Sadly, I do not have a PS3, though I am planning to buy one...in 3 - 4 years time.
This is my first spoil of the month:
http://www.aarongifford.com/images/elantris.jpg
Tor classifies this book as an epic fantasy. I'm not sure if that's actually the case. There is no quest in this book, nor is it about the end of the world. It takes place (as many of my books do) in one city, and is a mixture of political intrigue, interesting magic, and character dynamics.
The setting is the city of Elantris and the surrounding suburbs. There's a force in Arelon known as the Dor that randomly chooses people and grants them divine powers. Elantris was once the city of the gods, where anyone who was 'chosen' went to live. Ten years ago, the Elantrians lost their powers and caught a terrible disease instead. From that point on, Elantris became a prison city/contamination zone for any who caught that disease--for the Dor continues to choose people and curse them.
The book follows the experiences of three people as they interact with the people of Elantris. Raoden, a prince, catches the disease in chapter one and is thrown into the city by his own father. Sarene, Raoden's sight-unseen fiancee from a political treaty, arrives in the city and gets involved in schemes, troubles, and politics involving Elantris. Hrathen, a priest and missionary, is sent to convert the people of Arelon--and is told that if he fails, the people of the country will need to be killed instead.
The three stories intertwine as the truth of what happened to Elantris, and its inhabitants, ten years ago is unearthed.
I FINALLY FOUND IT AFTER MONTHS OF SEARCHING

That's the steamy-romance-assassin book by Jacquelin...something. XD
Yes, I've heard of it. I read a few pages of it but I didn't quite like her writing style. As much as I like subtlety with a deadly knife hidden beneath the words, I thought Kushiel's Dart was a bit too slow. I'm more of a fast-paced type (loyal George Martin fan) and at times, I do enjoy slow ones but yea, like I said, that was a tad bit too slow for me.
Elantris, on the other hand, is actually quite fun. Probably another of those end-of-hope type of fantasy that I really like. So far, so good, though I thought the writing style seemed quite simple. But yes, you should try it out, Ray. =)

Lamora was nice, but to me, it was like a lighter version of George Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series.
Though I liked the fact that trouble seemed to follow him everywhere he goes. And also that he's not as deus ex machina as most other fantasy character.
Lamora's a wimp with brains, and that's cool. 8)

That's a really good price on Persona 2. I'd definitely be willing to pay that.

For me, I was in it for the plot and the Shakesperian dialect. I'm infatuated with Middle English dialog. But I'll give this a shot.

Nope, this has just been the ongoing rule for the past couple years.
Its alot more fun looking at stuff people have bought when they take their own pictures. Its just annoying when I see the same picture of VC 4 times in a row, i mean whats the point? I actually find it just as time consuming having to google search a pic, upload it to my photobucket account, then post it here.

Fuyukaze: where'd you get that disgaea 3-pack? also I'd place a small wager that you picked up Baiten Katos and Suffering new from FYE who are clearing out older gen games at 50%.
Also I don't remember my Clubhouse Games having an orange band like that. Supposedly it's turned into quite the rare DS title (http://blog.videogamepricecharts.com/2008/07/5-rare-expensive-nintendo-ds-games.html).
It got reprinted along with Hotel Dusk, Elite Beat Agents and a few others. You can find it in any Wal-Mart now.

The disgaea is just the strat guide. The guy threw it in as it wouldnt show in the inventory no matter how he tried and corperate told him to just toss it. Katos and Suffering were bought used at gamecrazy. The FYE was picked clean the day everything went on sale for more then 20% by the same 2 ebayers that have been keeping stores empty of Wii systems for the past year. Clubhouse got a second print so it shouldnt be as hard to find. It's going for $20 which is alot cheaper then what they were fetching a few weeks ago. Just wish they'd do the same for Tetris DS. I passed on my chance to have that game and have regreted it sense.

Aksys has actually managed to surpass Atlus in the "we print like 5 copies of our games and you can't pre-order them so if you really want to play them good luck" department. I had to hunt for almost two weeks to find copies of Battle Fantasia and From the Abyss, and the stores around where I live are exceptionally good at getting in rare and strange games.

I bought it from Play-Asia and paid $46.66. It’s complete and looks new. I’m really glad I didn’t buy it from eBay. Now I want to buy the second one but I think it’s going to be hard to find a non-buggy version.

