For me my number one favorite RPG is
Xenogears (I feel that the localization could have been better though)
My favorites were
FFIX
FFVII (not a fanboy)
Persona 2 Eternal Punishment
Legend of Dragoon
Tales of Eternia
BoF III
BoF IV
Wild Arms 2
Thats about it! Don't worry if your lists contain japanese only games because we all know that their jrpg's were some of the best and it was sad we did not get them.

Now that I look back on all the RPG's I played on that system... it's that and Tactics.
FFT,
FF7,
Tactics Ogre,
Final Fantasy Tactics,
Kings Field series,
Wild Arms,
Innocent Sin,
Eternal Punishment,
Star Ocean.
That's about what comes to mind at this time. Maybe Brigandine and Front Mission 3.

Suikoden I & II (of course~!)
BoF III & IV
Wild Arms I & II
Vagrant Story
Tales of Destiny I & II
SaGa Frontier I & II (Yes, you heard. I liked II, it was interesting.)
Persona I & II
Chrono Cross
Legend of Mana
Threads of Fate
Dragon Warrior VII
Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9...and OMG, there are like a billion that I love!!! I cannot choose between them all! >_<
Ah. I knew I was forgetting something.
Suikoden Series,
Vagrant story,
Saga frontier I.
I heard 2 was horrible but I never actually played it.

Yeah...it had some issues but I loved the graphics. The watercolor backgrounds were really fabulous. I think the storyline had a lot of plotholes but for a politically genre based game (which is hard to pull off), it wasn't that bad. Oh, and the characters were great.
It was one of the very first games I played, so, it left quite an impression on me. :) But, I guess to each their own. I can see why some people absolutely hated it. I still like it, though! (Although, SF I is the more superior of the two, despite having its own faults as well)

Saga frontier I.
I heard 2 was horrible but I never actually played it.
I think the worst part of SaGa Frontier 2 was the slow ass and totally dull battle system. It was a pretty interesting game if you could get past that part.
My list is:
Xenogears
SaGa Frontier
Suikoden 1 & 2
Persona 2
Valkyrie Profile
Front Mission 3
Dragon Warrior VII
Vagrant Story
Final Fantasy Tactics
Tactics Ogre
Final Fantasy IX (first half of the game anyway)
edit: whoops I forgot VP.

Seriously! I wouldn't be surprised if there were more than 5 threads...but I guess sometimes people just run out of ideas for topics. It's like one of those arkward, "So, how was your day..." conversations. But I guess this wouldn't be much of a forum if we didn't have repetition every so often. (But not all the time!) :D

Nah I'm just saying, I was the only one in my group of friends who played non-FF Square games till high school and even then it was seniors when I was just a poor freshie. I didn't even get Xenogears and Vagrant Story till they were super expensive.
Only reason I didn't like VS is because I didn't get an instruction booklet. I'm sure now with Gamefaqs I could probably understand and enjoy it.

Probably SaGa Frontier (I'm a huge fan of the whole series)
Final Fantasy 8
Arc the Lad 1 and 2 (c'mon, they're one whole game)
Dragon Warrior 7
I based my choices on the games I spent the most time on. I like getting my money's worth out of a good game.
jeffx
11-17-2008, 04:55 PM
soooooome of them:
Persona 1 & 2
Thousand Arms
FF 7 & 9
BOF 3 & 4 (3 more than 4 though)
Suikoden I & II
Star Ocean 2
Arc the Lad collection
Lunar 1 & 2 (yes I know, Sega games)
Tales of Destiny 1, not 2
I see a lot of Xenogears love but dudes, c'mon, the 2nd disc totally sucked. It totally killed it for me (don't want to start a debate here). I will just say that it could have been so much better and that the story didn't do it for me.
that said the PS1 was a faaaaaaaaaaaantastic console and I'm not sure the PS3 will ever top it (sure not headed that way). The PS2 is probably on par, but only so because it got sequels that were birthed on the PS1 so respect where respect is due!

C'mon the second disc was basically when an author tries to explain his novel and tie up the loop holes. Unfortunately it didn't work so well for them so the second disc in my opinion doesn't exist.
I thought Brigandine was okay but maybe not that special. It reminded me of Dark Wizard and Dragon Force, which were quite awesome.
I recall something about Square pulling the funding for the project, leaving the second disc the annoying, monotonous mess of text on a black background that we got.
From the first disc, when they had the means, they did quite awesome and varied stuff. Disc one was incredible.
The plot was really good as well, I thought.
Who knows, maybe one day someone else will give it a shot.

