LEGACY OF Ys™: BOOKS I & II - A LEGEND REBORN
Discover how one of gaming’s longest-running series was made
anew for Nintendo DS™.

As magical as the storied land of Ys itself, the heritage of this original
action RPG franchise spans over two decades and a number of different
platforms. Definitive in design, story, and gameplay, the two introductory
Books of Ys have long been etched in the memories of hardcore gamers.
At a time when few other games attempted such grand scope and scale,
Ys delivered on the promise of a sweeping narrative, fast-paced action,
and a stunning musical score that to this day still rises to the top of all-
time greatest lists.

In early 2008, Books I & II, completely remade for Nintendo DS™, were
released in Japan. Separated into individual games, Ys I and Ys II for
Nintendo DS introduced a number of new features and innovations to
the series canon, including touch screen support and multiplayer for up
to four. In bringing the titles to North America, Atlus worked closely with
the developer to put both games on a single cartridge, rejoining the two
first Books of Ys. Moreover, Atlus is endeavoring to add one more
monumental enhancement to the release: an entirely new localization.

Sam Mullen, Project Lead: “Early on, it became clear to us that we
had an opportunity to do something very special with this—only the
second time in nearly two decades—that the series has come to North
America.”

The only other version of Ys: Books I & II released in North America was
for NEC’s TurboGrafx 16 (known as the PC-Engine in Japan and Europe).
Brought to America in a very different era in gaming, the translation is
elegant in its simplicity and directness. Still, with so many exciting new
changes for the Nintendo DS version of the game, it became clear early
in production that the North American release of this franchise
revitalization needed an equal degree of attention.

Sam Mullen: “We understand how important this series is to some
gamers, how for many it was their very first action RPG. We’re not
taking this lightly, but we also see this as an opportunity to give the
game a 21st-century localization, a new script to match the game’s
remade features.”

Legacy of Ys: Books I & II is currently scheduled for release on
February 10, 2009, with an MSRP of $34.99.

Man... This is gonna rule. I can't wait for this to come out. Ys has always been my favourite series of RPGs, maybe cuz I grew up watching my dad play it on our TG-16.

February is gonna be a good month. Thanks Atlus <3

The more you guys mention this title, the more I'm inclined to buy it, since I doubt I'll get to the one I bought on the Virtual Console...and I like newer and better translations, so, yeah...

Oh, and the price isn't bad, either :D I hope you do the same thing with this game as with Luminous Arc 2 and make it come in an awesome, AWESOME box with a soundtrack :D

I'm just worried that some of the names of characters & places will get screwed up in translation. It looks like they already have Darm, being called Dahm. Please Atlus, don't mess up the names(with the minor exception of NEC's screw up, of calling Dogi, Colin).

At least ATLUS can't do any worse than if SqaurEnix had translated the names ><

This is going to win so epically, that if I don't get the chance to buy it, my head may explode.

Yeah, I am really worried about this.

I know that Falcom has some official romanizations for some of their characters, but they are often, in a word, awful.

I don't want to have Esteria being called Esterior, Romun being called Romn, Darm being called Dahm, and so on.

I applaud the desire to have a more acuurate translation than we have previously gotten, but the titles of some of the CD tracks worries me, they are even different than the original Japanese versions:

For example:

The Ice Ridge of Nortia instead of Noltia
The Palace Sarmon as opposed to the Temple of Solomon, both make me cringe.

Can we get any word as to how these will be translated? It might not be a big deal to newcomers to Ys, but to those of us who have been playing the series for years, buying every version, including importing from Japan the PC games, this is pretty important.

Some of the ones that NEED stay the same as previous releases:

Darm
Dark Fact
Lair
Tobah/Toba
Esteria
Sarah
Solomon
Jevah
Noltia
Fact (if you guys change this one to Fukt, I'm done, seriously.)

Atlus has done some amazing localizations in the past, so I hope that they don't mess with this one too much. Romanization of weird words is an art, and if done poorly it can hurt the final product.

Edit: Just noticed that it is Reah instead of Lair, ugh. I could have taken Leah, but Reah is just damn awkward in English.

I just noticed on the official website, that it mentions that Dogi is one of Gorvan the Bandits men. Gorvan??? Seriously? Where did that one come from? Goban must be spinning in his grave! Hell, Thomas Hayden Church(the guy who voiced Goban in the Turbo version, believe it or not) would probably be all up in arms over .......Gorvan:o I'm looking forward to this game, but, part of me feels a dread. Some things, I don't mind, like Reah, I can put up with that, infact, that's the name that they're going with for the Ys Origin translation patch. Reah is an actual name in Europe, & Ys in in Europe(more specifically France), so, it works for me. Lair I'd prefer, but, only because it's what I'm used to. Palace of Sarmon is.....bad. I know Temple of Solomon isn't right when translating from the original, which basically is Palace of Salmon, but, atleast call it Palace of Solomon, it just sounds better in english. Noltia/Nortia, I can handle either personally.

I'm with you Dragon but you should email Atlus directly. I am sure the translation team would at least read your concerns. They don't come on the board very much, if at all.

I don't even know if I'm the right one to spearhead concerns about the translation, mainly cuz I myself don't know japanese, but, I am an Ys veteran, not sure if that counts for something. I'm not even sure what department to email to, to reach the translation team, plus, at this rate, with the game only a month away, I wonder if there's even time to make any changes, or if it's already off to the factory.

Yeah I was just thinking that as I was reading your post. They game's likely to be at the pressing plant by the end of the month. I think Ys elitists (not that there's ANYTHING wrong with that) will just have to suck it up... and be thankful that we're AT LEAST getting more Ys love in America (not to mention a possible new Falcom relationship a la Success)

I guess I should be glad that I never played the original.

Knowing myself, I know I would have been annoyed to no ends with the spelling changes. :P

Yeah, I'll play it, & enjoy it either way, something's better then nothing.

Success? As in the guys that made the Cotton series? I don't remember hearing anything about them & Falcom!?

I think Ys elitists wont be buying this simply because they already bought the Japanese release when it came out. Every single time it came out at that.

The very same. Maybe you're not in the know, but many Success games are picked up by Atlus USA nowadays. Just recently they announced The Dark Spire and Tokyo Beat Down. I was just commenting that a similar relationship with Nihon Falcom would be fantastic.
