View Full Version : Is playing Persona 3 necessary for this?

For some reason, I like the look of this Persona over 3. I'll probably pick up 3 eventually, but does anyone know if I need to in order to enjoy/get this one?

Well theres a few references to please the P3 fans, but its not necessary to play P3 before P4. However, i'll tell you now: Since P4 is greatly improved over P3, if you play P4 first you will most likely find P3 dull in comparison. For example, if you played a PS3 game (of a given series) then went and played a PS2 predecessor (of the same series) you would find the latter dull in comparison. If you have time now (ei. no exams) go play P3 and see if you can beat it in 3-4 days :P

PS: Camanche, do you live in Kanata, Ottawa, Canada?

No, but I do live in Ontario. I used Kanata as the original name of Canada.

Not that I know of. I haven't pre-ordered anything in years.

Oh i see. Well like i said, if you got time, go play P3 before P4 overwhelms it.

Good, I don't think I can beat P3 in 2 weeks with work... Great to know, thanks.

err well you can gameshark your way through if you're only in it for the story. Level grinding in tartarus can be a bit boring.

Hehe, gameshark will be most likely the case here. Considering Persona 4 will be release prior to two days left, I'll be hard to finish it before P4 comes out. But if you must, then Finish Persona 3 FES in hmmm... a week then get your Persona 4 next week. Your call. ^^

In itself this is a great game, but i have a feeling that if you played P3 first you'd have a greater appreciation for P4.

Why hack? You make it sound like that P3 is only a chore, something you have to get it over with before starting the P4 epicness. By all means, just enjoy it while it lasts.

I recommend getting a save with your character at lv 99 and with a lot of cash, you will avoid all those grinding times and you can focus more in getting all the Social Links in 1 playthrough. You will enjoy more the story that way, that is how I did it and I'm not ashamed of it, I played P3FES for the story and not for the gameplay.

I don't get how anyone can play a game in 3 - 4 days. take your time and savor it. Or maybe that's just me cuz I have ADD and can't play games for more than 3 hours straight ever. that's max.

no i agree, i savor my games too. Im just saying, if you want the plot of P3, since savoring P4 > savoring P3

I would just split my time between the 2. you might get plot confused. but when one plot is at a stand still, play the other til it stands still, then go back and forth on and on as such. perfect plan. :)

No, but if you like P4, chances are you'll enjoy P3 and with it's prices being on the low currently, you may as well get it and save yourself the trouble and expense years down the road when it becomes a hot item on ebay where everyone claims it's an ultra uber rare OOP game with super small print runs.

I'm surprised at all the buzz P4 is creating. I want SMTIV dammit!

Pick it up from Amazon.ca with the coupon for 10 dollars off (MAPNEWNCSAVE) if you aren't in a hurry Cammy!

Possibly no artbook, though, but it mentions it in its product page, so It'll hopefully go better than the EP fiasco.

And you can also see the story bits of P3 in youtube, a lot of them are pretty decent anime.

Word on SMT IV.

I'm in the same boat as Camanche. I passed on P3 (actually everything in the SMT franchise, too) but picked this one up. I'm anxious to see how the mystery unfolds, although I already spoiled myself to some twists by flipping through the artbook. :\

I'm gonna play on beginner. XD

Then, are there any P3 spoilers or not? Because in this thread (http://www.atlus.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2479), they said that there are some spoilers, and i want to play P4 while I play P3

I seriously doubt there could be spoilers. It's a completely separate story. like how Final fantasy games weren't directly connected to each other. (weren't because now some are. but like 7 and 8 aren't related) but they both have common monsters and chocobos and such. well I actually I don't even remember if there's chocobos in 8. I think there is... *shrug* lol anyway yeah I doubt it'll spoil anything. completely different.

All I remember is driving some stupid car around in 8.

From what I've gathered, there are some very minor spoilers for P3 in some of the references. But it's nothing that would ruin the story for you.

I think what you speak of you wouldn't even get if you hadn't played the game though. Right?

Well, yeah. You wouldn't get the references if you hadn't played P3. So... I wouldn't worry about spoilers at all. As you said, they are entirely separate stories, just with common elements. Like references in anything else, it's just something to make people who've played P3 smile.

VIII is one of my favorite games. There are Chocobos, but they dont play a major role or anything. You could get Chicobo (a baby Chocobo) through PocketStation too.
