I was a big Enix fan back when they operated independantly, they're still delivering the goods after the merger.
Taito has definitely grown some wings after being acquired as well.
Besides, Nintendo published some Atlus games in Europe too, so you shouldn't get any ideas out of that publishing deal. SE are aggresively expanding (http://www.siliconera.com/2008/11/14/bringing-western-games-to-japan-square-enixs-next-international-move/) into the international localization biz.

^The Square Enix thing was a merger though, not an acquisition -- not really the same as them acquiring Taito.
Not really sure why this seems to confuse people to this day. Enix of Japan was a much larger company than Square and technically "absorbed" Square.

I dunno.. I haven't been fond of Square Enix's most recent localizations... It just seems some of their edits and name changes are outright... ridiculous, IMO. (mostly complaining about Star Ocean) but what can I say? Being an American or a European, you have to be happy with what you get, because you might not have had the chance at all. =)

I'm really not a fan of Square Enix, so I'm a bit disappointed that they are the one who will be publishing the game in Europe. Nice to hear though that Europe will get some P4. :)

well it depends if square will modify or redo the localization. personally i like square enix games but they sure take their time to develop them. im also curious to see how a ps3 persona game will look like :P

^ same here. Maybe they'll feature a new online social link? Which means you'll be the one assigning your social link with your friend. Say, onlylunch2, I'll make you my emperor arcana social link, wow, wouldn't it be cool? :D

Why would they bother doing that? How could they? I doubt Atlus Japan is going to whip something up that even the Japanese aren't going to get. Those folks have all moved on to other projects anyway.

i used to play final fantasy online, but you cant do anything without a party (which takes hours to get) and everything the game is impossible to do alone and it always takes hours. also if you didnt keep up with the expansion packs, you would be screwed since everyone would play on new areas you cant get to.. its was just TOO TIME CONSUMING!! I would have to quit school, my job, and play full time just to keep up. i prefer my offline RPGS

As far as MMORPGs, glad I never got around to being able to afford FFXI.. lol.. I still want to play IMAGINE, though. Also, I'm too friendless to play online lmao

Yeah, i saw an article about IMAGINE in the P4 edition of PLAY magazine. It was an okay article but id like a brief and concise description. If you wouldn't mind Soushi, id liek to hear what IMAGINE is about/ what makes it special.
PS: YESS im too lazy to check ign.com or something :P

If I remember correctly, it was just a name that Square registered a while back. That's it. Just a name. Companies do this all the time by the way... It doesn't mean it'll result in a product.

That's a bit interesting to hear Square is picking up P4. I would have figured Atlus would have just released it to all reigons. I have to admit lately i haven't been too thrilled with Square as well Atlus has taken over as my rpg genre publisher ^_^ hehe.

I don't think Atlus has a European office and my guess is that Atlus USA doesn't have the capacity to oversee a worldwide launch. Squenix also did the Odin Sphere launch in Europe.
Who prints the discs isn't an issue to me as long as people get to enjoy this game.

If Square-Enix absorbs Atlus I will probably give up RPG. I haven't liked much of anything that SE has put out since the merger (except TWEWY which was genius). Aside from that, Atlus has become my Console RPG #1 Dev.

By they way:
The song playing in December, when there is that thick mist all the time, are being played on the official European Persona 4-site. Isn't that kinda spoilerrific? I mean, I was very surprises when I heard that tune, it was creepy and atmospheric.

"Omen" isn't a spoiler because it won't give the player any hints about the story. :P Hearing songs that are really significant like "Heaven", "The Almighty", and "The Genesis" would make them less enjoyable when playing a game for the first time though.

I didn't mean that it was spoiling because it ruined the story, it just ruins the experience. When you first hear it in the game, you should think "whoa, this song is incredibly creepy", not "hey, that is the creepy song I heard on the homepage before I played".

It's not bad at all. SE simply paid the most money to Atlus for the European publishing rights. There is no Atlus Europe, so someone else has to release it or we wouldn't see it at all. The bigger the publisher the more copies they will print, more advertising, in more shops, more fans. Hopefully they will start releasing all the other more obscure Atlus titles if it does well. We don't even see half their releases at the moment.
Thats awesome, not bad.
Also, pre-ordered it. Flood SE with money and they'll release Devil Survivor, Devil Summoner2 and Persona1.

Somewhat off-topic, but do anyone know if it's KOEI's fault that Persona 3/FES had a noticeable slower framerate than the US one? I really noticed it when I played the PAL version first, then played the American version of FES later.

Regarding the PAL cover, if it weren't for the big, blue screen the blue plastic would totally crash with the design.

It seemed like all they had to offer after that was mediocre games with stunning CG

I don't suppose you're familiar with the meme surrounding Nomura. The dude has a belts and zippers fetish on ANYTHING he touches. His best example of lunacy is Dirge of Cerberus, there is one character who has belts covering his mouth and zippers on his wings.

Nero's up there, but I'd give the prize to Donald from KH2. His hat has no less than four intersecting zippers that serve no function, whatsoever. :D I mean, at least you can explain away Nero with "fetish."

