Good article but there are some problems with it.

First of all, Shin Megami Tensei doesn't mean at all "Persona" in English. The Persona games are actually a spin-off the original Shin Megami Tensei series. While "Shin Megami Tensei" is mentioned in the title of the North American release of Persona games, it's not the case in the Japanese release. Atlus USA probably added SMT for branding reasons.

The Imagine game, as far as I know, is not based at all on Persona, but on Megami Tensei 2 (no Shin), which is a game in the main series for the Famicom that was not released on North America. In fact, there are 5 games in the main series and only Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (which is named Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniacs in Japan) did hit North America.

As far as there is no "almost incestuous siblings", it's in SMT2, done tastefully like all non-usual concepts that Megaten games talk about. I won't say more, because it's a big spoiler for that game. Also, the main games don't involve high school students, we assume they are late teens or young adults, but school is never mentioned. The school setting is one of the big difference from the main series to the Persona one.

The whole Shin Megami Tensei series and sub-series is hard to follow in North America, hopefully the above explanations are good enough. This is a huge series in Japan, here we only see the tip of the iceberg. See:

From what I gather, it takes place somewheres between the first and second game. Also, I could be mistaken but your unable to use magic in either of those two where your able to in this. For purests, I guess that's an issue but I just dont care myself.

That's correct; it takes place between SMT I and SMT II. It bridges the gap, but IIRC, it's explained in SMT II anyway.

Very informative post, thanks. I admittedly have not followed the series very closely. I have always been aware of it, and I recently sold my copy of Persona and the strategy guide for it on eBay. The game was interesting to me but not my favorite. Still, I have high hopes for Imagine.

Funny story, when you look up SMT imagine on google, a picture of my beautiful kitty, Murbly, shows up as the first image result. So awesome.

I am sad the closed Beta chars are getting wiped, I have had a lot of fun. It does seem sort of tedious doing everything all over again, so I dunno, I might try a different build later.

I really like this game, and it's being free is icing on the cake. I'll prolly update the first post in the list with everyone's info sometime this weekend.

It has nothing to do with hardware, my computer is 2.0 GHz Duo Core, 4 gig RAM, plenty of spaces and a dedicated video card. But the character movements seem to have low frame rate; its not a smooth motion.
