The magicians known as "Variants" seek an ancient power called "Matrix". The main character is Kaito, who is a Variant apprentice. After getting "Matrix Gear", Kaito attacks them. And something mysterious appears in front of him.

Looks cute, though it bears a disturbing resemblance to Hoshigami. The story is exceedingly generic as well. neds moar "choose your hero/ine".
I'd back it regardless. Atlus USA and Flight Plan have played nicely in the past, too, so there might be even a slim chance of it.

I would go for it as long as it wasn't possible to get extremely powerful early in the game. I can never help myself when given something to do in a game, so, lets take disgaea for instance, when I gained access to the item world, I could not stop doing the item world. This caused me to get too powerful for the game before I was even a third of the way through it, and most of its fun disappeared. I think I prefer optional stuff like that opening up after you beat the game. Have the normal storyline, and what not, but after you beat the game you gain access to addictive stuff like item worlds, and optional fights galore, and you can't get the best stuff till after you have beaten the game on the correct difficulty, meaning no powering up. Would make you enjoy the game a lot more I would think, and save the true innovation for a second play through, making it like a totally new game.
Then again, even if you could make yourself insanely powerful early on, I would probably get this seeing as I am a sucker for pretty much any srpg's in existance.

Flight-Plan's SRPGs (after SN1&2, anyway) have a name for being somewhat on the difficult end. I highly doubt that you could level very quickly at all... (It always took me at least like 3-5 free battles to get enough exp to level just a couple characters in Summon Night, and those battles aren't exactly things you can finish in a few minutes...)
Granted, I haven't gotten very far in DSS, but... It's already looking up to be hard later, OTL. Or maybe I just suck at SRPGs. :\ Either way, this game isn't going to be broken very easily.
That opening plot summary is okay, but it's kinda vague and misleading. :u
I'll replay the beginning later and see if I can provide something a little more descriptive, hahah. XD;

I support this 100%. Since SRW:OG's won't be coming out here anytime soon, this is probably the next best thing i'm getting to an SRPG that isn't made by NIS.
Bring this over here Atlus, Please!!!

Yeah. FP really emphasizes good tactics over level grinding. Since you can't get much EXP from grinding, it makes that a pain in the ass and you're more or less forced to smarten up and think your way through battles. XD; And I hear that putting all your EXP into a single character to make a tank is a pretty lolfail tactic in these games, too. XD;

Posting again for posterity!
Actually lol no, but hey! There's a chance we might be seeing this game over here. Vivid chance.
RPGFan seems to have gotten an interview (http://www.rpgfan.com/features/interviews2007/index1.html) with the president of Flight-Plan, and one of the questions is quite relevant to our interests!
Q: Dragon Shadow Spell has received critical acclaimed from American gamers who have imported the game's Japanese version, but is there any chance the game will see a US release?
A: We are looking into this right now as well. Essentially, we should have developed a foreign version [of Dragon Shadow Spell] at an earlier stage. With it being game for the PlayStation 2 format, I have this sense that we missed the timing. This is also related to our development lines. We are going to open our mind about developing foreign versions [of our games], but that doesn't mean [this will happen] immediately.
While not concrete by any means, that first comment from Watanabe is certainly a nice glimmer of hope!

The entire statement is pretty reassuring (if badly translated), really. He's vaguely stating that they feel they missed an opportunity by not introducing it to other markets. Games like this certainly aren't blockbuster titles down here, but when one catches people's eye, word gets around.
I just hope they change the cover art a bit. I can see it turning some people outside of Japan off.
Hayato
11-26-2007, 05:45 AM
If it gets over here, they probably will change it. I personally don't have a problem with the cover art as it is, but I agree that it could be something else. It's a little boring, I suppose.
I like the art they used for the LE soundtrack and instruction manual a lot more. It's the art on the first page of the magazine article posted earlier (third scan?).
And if that's really FP's sentiments on the matter, I think (I hope?) we're pretty much good to see a better amount of FP games over here (meaning: at least one, hahah~). That makes me happy 'cause FP is pretty much my favourite developer, lol.

Something I've always wondered about is why Flight Plan, despite looking like a perfect company for Atlus (or others) to team up with (style of game, etc.) for localization, has almost no releases stateside.
I think we've had...Summon Night for the GBA?
And that's it?
Anyway resuming this after nearly 9 months (freaking FES stole my life, I'm done with anything Persona related for a year)

This was touched on in an RPGFan interview (http://www.rpgfan.com/features/interviews2007/index1.html) with Flight-Plan's president. The reason he gave was the company's "development lines," meaning that they lack the staff to work on their own games and overseas versions at the same time.

It's possible. I believe there's some rule about there being a 2 year timeframe for a US game publishing company to localize an out of country game. If no publisher get's the right's for the game 2 years after, then it can't be localized. I don't know if that's the rule or not, but i may be wrong.

It's baffling to me, some of the localization choices made recently. Zoids Assault? Master of the Monster Lair? Ontamarama? Draglade? I can't help but wonder.
Odin Sphere, the Shin Megami Tensei titles (which are still coming thank god), SRT: OG 1 + 2, Etrian Odyssey. Those are sweet games, but it seems like they're throwing darts at a list of the most random japanese games possible to decide what to localize.
Why those games over this or SRT: OGs or KITN?
I love the art and style.
Day one.

I hope it's not too late for them to pick this up. I know it came out before Poison Pink and Twin Age but it looks so promising, the 2D in this game blows most PS2 2D of this style out of the water.

Attention Atlus, Can you give us an update on whether or not Dragon Shadow Spell will get an English translation? You do not need to get English voice acting done, we only need the text so we know the story! you can do it! And it will sell well to us!

In fact, just browsing the game in youtube and you know the game is special.
However I get the horrible suspicion that this game has missed the "window" to be translated (as another poster quoted Flight Plan saying). I think Flight Plan have all their staff working on their latest PS3 release, no one to spare with the localisation of a two year old game and also it would cost Atlus too much money to translate it themselves (for the money they would get in return). A great shame.

I'm pretty iffy on the alt 2007/story setting, but the systems sounds like they'll be awesome, and there seems to be tons of side quests, and such, which the more the better, so that's great as well. I would need to see mere detailed info, but judging by what I've seen so far, I would deffinitely give it a shot.

TBH I love the art style and the gameplay looks like it's straight forward JRPG, not the not like the soap-oparatic wankware I am trudging through with DragonAge : Origins. Yeah, Dragon age with the same art style as DSS and less er, "romance options" and... ok, I'll stop bitching.
