Many of us have blogs or post on other forums and would love nothing more than FREELY advertise the upcoming Ys DS game. Since Atlus always comes up with such cool websites for every single one of their games, how hard can it be to set aside 10 minutes and come up with a couple of different web banners?
Or maybe someone can come up with some nice unofficial ones?
Here are the standard formats:
500 x 100 (good for signatures)
468 x 60 (standard web ad size)
200 X 40 (standard Japanese blog ad size) ** this is the one I want
Also acceptable are 200 x 74 and 180 x 60. Seriously I think all future Atlus game websites should come with web banners, AIM icons and forum avatars. It's really not that much more effort and you guys score free publicity.

Maybe he doesn't have the means?
Plus he probably wants some professional quality Atlus ones. I dunno I sorta like the idea. Devil Survivor avatar please.

I'm a programmer not an artist -- I'd rather be writing COBOL than using PhotoShop.
The point is that we don't have access to high-res art and that it would be really easy for their web designers to come up with a few nice banners for us to use.
I've seen some pop up on websites like RPGfan. so they've done it in the past, they just don't make them public.

Off topic, but...
People still use COBOL?!

hell yes we do (http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/10/23/1746254)
In 2003, Gartner estimated that there are 180 billion lines of COBOL code in use around the world and that there are still 90,000 programmers who use it.

But isn't the actual demand for COBOL devs much lower than... say... C++ devs? Hell, even VB/PowerBuilder devs?
Err... but in any case, back on topic...

it's not like it's that hard to learn, and a COBOL job is probably safer than any other dev job. matter of fact, COBOL > Lisp... would rather flip burgers than write Lisp ever again.
anyway it was just a metaphor to illustrate my disdain for graphic design.
YES, BACK TO MY BANNERS!!! GIMME GIMME GIMME.

We'll likely have additional stuff + graphics available as the release date gets closer and the website continues to develop. Ys is one of the projects that I haven't been involved in recently, so I don't know what they're doing on that one.
Regarding old languages... My uncle is/was one of the guys who helped set up Visa's network. Now it's incredibly out of date, but they don't dare touch it in case it breaks, and he's one of the few people who knows how it works (since it was before the days when commenting code was feasible). So he's retired now, and gets to charge them major $$ as a "consultant" when they come crawling for help on the system he designed.
On reflection, maybe I should have had him train me in COBOL and force Visa to hire me as his protege. I'd be the Daniel Jackson of the internet age.

^ yup this illustrates my point perfectly. I'd say there's even a need for FORTRAN programmers, but given that COBOL controls the world of banking and financial transactions, that's where the real gold mine lies. Replacing the systems would cost millions and would likely introduce new problems (if it's not broken, don't fix it) so they just update them when necessary. It's just dirty dirty work if you're used to swanky IDEs and fancy-shmancy current languages like C# (which I'll never ever touch, no thanks)
Thanks for looking into my banner request. I think this should be implemented for all of your future websites.
I agree. I'd love to see some banners and such. Ys needs a whole lot more promotion so we can see more of the games getting English translations. D:

My programmer friend once told me that one of his biggest career regrets is that he never learned COBOL. He says he would have made bundles in 1998/1999, what with all the Y2K scare and all.
Great first post, welcome aboard Adol the Red.
W-Wait.. aboard? I.. don't do well on boats. Something disasterous always happens... LET ME OFF THIS THING!! Wait.. no.. no, don't.. Erm.. I'm going below deck.

COBOL is an acronym, is it not? If i'm not mistaken it stands for Completely Obsolete Boring Old Language. :)
Also, since i'm on the subject of funny computer acronyms, did you know Macintosh is an acronym?
