I doubt Atlus would pull one on us, and I think most of the DS's cheap cash-ins are behind us. Blue Dragon Plus is pretty much the one left.
Unless you're counting ports/remakes of good games, but even then of all the ones coming out on the DS in the future I'd only really consider Chrono Trigger cheap/lazy.

I guess this is a matter of opinion, but I think the new Suikoden game fits the bill quite nicely. Until I see an across the board improvement in the quality of DS games I will probably be wary of most any title on the system. Especially if it seems to be borrowing from the success of another game or series.

It could turn out bad but I really doubt Konami is keeping the Suikoden IV/Tactics guys around to make cash-ins on a franchise that brings in less cash with each new installment, I think it's more of a last chance to prove that they can actually make a decent RPG.

What does that have to do with what we were talking about? Is Order of Ecclesia a Suikoden game? Was it made by the guys who worked on Suikoden IV/Tactics?

Back on topic, several of the details about the upcoming Suikoden DS game have me convinced it will be sub-par at best. No true runes? Lame.
So that would qualify it as a quick DS cash-in to me. Why wouldn't Atlus Japan jump on board with their franchise to make a quick buck as well?
Kakizaki
10-29-2008, 12:51 PM
^I can't claim to know much or anything about a very small handful of the titles, but if you look purely at the titles Atlus JP has put out on the DS, they seem to be fairly decent across the board.

I don't know where I read it, but someone linked me to a news release Atlus made in 2004 regarding how they would release an SMT game for DS. That was it: "Shin Megami Tensei DS". Here's the link. (http://ds.ign.com/articles/534/534079p1.html)
Of course, being nearly 4 years later, the project most likely changed.

I like what I see for the battles but WHAT THE #### were you thinking when you guys decided to make the main character a nekoboy Atlus?!? Ugh, it's the thing I hate most about the game right now. *sigh* At least contracts are in the game. :\
A few key game credits...
Director: Shinjiro Takada (Langrisser series, Growlanser series director)
Art Director: Akiko Koto (Nocturne, Devil Summoner 3)
Supervisor and Demon Design: Kazuma Kaneko (Megaten series)
Character Designer: Suzuhito Yasuda (Yozakura Quartet manga)
We'll find out more and see a movie when the website opens on 11/10:

I like the character deisigns, they look interesting.
Anyone got translations of what the article says? Based just on the screens and the artwork, I'd day one this so hard my head would spin, but I'd like to know more about the game itself too.
I really like the character design and demons are by Kaneko. It looks pretty interesting. Text sort of makes it sound like "The world ends with you" Says the game takes duraction across 7 days.
I guess it's not the post apocaliptic serious business computer based devil summoning that I wanted, but it doesn't look like DS pap either. Day one confirmed.

I share your cautious optimisim. Is it too early to start playing the guessing game? The game comes out January 15 in Japan, so I'm thinking April 2009 here. At most a Q2 release. I would get shot for making that prediction just a couple of years ago, but the hot ticket these days is narrow(er) release windows.

A bunch of translations of what Famitsu had, I think RPGFan did the best/most accurate summary (lol 1UP) so I quoted them:
Atlus today announced first details regarding Megami Ibunroku Devil Survivor, its recently revealed DS title. The game, whose development is already 90% complete, is a strategy RPG taking place in modern day Tokyo. Kazuma Kaneko is serving as the game's demon designer and supervisor. Directing responsibilities rest with Shinjirou Takada (whose has previously worked on the Growlanser and Langrisser series). Art design is handled by Akiko Kotou, whose recent track record includes working on Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner - Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army.
Because of the appearance of demons in Tokyo, the Japanese self defense forces have sealed off the center of the capital city. Trapped inside the sealed off area, the protagonists are fighting off demons, trying to survive. Unfortunately, the clock is ticking and within a week Tokyo will be wiped out, meaning there is little time to waste. Using a mobile gaming device known as COMP, the protagonist can make deals with demons, persuading them to assist his party in battle. Atlus is promising the additions of new demons not seen in previous installments of the Megami Ibunroku series.
The development team promises to tell a dark tale in classic Shin Megami Tensei fashion. The scenario will feature multiple branches that can be freely explored. Through meticulous interviews, the team has been able to create a virtual Tokyo in the game that should feel very real. Battles apparently will be fast-paced.
The protagonist is a 17-year old senior high school. Apart from this nameless hero, two more characters were revealed in today's update: Atsurou Kihara and Yuzu Tanigawa are classmates and friends of the protagonist. Aiming to become a programmer, the former is a gadget geek. The latter is a childhood friend who happens to have some interest in her classmate.
Megami Ibunroku Devil Survivor will be available in Japan on January 15th for 4,980 yen ($50.17 USD)

