Steal Princess was an easy game to identify since it is using the same name as its Japanese counterpart. The Dark Spire is more elusive. Like Steal Princess it’s for the DS and the ESRB says Atlus is publishing it. However, I don’t recall any game from Japan with exactly the same name. It could be a European game since Atlus USA is publishing Trackmaster, but there isn’t a European developed DS game called The Dark Spire either. Fortunately, the ESRB database now comes with descriptions and this is a summary of the Dark Spire.

This is a role-playing game in which players traverse through a dungeon to look for a stolen treasure. Players encounter monsters throughout the dungeon and can choose from a list of actions such as “attack,” “defend,” and “run.” Some story elements have graphic descriptions of violence (e.g., “…cut his own wrists and sprayed his blood” and “the sword impaled her through the chest”). Character accessories can include “bikini armor” and a “frilled codpiece,” while one scene mentions an “erotic panda.” Expletives (e.g., “bastard” and “hell”) can be seen in the dialogue, as well as references to alcohol products (e.g., “breath that reeks of rum”).

Hmm… dungeon crawling with basic RPG commands? Could this be the English version of Elminage DS Remix? Anyone else have a guess? “Erotic panda” could be a big hint too!

Could be Elminage DS, could also be Genmu no Tô to Tsurugi no Okite by Success:

hoping for elminage, but either one will do fine at this point. I need at least one EO-like game per year.

Interesting! I'd be happy with either game as well. Wonder which it is, or if it's something else entirely. But lol, poor Atlus getting all of its future annoucements spoiled by the ESRB.

Wow, either would be a really nice surprise.

Maybe want. Wasn't too big a fan of the loading in the youtube vids. I'd prefer Elminage. Nice regardless!

^But loading on the PS2 version right? I'm assuming we wouldn't experience that with the DS version. At least not to the same degree.

I thought Elminage PS2 was the game with the bad loading times. especially since I can't find the Genmu youtube vids.

^Yeah, I assume that is what she means, but maybe there is something I don't know about. I will geek out over either title, but I would prefer Genmu right now. I just like the looks of its stylized atmosphere. I also goofed around with the little online demo a few months ago and dug it.

edit - After looking at more pics of Elminage DS, I can't decide which one I would want more. Some of the monster designs in Elminage look pretty damn nice.

You are right Mimi!.

Yeah I referred to Elminage DS, the DS never made it into the post. I can't find any either other than the Success site ones and this http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=VYwfLTMIBwQ.

Quite a few Genmu pics that I haven't seen before right here:

Although some of these may just be larger shots of what is available on the games website.

edit -

Also you can extract some interesting comments regarding both Elminage DS and Genmu from some of the user impressions on Amazon JP:

edit again -

Pulled this from a user review on Amazon JP for Genmu:

"it raises the story to the tower and it takes secret treasure from the magic teacher who is confined and returns."

Okay so it is Babelfish and doesn't make a ton of sense but it does mention the elements found in the ESRB description.

I agree - either would be great. Genmu seems a bit more probable, but Elminage looks more fun. :)

Awesome. I hope it's Elminage, but we'll find out.

It seems incredibly unlikely that it would be Elminage. I mean one is a success title and the other isn't. The success game actually looks decent and I guess I would be happy with either, although I would prefer Elminage.

^It is hard for me to decide based on what I have been reading on both, but on the plus side, almost everything I have read compares both to Wizardry not only in play style but also atmosphere.

^Can always use more Wizardry-like games, IMO.

(btw, Kaki, thanks for pointing me towards Llylgamyn Saga months ago)

I'd definately be happy about either Genmu or Elminage. The flash demo on Success' site was entertaining.

^Which version of that collection did you get?

I have the PSX one, but I kind of wish I had the Saturn version. Doubt there are really any substantial differences, but I always like an excuse to pop something into one of my Saturns.

I got the PSX version. If I could track down a Saturn copy, I'd probably get that. My Saturn doesn't hiccup like my PSX.

TWEWY proved that there is a market for some really good, non-chilidsh story-driven games on the DS.

I hope that either of these goes through. :)
