Okay! So, I have this really cool Machete avatar. I love it. However, as badass as Machete is...I'm tired of it, and I can't decide a new one! Hence...I need le'help!

Reference to the movie. Kurt Russel's character has an actual book where he makes notes on people he meets.

Really? I never drew the connections!
But using that logic I could say that the Green Mile (probably mixing the wrong name to the movie I am thinking of) was a rip-off or homage to Cool Hand Luke.

What? Cool Hand Luke is about a guy that can't conform to prison life. The Green Mile is about a docile man (thrown into prison for someone else's crime) who has healing powers.
If you mean One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which is the other prison movie that comes to mind, the novel came out in 1962. Cool Hand Luke didn't come out until 1967.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is about a man pretending to be mentally ill to get a free ride in a mental institution and about how his wild personality effects the fellow patients and staff. And how he is 'dealt' with. I do have the right book, right?

My mother has had a mental illness (I won't say which because it's damned serious) her entire life and has been in and out of mental institutions when I was growing up. I used to have to visit her in there..
I've been in the mental health ward of the hospital (a patient) for several months as well to check if I could have the same problem (which I don't, thanks for putting me in the lockup, incompetent health system).
This book means more to me then most people could imagine. I read it when I was young. It helped me confront things like suicide and many of the other issues I had to understand about mental illness and the way people are treated in those places. It never made me cry though. It was something different for me. What did you think on it Olethros? I have some interesting views on the mental health system and they are rather negative.

Actually, when I think about it, off the top of my head there are some pretty blatant nods to Deliverance within PF -- pretty simple connection without thinking much. Imagine what we can up with if we really try.
I image IB will be a 'homage' to Kelly's Heroes and the Dirty Dozen.
edit - Walken + Watch = Deer Hunter. Wow, I'm not the only one that noticed.......

I did see it. I'm self-admittedly a movie geek. And no, I wouldn't call it a rip off...
Now, Guy Ritchie movies...THOSE, you can pretty much call rip offs... Tarantino, sure he borrows...but the dude has his own style, clearly.

Fine. I won't drop it. If you wanna argue so bad, I'll fight wif ya.
Homage =/= ripoff. Inspiration =/= ripoff. Borrowing =/= ripoff.
Interviews. Self-written statements. Geeking out. All of that is found all over the place regarding Tarantino.
The line between ripoff and homage can be reeeaaallly blurry sometimes...and as long as the creator denies blatant thievery and says it's a homage, all the other opinionated viewers' rants pretty much amount to nothing.
Biggest reason for that...when homages are concerned...due credit is given. In ALL his films, Tarantino ALWAYS gives due credit to his inspirations in one way or another: either through interviews, or easter eggs found in his movies.
THAT is what seperates him from ripoff artists. He's a writer who cites his sources.
