View Full Version : Is EP the most underrated rpg this holiday season?

Seriously, no one talks about it. I mean, I don't think it's the best game ever made(far from it), but I do think it deserves more recognition than it has received so far. Perhaps the fact that it's a ps2 game, combined with the fact that it isn't part of a well known series like P4 is contributed the lack of recognition that EP has been getting. Well, not everyone likes srpgs either, but as someone who has developed a taste for srpgs, my first impression of the game was pretty good.
I just started playing through Thage's story, and probably have a ways to go. Anyhow, I would like someone to discuss this game with, because no one in my regular forum seems to have picked up a copy. Why did I have to cave in when Atlus offered a free art book? Sigh.

That is the reason right there, no doubt it's a good game, just not a great game. There isn't much to talk about though, the game works and things flow fine. I feel nothing for the characters or story and therefore not much to discuss.
Personally I think VC > EP, even in terms of more deserving of the most underrated rpg this holiday season.
But yeh, EP is a good game, but not much to talk about. It's just one of those games you play and then move on from, that's all.

I'd definitely talk more, buddy, but I have other games to play at the moment XD

Maybe so, but people do talk about VC. I would have a copy if I didn't have to wait until after the holiday season to make anymore game purchases. I do want a copy of that game though, as I loved the demo.
But no one talks at all about EP, and though you said that it isn't anything special, I have played a ton of games that fit that description. I can understand why no one wants to talk about Rondo of Swords, but I think EP is far less bland than that. Then again, I haven't gotten far enough into it. I suppose I'll just have to play on, though I also want to try and finish P3 FES before the release of P4.

Same here. And I have an assignment to complete, and two exams to study for. I suppose life happens. Ah well, I guess it can't be helped. I may have started playing it too soon, as I'm sure most people who do happen to have copies have left them until they have completed some of their other rpgs.

EP is good. Some things I really like about it, but other things... not so much.
As for VC, it has literally impressed me in every way (I didn't go in with the highest expectations though). And the sales are piss poor for it :(
I think it has to do with A) it's an SRPG, and there aren't as many fans of SRPGs as other genres, and B) its graphics aren't as shiny and awesome compared to some of the other new releases. As GORGEOUS as the artwork is, it doesn't necessarily appeal to as wide of an audience.
I think it does also have something to do with the current economy. Not as much money to go around means people aren't as likely to "take a chance" on something like EP. Even the most talked about games, like LittleBigPlanet, haven't been doing as well as expected.
Who knows, it could turn into something that's discussed in smaller circles and then turns into something more.

I feel it was released at the wrong time, it's currently lost in the noise of chrismas with all the big releases. Not to mention that this game will appeal to Megaten fans, yet, it was released 1 month or so before Persona 4, so I guess a lot of pople had a choice to make and went with Persona 4 instead...
It should have been released in March 2009 or something like that, let people play Persona 4 and at that point, since no other Megaten games are planned (yet?) for that period, release EP.

Haha, yeah, I'm actually playing my other games now instead of EP, it's a good game, just other games are more fun to play right now. Yes, MS saga is more fun than EP right now, and that's what I'm playing :P
But really, EP works but what's there to talk about? Most of the elements you can find in other games and the ones that's different is the lexicon, delayed action/combo, the minigame and art style. Even the graphics in this game is well done but nothing to keep singing praises for, they're good but nothing spectacular.
With so many games coming out within the weeks that EP was released, everyone flooded to those games that has a larger stock for purchase and wider appeal. This game is good(~80%), but it's definitely not up there in the greats(99~100%).
I mean seriously, what DO you want to talk about for EP?

I agree with you there. I don't know, I just felt like starting a discussion thread, for the sake of starting a discussion thread, since I haven't heard anything about it prior to, or since its release date. Not to mention that I'm probably the only one I know personally who has a copy.
I mean, it isn't P4, and in terms of srpgs, it certainly isn't Disgaea, or VC. So far though, it seems to have a fairly dark storyline, though I haven't played it since I started playing it a couple days ago. I guess I'll just have to play a bit more. Wow, I didn't play any games at all yesterday. I guess assignments can have that effect.

You know... I think I retract my previous comment. I played VC once, and loved it. I'm playing EP for the third time now... and I rarely play games more than once (especially now when I have 9128381899123 games I bought but haven't opened yet). So that tells me that I just can't get enough of it, despite it's flaws. So you know, maybe it is the most underrated RPG. In fact, I myself underrated it.
On a side note, I really love the music. So much so that I've just put in an order for the Poison Pink soundtrack.

If you're doing different stories each time then I hardly think you're "replaying" the game 3 times. If you haven't unlocked the secret chapters and finished them then you haven't "finished" the game at all yet.