I think the second disc in Xenogears got the point across in the best way possible given the limitations that the team faced. While I would have rather played through all the dungeons and had the story told in a slightly different way I didn't really mind the parts where they were telling the story with stills.

Remember Xenosaga was supposed to be the way they would finally tie up everything but I guess they decided to make it unique instead.
Well, more like Namco decided to screw it up, and then jettison it. Shame, too, the first game being quite a seller, greatest hit and all. And one of my favorite Ps2 games if not for the most horrible sequels (imho).
I don't get why they felt the need to screw everything in 2 and get rid of everything that made 1 unique, deep, and neat. Not to mention the most horrible character redesigns that deffinitely weren't needed. and then there were the cool finishing touches like Xenocard that are nowhere to be seen.
2 just seemed incredibly shallow and rushed. Also short. I digged the soundtrack, though.

Nah, Xenosaga was basically the Xenogears time line re-imagined. There were lots of parallels, but it wasn't anything more than that.

System had lots of RPGs but these were definitly my favorites. Didnt realy care much for the Suikoden series as it became a pain getting all 108 charcters in the first and even more so in the second. The FF series took a downward spiral from 7-9 for me. Sure, the fmv were all pretty but god, I wanted to die of bordem by the end of the games. I was happy when they finaly gave 2 and 5 a domestic release finaly.

These are not in any order.
Vandal Hearts 1 & 2
Suikoden 1 & 2
Breath of Fire 3 & 4
Alundra (<3 Puzzles)
Tales of Eternia (Destiny 2 is a PS2 game!)
Valkyrie Profile (It's too bad the sequel is awful)
Xenogears (If only for the endgame when Fei can punch gears and kill them)
Final Fantasy 9
Chrono Cross (Game was kinda mediocre, but the music and art...different story entirely)
I don't include Persona 2 because I have yet to finish it. I'd also throw in Wild ARMS 2 if not for the fact that I haven't actually finished it, either.
I liked Star Ocean 2, but only really because I liked Leon's character, and the battle system was kinda fun at the time. Now that I look back at it I'm not so sure how much I really, truly enjoyed it.

I have to agree that the crafting was fun BUT it could be used to severely overpower yourself. I got a card from art that summoned a huge ass demon that casted a spell THAT KO'D a boss in one hit. WTF

I hated the crafting. I tend to hate anything that has elements of random chance in it; if it had been like the Atelier crafting system where X + Y always = Z, then it would have been great. But since crafting X and Y might make A, M, K, Q, 4, 7, or >, I couldn't really get into it.

Regarding Working Designs' jokes: the original jokes were just as silly and out of place, just Eastern specific. All they did was make it so it would carry a similar impact with a Western audience.
And as for Xenosaga II, agreed on the score. It was the only good thing about it. The vocal piece during the opening and anything with Margulis was better than anything from Xenosaga I's score.
Xenosaga III is the best of all three. Great music, fun battles, epic story.

I really liked Gamefan back in the day, It's editors made a bunch of magazines after, including Play (http://www.playmagazine.com/) (Which is really pretty but dunno If I like it's scoring system) and HardcoreGamer (http://www.hardcoregamer.com/). Dave Halverson did Gamer's Republic before Play. At least to me it felt more like GF than Play does. I do like Play, but more so as a nostalgia thing due to old GF staffers there.
Hardcore gamer is a joke. The tie to GF is weak imo. Yeah the founder was at GF, but it was very early on and he wasn't there long. It feels nothing like GameFan. The articles and reviews are laughable.
The current website is connected in name only I believe.
^^ No problem!. I actually suscribed to Gamefan back in the day, and even though they were REALLY spotty with delivery (I didn't receive like 3 issues, for issues they were having) it was my favorite game magazine. I never really liked EGM, and always thought of Gamepro as a joke. I also liked the comic in it. I thought Monitaur was neat.
Yeah. Play seems to score everything way too high, or on the last issue I read, not at all. But it's really really pretty and has an awesome anime section. Honestly I mostly flip through it for it's layouts. If I ever do a magazine, it'll be like that. The sterility of EGM has always turned me off, and GamePro's seems really childish. Play has the perfect balance I think.
My favorite scoring was 1up, but they toned it down too much when they moved to letters and now it's meaningless. I try not to read reviews anymore because I have noticed that I go into the games already knowing over half the story just from reading them, and get bored quickly, so mostly go on score consensus and obvious concept now a days.
Kakizaki
11-19-2008, 01:17 PM
The high scores may be a symptom of Halverson. He was well known for doing the same thing, whether directly or indirectly, at GameFan -- sometimes taking on multiple persona for reviews.
I guess he really likes games. Me and otter joke that Ebert goes "yay, movies! Wheeee!" whenever he gets sent a review copy, due to one time we went to the movies and he had loved every single one of them. There were a couple bad ones too, but I forget the names. Perhaphs he really likes videogames!.
I thought he was E.Storm, who mainly did Platformers. I think I got Crash Bandicoot on a 10 of his. That was probably the last platformer I ever bought for ps1. (It wasn't that bad, just...)