I realise that I'm replying to a post from several months ago, but I still wanted to say this. Pretty much every single game that comes out in Europe has the North American localisation as its localisation. Very few companies even bother to respell the American English words for the UK; like changing "armor" to "armour" and so on. Square Enix are actually one of the companies that do that small but welcome change. They also localised Dragon Quest VIII in Britain and that's the also version you got in North America.
Anyway, we'll be stuck with people saying "So I was, like, DUDE!?" again, by the looks of it. I can't imagine anyone, even a major company like Square Enix, bothering to relocalise such a lowkey game.
What would be amazing is if they keep the Japanese dub for the EU release. I mean, I'd bet money that they won't, but still...

Well, roughly half of the actual OST, same as the NA release (without the Social Link Expansion). Since you can easily buy the proper OST anyway, I'd rather have something a bit more interesting; something you can't readily buy off the internet. Then again, European game releases don't come with anything interesting 99.9% of the time.
One of the best things I got for pre-ordering wasn't even an item, per se. When I pre-ordered Final Fantasy XII, I got 50% off the deluxe limited edition guide book. Took it down from £20 to £10.

First of all, you want them to say "So then I went, mate?" or something overly british instead? Second, the voice actors are extremely talented, and it fits better that they speak American. Why anyone would play a game with a language they don't understand, when the one they do understand is excellent, I do not understand...

So much Square Enix hate in this topic. Srsly, why would anyone worry about them buying Atlus? They are interested in expanding their western presence, so why would they buy a niche Japanese developer?
And it's not like Megami Tensei poses any threat to Final Fantasy...not yet anyways.
Wouldn't mind seeing Atlus building up their base though. They've got to be one of the handful of developers that doesn't seem to be/whine about losing money by the bucketload.

Why anyone would play a game with a language they don't understand, when the one they do understand is excellent, I do not understand...
(a) Why would I want something overly-American rather than "overly-British"?
(b) Most British people don't say "mate" or "bollocks" or "bloody hell", just certain types of people. Just like most Americans don't say "What in tarnation is going on here!?" or "Hot diggity dog!" Look at Dragon Quest VIII. Jessica spoke totally differently from Trode and they both spoke totally differently from Yangus. In P4, they're either an adult that speaks in plain American English or a young person that constantly spews out huge combos of "dude", "anyways" and "I was, like, sooooo not interested". Is Inaba in the Orange County or something?
(c) The actors are not excellent. If they were, they wouldn't be stuck voicing obscure Japanese games and would instead be, y'know, actual actors. I don't know if you watch too much anime or cheesy drama like 24 or something, but seriously, watch something with real acting in.
(d) How does it fit better that they all have really typical American accents? It fits just as well that they'd have any other accent in the whole world. Are you incapable of understanding that not everyone is American and that, in fact, most people aren't American? So that to most people in the world, the accents don't fit? At least with the original voices, it's undeniable, whatever your nationality, that the characters are in fact Japanese.
(e) The game is explicitly set in Japan. The characters and names are all Japanese. Just like watched a Bruce Lee film dubbed into English leads to it just being hilarious, watching something so obviously in Japan being voiced by failed actors in stereotypical American just... doesn't work. More and more foreign films are being left in their original language and subbed in cinematic release. Videogames are only furthering their reputation as being for kids or for idiots by trying dubbing everything, just like kung-fu movies will sadly always be remembered in the west for the funny voices rather than for the amazing action.

@ Teclo: I'm not a fan of dubs (I very much liked P4's though), but seriously, don't diss the voice talent. This cast obviously worked very hard in a very short amount of time so, at the very least, give them props for that. It's a hell of a lot more than you did.

Too friggin' funny mate. Let me ask you a question: what is the name of the company that did the localization? I'll wait a bit while you try to get your head out from the insides of your rectum long enough to answer.
Yes, that's right. AtlusUSA. USA. Not AtlusBritain. Not AtlusArgentina. Not AtlusMalaysia. AtlusUSA. That is all the justification needed to have American accents in the game. It was translated FOR the American market BY the American branch of the company.
I'll never understand why this is such a difficult concept for people to comprehend!

Inaba may not be in the OC, but Atlus is!
In fact, one day the P4 team held a meeting, and the editor was like, "Dudes! I have the gnarliest idea! Let's change Yosuke to BROsuke, and Rise's stage name to, like, RICE-T!" And everyone was all, "that would be HELLA SICK!" But then the project lead was all, "but if we did that, all the fans of the OG text would be all, like, BAWWWWW!" And so they were like, "word..." and they kept it as is.*

And everyone was all, "that would be HELLA SICK!" But then the project lead was all, "but if we did that, all the fans of the OG text would be all, like, BAWWWWW!" And so they were like, "word..." and they kept it as is.*
*not a true story. Fo'reals.

I went to one of the local gamestores today, and it actually had the PAL version of Persona 4 displayed. The coverart is exactly the same as the one in America, so the earlier information here is wrong, apparently... Well, the back of the cover is different, though.
