Hi all. I recently went ahead and ordered Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga from Amazon. Good choices, right? They were the only SMT games in stock besides Persona. So I was just wondering if there's anything I should know about Nocturne. I also wanted to know about DDS2 and Devil Summoner. If I'm correct, DDS was recently reprinted, so does that mean DDS2 is next? I'm just trying to get the big picture here of the SMT games since I'm still pretty new to the scene. Thanks!

anything I should know about Nocturne

Fog Breath is your best friend. Seriously.

Nocturne: Status altering effects and buffs are REALLY good in Nocturne. Also what Iris said. The money you get is based on how fast you finish fights. Keep your starting pixy.

DDS: Recarmdra is probably the best skill in DDS and for a long time I thought it sucked (Revives and fully heals your whole party at the cost of the life of the caster. Get it on two characters and you can fully heal at will).

Also, Omoikane are weak to guns, Argilla and Serph excel at them. DDS has a cliffhanger ending and DDS2 completes the story, haven't heard of a reprint for it. Devil summoner RKVSA is an action RPG, a bit on the easy side, but I liked it, and you might if you are into the Demon capturing, although you don't get to chat with demons. I think it goes for cheap, and you could certainly do worse. It also has some pretty neat easter eggs about the first SMT, which although never officially released here, got a fan translation that is pretty good.

That's what comes to mind.

You should have ordered it from CDUniverse for $30 a pop >_>

But it doesn't really matter because both games are worth their prices.

Thanks a lot for the info, Iris and Sei. Honestly, I'm not quite sure of what everything means...yet, but I'm sure I'll understand once I start playing.

Also, thanks for the heads up, unknown. $30 a pop is quite the steal! I've never heard of the site before though. I wonder why they list both games as preorder?

They probably didn't get the reprint until now.

Iris is right. You want fog breath on the main character ASAP. Also, use spells like Megido, Megidola, and Megidolaon sparingly if at all. They tend to suck up a lot of SP in exchange for the damage they do, even though Almighty spells ignore most resistances.

He's right. And even more if you're scoring to beat the fiends of the Candelabra in Nocturne. And don't worry, those games are well spend money, trust me ;)

I guess the highest death rate I had was definitely in DDS2, now that's a difficult one imo...

Noah himself made me want to cry, since I realized I only had three elemental moves on me. :( That boss is one of the most aggravatingly long, drawn-out, unpleasant battles out there!!

I love nocturne and I think any SMT fan should get DDS1, DDS2 and Nocturne besides Persona 3 and 4. They are older but as good as other SMT on PS2.

Talking about Nocturne, I just remembered my crazy final party with shiva, beelzebub and Metatron. :agree: This game's hot. Too bad Atlus rarely reprint anything old.

Oh, wow, those are the exact three that I used! I ignored peoples' advice and beat the labyrinth on my first play through and I didn't bother buying that one demon from a ghost the knew pierce to fuse it into them. It was tough but I really enjoyed myself.

I would play DDS first. It will get you used to the battle system and if you want a perfect save for transferring over into DDS2 you need to play it twice. Need to be in hard mode to fight secret boss to get an item in DDS2. Beat once to unlock hard mode.

If you start with Nocturne, unless you played one of the persona games{has a similar fusion system}, trying to learn both the battle and the fusion system, might be a little overwhelming.

I will also note that when you start on to the next game, while the enemies might look the same in both games that they have different resistances.

The DDSS games are actually way easier and much more forgiving than Nocturne.

Digital Devil Saga was one kickass game.
The first one was hardish simply because the enemies at points LOVED to spam instant death spells. And one of the characters was useless due to the fact that every single status ailment was a critical on him \ aka it worked all the time \.

Still, it was a very charismatic game, I enjoyed it.
DDS 2 was harder, grittier. It felt a bit shorter, but it was far, FAR harder. I remember training hours to fight you know who in the twisted labyrinth. damn turncoat =3.
Finally beat him, and it felt nice. Annoying to grind that many hours but eh XD..
It was still fun overall.

Cielo wasn't useless, he just required more effort to make useful.

I don't know, get hit by anything and he'll get it. That doesn't sound all that useful to me.I loved, LOVED his -character-, but the battle portion was like hahaha lolwut no.

Well, the thing is that with ailments, the passives you get null his weakness, instead of just making him strong to it like the elemental ones, so he can start eating turns. And he's built for dodging, which makes him a nice candidate for party healer once you're far enough down the relevant paths to cover that weakness.

It's just the number of slots required to cover all of those weaknesses (unless you put out for Null Ailment) that keeps him from being too broken.

I will attest to the fact that Persona 4 is a really handy primer for learning all the skills and abilities common to the series, as well as get you used to the fusion systems of the series as well.

Nocturne didn't do much to inform you about which skills did what and what you were getting from fusion. Persona 4, Devil Survivor and Devil Summoner 2 all do a great job of letting you know exactly what you're getting from fusion and abilities. Persona 4 shares the most common terminology, though.

Nocturne I preferred over the DDS games. Nothing against DDS, mind you, I just liked having greater control over what my choices were

At the same time, it only takes one cheap instakill attack to connect and it's game over <3.

play DDS before 2, it is so much more rewarding, and if all you've ever played are Persona games, it's time to wake up and smell the coffee, because both DDS and Nocturne are immensly better than either P3 or P4, in every aspect, for not having a social system, I find them to still be incredibly enthralling games. and don't get confused by zan...it's garu

If that was still in response to the Cielo thing....Hama and Mudo aren't ailments, so his chances of getting nailed by them are the same as everybody else's.

Last I remember, and this WAS about 1-2 years ago, there was atleast one attack spell that had an element to it, coupled with death as an alment.
Or something.

Not every status ailment. Cielo is only weak against Panic, Charm and Sleep, iirc, which can easily be cured with a Panacea or Patra.

I love Cielo's demon form, too.

Also, to the OP, get the Mutual Karma skill ASAP in DDS, so then the characters you don't use still gain EXP from battles.

Zace makes a good point. You should dash for that skill right away, since, like we said, your entire cast will be FORCE-SHUFFLED around. You -will- have to use everyone at some point or later, so that definately helps.

I have to agree that Nocturne and DDS are better than P3/4. I can't see why most new SMT fans prefer Persona over the older SMT *sigh* Quality battle >>> extra stuff like social link, yeah

:D Yup they are the best three demons in nocturne.

A note on making the best party, mine was:

MC with fire, ice, elec, wind and phys repel, focus, pierce and freikugel.
Metatron with tarukaja, makakaja, debilitate, fire of sinai, prayer, victory cry, life drain and dekunda.
Shiva with same skills as MC except hassohappa replacing freikugel.
Beelzebub with rakukaja, sukukaja, debilitate, death flies, mediarahan, victory cry, life drain and dekaja

I love how my freikugel deal 10000 damage to lucifer :D