Yeah, I collect comics, too, so shut the #### up about that. And I can pretty much guarantee that those variants won't be worth squat in ten years. The one in ten/twenty/hundred variants from a few years ago are already plummeting in "value".
What speculators still can't grasp, despite watching their "valuable" collections end up worth less than the paper they were printed on during the 90s, is that the only comics worth anything are that way because the comic itself is rare, not because it has a rare sketch variant cover.
The comic industry is heading to the same place that nearly destroyed it in the 90s, and stupid #### like dealer incentive variants and bull#### organizations like the CGC are just hurrying things along.
But hey, if you don't believe me, I've got some sweet gold foil variants of Deathmate Red and Black I'd be willing to part with for pretty cheap ;).

Nothing too noteworthy in the games I got. Typical Mario fare really since my friend wasn't huge on games. I already have a decent sized collection of my own. I do now own two copies of Castlevania 4. When I was testing it out, I popped my copy of Chrono Trigger in (which I bought brand new...I was probably 15 when I started that save file) and I was pleasantly surprised to see that my battery hadn't gone dead and my original files were there from all those years ago.
For the NES, the only game I really liked out of the dozen or so in the box was the NES version of Tiny Toons which I played a lot as a kid.

I have 2 within a 20 minute drive from my house (around 6 more if I drive an hour, no want long drive!) but neither have it. Actualy, their RPG selection in general has began to thin out over the past couple months with Persona 3 being the rarity that sticks around. No, it has a camera, it's just really small. It's next to the AT&T logo. As small as it is the quality is better than my old one. And this does all that other stuff you find as a minimum as well. Yeah, my set is 36" inch, so I would assume so. The problem is that the game doesn't support 4:3 at all so if you play on a sd set there will be bars at the bottom and top of the screen further mushing the letters and numbers even more than most 360 games.
Don't get me wrong, even though it was small and blurry I could still make pretty much everything important out except some of the numbers, but it was giving me headache.
Wow Flu, that was crazy quick on the HD monitor decision. I'm curious about your impressions of it.
Yeah, it was interesting how that ended up working out. My friend saw it in BJ's and told me about it and it ended up being the same model that I was going to order from Newegg.com except it was $20 cheaper. There were only two left so she picked one up as my Christmas present. She was nice enough (<3) to let me use it a little earlier when we saw how small the text looked on my sd set.
The picture quality looks really nice and crisp. The only real problem I noticed was some light bleeding through on the top and bottom of the screen when the picture was black, but otherwise it wasn't noticeable. It was also kind of hard getting used to the smaller screen at first, but that didn't last long. Finally, you will need some way to play audio if the monitor doesn't have the proper inputs/ speakers.
I ended up using a old ass boom box.

Last time I checked the default controls, Square is punch, X is Kick, Triangle is Slash, Circle is Heavy Slash, and R1 is Dust. But you can go into the options and tweak the controls to your liking (like if you're using a stick or if you want one of the buttons on the PS2 controller to be multiple button presses to make Roman Cancelling easier).

You mean Squaresoft? *scratches head*
I can't speak for you, but for me, I'll buy it for the simple reasons that:
1. It's one the the best RPG's I've played, so it's an all-time favorite of mine (meaning I'll play it again).
2. This is the definitive (best) version.
3. Oh, and the original is on an old cartridge system. My SNES isn't exactly reliable anymore... the same probably applies to at least some people.
I bought it for PSX in Final Fantasy Chronicles, but it suffered from serious slowdown that ruined the experience. The extra features like the anime cutscenes, which told more of the storyline and were just plain cool, the bestiary, and the development artwork, were nice. Maybe they weren't enough to justify buying that remake over the SNES original, but I of course didn't have the original.
The DS port keeps the features of Chronicles, doesn't suffer from the load times, added two dungeons, and a new alternative ending to the game. When the price goes down it's an obvious choice for me.
A lesser game wouldn't be worth it. Chrono Trigger is.

I would buy the CT DS port if I had the $$, but thats saved for Persona 4 and Re:COM next month.
I have the other 2 versions of CT, only got to Lavos on the SNES version, my gf stole the PSX version lol; If anything though, this is the best version to buy. The SNES one is (or at least was) quite expensive complete, the PSX version had horrible loading times and added cutscenes; the DS has all that those two had including a new ending, monster arena, cutscenes, movie viewer ect. The price is average, too. =)
My only real complaint about CT DS is that everyone is starting to complain about CC... CC is one of my favorite games of all time (played it before I got Trigger, too..).
I'm working on my second playthrough of Star Ocean FD, but its not really quenching my thirst for Star Ocean SE, which got pushed back =(

If the gym scares you or you truly have that much money, consider investing in an elliptical trainer. You can easily use it while playing games or watching sports/TV/anime, etc. They're not even that expensive, I got mine for 200$!

