View Full Version : This game really deserves more popularity.

I don't know... it could be the fact that everyone I've known who has ever tried it completely loved it. I'm not saying "THIS IS THE BEST GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED" since it's not (in my opinion) but right now it's most definitely the favourite multiplayer game for anyone around here who has tried it. We had many multiplayer games of different style, objective and demograph on multiple platforms and along comes Dokapon Kingdom which satisfies the entire crowd.
I can't blame Atlus USA for it not having as much popularity as it deserves. I've seen a few advertisements here and there and Atlus has a good reputation. It's just hard to know how good it is until it's tried. A lot of people are turned off by the cutesy graphics while others, like myself, were drawn in by them. All I know is people who have tried this game with me have usually gone and bought the game granted they have the right system!

Both of my sisters hunted copies down after playing it the very next day. If there was a way to release demos this thing might be more well known, because you really have to play it to understand why it's fun.

Hopefully I can repeat that success; unfortunately (or not), the friends that I'll be playing with don't have Wiis, so if they really liked it enough to go look for copies, they'd definitely go for the PS2 version...but I want sales on the Wii version! =(
So, it was the cute graphics that pulled you in? For me, it was definitely the "friendship-destroying game" that did it, and just reading up on some of the things you can do XD
EDIT: Just to see how well anyone can like the game, I'll plan for my sister and her boyfriend to join me once--the problem being that they're sour toward anything that's not Rock Band/Guitar Hero. And yeah, they're casuals.

Friendship destroying is definitely a huge point. The first time I played it with my sister, I had a bounty on my head for trying to attack a store. She was chasing me around the map, so I used a squall to randomly send her somewhere. We were playing normal mode, and I ended up sending her to the southeast island. She was like level five, and all the monsters there are, what, level 60-ish?
It took her about an hour to get back up around Dokapon castle. We played again recently and I got telekinesis. She actually threatened to tear me in half in real life if I even considered using it on her.

I remember getting that e-mail from Atlus. I think it was... player 4 addressing a letter to player 1? I was very curious and when they revealed it, still a little "Eh...". Then I got to see the artistic approach, the general premise (IE backstabbing) and heard about being able to do the Story Mode with multiple people. It was still kind of meh since I thought the game was actually going to try to be all serious, and perhaps drawing from Mario Party (eww). Then I got a good taste of the kind of humour, which is a very memorable element of this game. Reviewers also claimed the game wasn't like Mario Party at all. I was sold! I really like games that don't take itself seriously all the time. Unfortunately it was too late to preorder at this point but I was still able to get it on shelves. :P

Many of the people I've introduced to it were turned off immediately by the cute factor. Add to that the appearance of a "Mario Party clone" and it's hard to get some types of people to even give it a try. The saving grace, really, was that it was localized by Atlus, which does have a good reputation, especially among RPG fans. After they try it they understand the awesomeness of course, and wonder why they doubted me.
Some trouble I've had is keeping all of the players' attention for a longer game. If someone is falling miserably behind, but not to the point of achieving certain... balancing effects Darklingdom it is hard to keep them interested in continuing. The extremely competitive ranking system is what I think is at fault for this.
In other games with long play-times like Civilization there are many factors to take into consideration. Someone may be in the overall lead, but others may have more culture development or more territory, a better economy, etc... In Dokapon, however, only one thing really matters: town control. Sure, other tidbits like gifts to the king and held money help nudge you past other players who are close in standing, but in the grander scale it's really just the towns... and good luck catching up. This is fine for me, but for a lot of people it turns them off, because they think "what's the point?" The more players I get in a game the harder it becomes to keep them all having fun.

It doesn't sound like any of you are in college, because that's where I could see this game just going crazy.
If this game existed back in my dorm, we would have been battling it out for sure.

^ Maybe they have a hard time playing video games while drunk. ;)
I really like this game and I'm in college :D.
It's really hard to get into it at first, but we have been having a lot of fun with it.
Agree with the thing about towns, tho. Oh well, at least if X gets unlucky against a random monster they can lose towns.

It could have gone without the whole Weekly Ranking thing. :[ Most of the time we just mash through it anyways so it feels like a waste of time.

We used to have "drunken Jedi Knight" tournaments. You finish in last, take a shot.
(Hey kids! Don't drink until you're of legal age! And always drink responsibly!)
Those were pretty hilarious times.
For the poster that said they hadn't seen a commercial...

I am. We will probably make it a regular weekend game once it catches on. My roommate and I play it pretty often in Story Mode.
I pretty much bought this game as a replacement for Smash Bros. Brawl, which was our "dorm game" for over a year.
Drunken Mario Kart 64 last year was a blast... good times.

Enjoy it, Sir. If you enjoy local multiplayer, I'll just say that once you leave college life it gets tougher and tougher to organize it.

People of America and Canada, I think you can see through the lies that Olethros is trying to spin for no particular purpose. As you can clearly see here, he knows I am right, and therefore he is wrong.
Don't allow yourselves to be fooled by some guy who can't tell what Star Trek episode his avatar is from.
Concentrate on the issues. Like how Dokapon Kingdom is totally awesome.

*sigh* And all I'll have left is Internet multiplayer and MMO's, which hardly count.

To be on topic then, I picked up the PS2 version on day 1. I've held off from playing, however, until the holidays when I travel back to visit my family.
Also, the spin your campaign is trying to put out there will not fool the public. For no purpose? The news always has a purpose, even if that purpose was simply for my own amusement! :p

You could always try changing up the objectives with a Battle Royal. Also, If they're falling behind enough to feel like giving up, the contract should be right around the corner. Then it doesn't matter who has towns.

I played this game with my friends while smashed on an entire bottle of plum wine. Nobody noticed until I hit my head on the way to the bathroom. The game is really really not hard to play for anybody ever.

I just donīt like the fact that you MUST always start with the 3 basic classes, and not with the ones with have already unlocked. But i like the game very much, finished it pretty fast.

heh. We've played several times in the Normal mode, but we just recently started the Story mode and had a long enough game to unlock some of the next set of classes. Having a blast despite lukewarm review that attack the game's art style.

But i like the game very much, finished it pretty fast.'Coz the game is easier to balance this way. Imagine how horrible it would be if you could start as an Acrobat, Alchemist, Spellsword or either of the two hidden classes! I don't mean to say the classes aren't balanced, though the advantages of those classes would allow for either too fast or too safe development early game. Later on, their advantages aren't so hot but at the start of the game... the idea of facing a Spellswordis horrible. Early on, Magicians and Warriors won't have the time to develop enough to stand a chance.

I want to buy and play this, but I live in the boonies and it is literally impossible for me to organize a group because most of the people within driving distance of me don't even know what a videogame is.
Maybe I'll buy a copy and save it for when I get my own place closer to actual civilization.