11-19-2008, 01:38 PM
^He was E. Storm, Skid, Takahara, and a host of others -- some of which appeared infrequently.

FFVII
Xenogears
Chrono Cross
Have you guys played these recently? I played through a bunch of PS1 games a year ago and I didn't think these held up very well (soundtracks aside).
Of the 3, I think Xenogears is posibly the best to withstand age. I didnt care much for the other two so perhaps my opinion isnt as impartial as I'd like. They've aged better then some games though.

It's been said, but the only two games REALLY mentioning, that stand so far above the rest of the RPGs are both Matsuno games: FFT and Vagrant Story.
OH MY GOD VAGRANT STORY WHAT AN INCREDIBLE GAME THAT WAS. I still can't get over it.

Not a really big fan of VS either. I liked just about everything about it except the battle system. I was pretty young when it first came out so I could never get a grasp on the system, so I was pretty turned off.
Not alot of games that I would label my favorites.
SMT 1 and 2 remakes were definetly high on my list. The minor tweaks they made made this alot more bearable to play than on the SNES. Except that bug in 2 of course.
The Arc the Lad series ranks high on my list of favorites in general. I'm suprised theirs no love for it. I'd say 2 worked out the best out of the 3. However, 1 was just short enough and left you hanging, I found it just as enjoyable. I'd rank 3 as the last, I wasn't really into the hunter's guild missions, but it was still an excellent game with a great concept, story and characters.
Aside from that Valkyrie Profile and Castlevania Symphony of the night are the only games i'm interested enough where I can play them multiple times.

I don't know why, but I just love that game. It entertained me in every way possible. If you ever get free time, you should try starting it up again.

^I enjoyed what I played of it. Liked the characters, liked the story, and like the translation. I just wish the bestiary was more diverse. I felt like I kept fighting the same stuff way too much.

I still have a bunch of Gamefan magazines in my closet, it was definitely my favorite gaming mag.
As for PS1 RPGs :
Top 10 :
Xenogears
FFT
DQVII
Suikoden 1&2
Star Ocean The Second Story
SaGa Frontier
Valkyrie Profile
Ogre Battle
Front Mission 3
Honorable mentions : Kartia, Vanguard Bandits, Threads of Fate, Lunar, Chrono Cross, Tales of Destiny 1&2, Thousand Arms, Parasite Eve. And I think I kinda liked Beyond the Beyond way back when it was a new game.

^Take a gander at what some dude is charging for issues of GF on ebay sometime. It is pretty damn nuts. Of course one of the ones I am missing is the one that he wants nearly $100 for. Ridiculous.

While I haven't really read anything other than this last page of the thread that I'm posting on, I was very happy with the PS1 era. I'm actually replaying Breath of Fire 4 right now.
The two Breath of Fire games, Arc the Lad 1 and 2, and Dragon Quest 7 are among the best RPGs of the era, let alone, of all time IMO.

Final Fantasy Tactics and both Lunar games.
When I look back at PSX, those are the only RPG's that really stand out to me. Of course, PSX is also home to maybe my two favorite console games ever, Resident Evil 2 and Metal Gear Solid.

I have to add Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden to the list.
I would say my Best and favourite PS1 RPG's are...
Xenogears, Chrono Cross, and I would say Persona 2: Innocent Sin, but I have yet to play and complete that yet...(I'd have to do that on my PC or PSP or something...)
As well as FFVII, and FFVIII but on a lower scale.