All I know is that I want this! A lot!
I'm very curious about "fast-paced" battles for an SRPG, and the fact that it says in the translation that it's grid-based, but you then transition to turn-based when facing monsters...weird, but interesting!
I'm certain we'll get this; I mean, look at the facts:
Atlus USA loves Jack Frost and Pyro Jack
Atlus USA loves teenage protagonists with secrets
Atlus USA loves the SMT universe
Atlus USA loves the DS
And most importantly, Atlus USA values our cries, so that alone is enough.
Win-win?
Man, I hope so! D:
Just for clarification's sake, does anyone know if this was the SMT title mentioned waaaaay back in '04? I remember four games or something: SMT, Snowboard Kids 2, Caduceus (<3), and...okay, I only remember three, so, yeah. Is this it? If not--either way--I'm still happy that the DS gets a SMT title--yay :D

So it really is Takami Asano? I could only see Asano somewhat clearly on the scans so I didn't post that credit here (I did on another board with a question mark though). I was wondering if he's this (http://vgmdb.net/artist/2380) Takami Asano, the kanji is a bit different so probably not... now I'm wondering what this guy has done before.
And yeah the website works since Famitsu came out officially but it doesn't officially open until 11/10 (Japan time so probably late 11/9 for some of us).

There were also some updates to the official website since my last post, some more short video clips in the character and keyword sections, and a new wallpaper as well:

When Atlus releases Devil Survivor, they should pack it in with the some excerpts from the soundtrack (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-8l-77-1-49-en-15-devil+survivor-70-36g3.html) for all initial launch copies (a la Ys and LA2). Maybe, if they're super special awesome, they could create their own mini artbook? Maximum spoils, here we come!

Cool! I hope we can see DEVIL SURVIVOR in June as they say! The game is really interesting and it feels just the same as Majin Tensei series, of course, with a lot of improvement. :P

I gotta agree, hopefully this is a summer game. I don't think I could wait until fall to play this one.

Day one, though I don't know about pre-ordering it.
Depends on if it goes up before April 7th.

I want to pre-order my copy of Devil Summoner 2 first before DEVIL SURVIVOR, I don't have a DS, so it can wait a little bit.
I like your signature, Pibbman! That's hilarious!

Yeah the image boards are starting to fill up with Devil Survivor art. Thats why I said earlier I hope if it does come here, we get an artbook. (official art of course)

I honestly can't wait for this game. It looks like a worthy romp through post-apocalyptic Tokyo if I ever saw one. >D

I hope it comes with a soundtrack too. I just hope it isn't a major disappointment like the LA2 soundtrack. Not to say that I didn't like one or two of its tracks, but the entire soundtrack was instrumental, and it didn't include the Japanese song from the trailer(I haven't started playing the game yet, so I hope that's the intro music too).
Once again, a game is being released with a trailer that has a Japanese song that I like, so I really hope it's included with the soundtrack if there is one. As for an artbook, this is certainly as good a game as any to include one as a pre order bonus. What I really want though is the game. I haven't played any SMT games other than P3, and P3 FES(with P4 waiting to be played). But based on both trailers(I watched the Japanese trailer too, and it has more footage), and the info, it sounds great. I'll definitely pre order it, regardless of whether it comes with a pre order bonus.

With the announcement of Dark Spire getting the box set treatment, I wonder if that increases the chances of Devil Survivor getting one. That would be awesome if it came in a nice box set, pleaaaase Atlus. hahaha.

The MC are a normal person, no nekoshounen or anything. Although I'm getting slightly tired of the ragtag dresscode and sleepy behavior of the latest SMT mains, I still think it fits this title nicely. He actually kinda reminds me of L from Death Note. Anyway, I'm curious concerning the whips, or USB-cables or whatever they are, are used for. Are they gonna jack-in the demons with this cables to their COMPs?

Oh! Me too!! I think it would be worth pre-ordering if I get a soundtrack and/or an artbook. I'll probably buy it from Amazon cause here in Puerto Rico they don't bring that kind of stuff>:P it sucks

Yeah, that'd be cool as a Atlus spoiler incentive. I'd rather have a soundtrack as compared to an artbook.

I'm not sure if this was answered in any of the other posts here but...
Anyone know who the artist/character designer is? I love the art.
UPDATE:
Sei, I'm looking in your general direction since you have an avatar based on it ;)

Someone finished a video playthrough of the the Japanese version, I can now say without a doubt that the game was made by Growlanser and Etrian Odyssey staff at Atlus. :)
