle boss just yet.
Then there was the Answer, or the expansion to P3FES -- I have yet to complete it cuz it's a pure grind, unlike the main game and P4. I need the other aspects as well, and by that time, I was kinda over the gameplay for P3. I'll finish that one eventually....

You don't need to grind in FF8. The purpose of the game was to have the enemies level up with you. So you could technically beat the game as a level 9 newbie as long as you have the right stock of spells and techniques.
And I didn't expect P4 to have an innovative battle tactic from P3. It's either you're strong enough or you're lucky (status effects won't get ya). There isn't much in the battle system that requires you to actually think about your next move...(games like zelda that puts more emphasis on equipment rather than your level may satisfy that fix).

Level 24 on Normal right now. And I've gone through Kanji's level 3 times now. And yet he still ends up kicking my ass with his 'Swift Strike' move. Wtf >_> I'd grind more but have maybe only 3 days before the fog lifts.

Heh, if Yosuke has "Dekaja," command him to use it every turn. The thing is all muscle, and I bet it was designed to kill you if you don't do something about the buffs...

I managed to get everyone up to Lvl 26 now and have been using Dekaja, and Ares to reduce the physical pain. It's a slow process though.

i lvl grind all the time i try to work on my slinks after what i have to do and then the enemy is like 10 lvls higher then me
Sure you can grind, it's just Atlus went the extra mile for you and making sure you don't spend to much time in dungeons with those crappy Arcana chances which halve your SP more then they restore it.Personaly, i think SP is what makes this game so hard sometimes.Albeit you run out in the middle of a long ass boss fight like Shadow Teddie and have to resort to pounding it with Pys. attacks, i don't mind it so much if i have alot of heals.
I kinda prefered grinding in P3 cause SP wasn't really a concern for me.

It's hard early on, but once you up your hermit link, you could easily beat every dungeon in one day...
It's fun for like an hour, then I get bored...definitely the combat here is funner than in Persona 3; of course not that it was not in P3, but power leveling can be dull sometimes. After an hour I just press triangle and rush battles lol...the other part of the game..the socializing, and raising social links...I like that I could read loads of text for hours...I find each character charming...