I've been going to a gym for 2 years and I haven't seen any results.
So I'm trying something new. I'm still going to go to the gym, this is more to help augment it when I can't make it to the gym(The gym I go to is like an hour away...I can't always drop everything to drive out there.)

I would tend to agree with you.
If you have been going to the gym for two years and not seeing results, you are doing something radically wrong or, no offense, are BSing about going to the gym.
I can say this with a fair degree of certainty after lifting and running off and on for 10 plus years and back on it consistently for the last 2 years straight. The only people that don't generally see results are the ones that are kidding themselves (going every now and again), don't plan a regimen, and don't take diet into consideration.
Having a gym an hour away probably doesn't help. I live in the middle of no where and my gym is about 15 minutes away. If you live in a urban area, there seems to be 24 hour fitness places like every couple of minutes -- at least it seems that way in the Twin Cities.
Gen Eric Gui
11-28-2008, 06:06 PM
I can assure you that I know what I'm doing when I go to the gym, and that my diet is hardly the problem.
And the gym I go to is the closest and most convenient 24-hour gym in my area. That I can also assure you. I've done my research and I know/do my ####. It hasn't helped at all.
I don't really know why I have to defend this purchase, but as I already said I bought it as a supplemental to my current workout, not as a replacement. I know it's not going to replace the gym, and I have no intentions of passing it off as such. But it gives me something interesting to do at home that keeps my ass off the couch, and it's something I can do a lot more regularly and reliably than having to drive all the way over to my gym. I was highly skeptical of the thing at first myself, but I've got a pile of testimonials from people who say it works and helps, and I've done it first hand and know it's at least mildly interesting and keeps you interested in doing it daily. Which is something I need, because the gym is boring as ####.
I already did a 30 minute run with it today, and by the end I was sweating and my sides hurt, which in my experience is a good sign. If I keep building it up from there, I figure it'll be a good base to actually lose something.
jeffx
11-28-2008, 06:21 PM
No need to defend the purchase! I actually wouldn't mind trying Wii Fit but I find it's way too expensive considering its primary purpose and the great results you can (normally) get with traditional cardiovascular excercise. Anyway it's good to read that you're at least having fun with it!
Do you live near a university or campus? Those generally offer gyms memberships to non-students. I don't know how you can deal with driving 2 hours to use a gym; mine is walking distance. Like I said an elliptical machine isn't even that expensive these days and will get you great results!
oh and the "gym is boring" attitude has to go!!! that I'm not sure I can help you with though... I'd go 7 days a week if I had time.
Anyway I know this is a touchy subject, sorry then, but I'm rooting for ya or anyone who wants to get in shape. OK back to the spoils now ... ;)

If 30 minutes from Wii fit made you sweat and ache, you weren't doing something correct in those 2 years going to a gym. In one summer I increased my running distance from 3 to 7 miles -- actually less than 3 months. In about 2 months I drastically increased my max bench about year back. Wii fit shouldn't kick your butt if have been going to the gym for 2 years.
As jeffx said, and I assume as someone who goes to the gym he can probably see right through people in regards to this, the biggest thing is the attitude. People like to make excuses for themselves. I can't tell you how many friends have I seen fall to this mindset. I can almost guarantee that if you think the gym is boring, you most likely made excuses not to go, cut your workouts short, or just didn't bother doing stuff correctly. Not a knock on you, but I see this all the time. I used to spend nearly 2 hours or more at a time, 5 days a week lifting with running to supplement that. I have seen a thing or two and by all accounts, I am a lightweight compared to a lot of guys at my gym.
You don't have to defend the purchase at all. I have no problem with people wanting Wii fit. That wasn't my point. It was that if you really have been going to a gym for 2 years consistently, you are doing something (more likely lack of something) very, very wrong.

Eh, the 360 looks nice but for now I've got my eyes on the PSP. I realize it's limitations, I've seen it's liabrary, and I know it's good points vs. bad points but there's two things going for it over the 360. I have games for it and the majority of what I want can be had for $30 or less (majority under $20). The 360 will wait till next year, for now, it's PSP time.
