View Full Version : So, what'd you want to be when you grew up?

I'm aware some of us are still growing up, and some are already grown up; hopefully, those that are still growing can already have a feeling that what they wanted to be won't happen (one never knows, though!).
I'm sure most of us grew up dreaming of becoming stuff like doctors, vets, and the like--so what was/were yours? For me, I always told people "I want to make games;" of course, that was when I was really young (and ignorant), so I didn't know a lot about what actually happens when making a game--all the efforts of multiple people. Flash forward to a couple years ago...
I still wanted to work in the gaming field, but I didn't have any of the talents like [digital] art, and so on. I did/do, however, possess the skill of writing/storytelling, and I had always loved stories in games, so it seemed like a natural fit.
Flash forward to now, I've yet to really do anything with my skill...kinda. I decided that even though I love gaming, a job in the games industry for me is just that--a dream. I still want to be a writer, though--heck, an author, maybe. As a testing of sorts, I'm entering some writing competitions (short stories) just for fun :D
So, what about you guys? You don't necessarily have to be detailed like I was (one could argue); just say what you wanted to be :P

Oddly, I'm working towards a major in digital art (minoring in Asian Language). Also oddly, I am writing a comic and my sister is illustrating it. I am apparently trying to steal dreams.
My sister and I are working on a submission to send out to publishers at some point. I was never ambitious as a kid so my dream was pretty much that I'd be able to sit around and play video games and watch cheezy horror movies for the rest of my life.
I've always sort of enjoyed writing above other stuff, however.

Mine or my sister's? I suck at real art and have only begun learning some of the computer art programs (which I really enjoy). I could post some stuff from the comic if that's what you mean. It's manga style though, so I don't know if you want the thread to burn down.

I always thought I would be a doctor, but when the time for med school came up I was tired and broke and 8 more years of schooling with massive debt looked way too daunting.
In the end, I love what I do now, though, and even when given the option to go back and get my MD I passed on it.

^ Yeah, haha. Extra funny because I used to be really into drawing and sketching stuff when I was in junior high/early high school, and was somewhat good, but I always sucked balls at painting. I gave it up because of a really crappy, discouraging teacher, and I regret that now.

^I was really into art as well. I had an awesome art teacher that probably let me get away with too much. I was the first kid in school to ever bake up a plasticine mold and character - although I could never make an effective armature. I guess before I graduated HS I was also really into special effects -- but the older type with camera imagery, miniatures / maquettes / models and that type of junk.
That's pretty good James. I wanted to go into art too, but gave up at some point.

First, when I was... much younger, I wanted to be a doctor(to help people and whatnot) until my brother showed me some pictures of a frog dissection, then I wanted to be a painter (untill I just got bored of it), then a graphic designer (my dad scared me saying that I wouldn't make it in such a vast world etcetc), then a concept artist for a video game my brother would someday create (he didn't go into gaming though), and now I'm in highschool and want to be a manga-ka (but I still have a long way to go with my art-style). Although, the route I'll take (most likely) is becoming an english teacher instead.
@James fiend : I like your drawing style, particularly the way you draw hands. They seems...elegant to me. ^_^

At first I wanted to be an astronaut, until I saw some video of a bunch of shuttles exploding. After that I wanted to be a game journalist, and I guess I'm working on that now...
I used to really want to be a librarian. Then I grew up and went to college and got my B.A. in history, since somewhere along the line I realized how much I loved it and I figured maybe I'd be a teacher.
Now I'm going back to wanting to be a librarian, if I can ever find the energy to sit down and do grad school applications. There's a pile of GRE study materials on my desk. Taunting me.

I wanted to be a game tester.
Then I found out that job sucks balls.
So I wanted to be a game programmer.
Ditto.
Then I wanted to be a game journalist.
Almost got into that field, but subsequently found out it was pretty ####ty.
I'm currently pursuing becoming a game designer, and it's looking like it might just be the job I've been looking for all this time. And I might actually get my wish too!

When I was little I wanted to be an astronaut, then I realized how friggin creepy that could be and how many things can easily go wrong.
Then I wanted to be a game tester, and that would kind of ruin games for me.
I kind of want to write stories for games, I still have my over 100 page story that's not done yet about me and my friends getting to save the world from impending darkness, if I can make that into a game, I have 3 endings in mind: happy one where everyone lives happily ever after and darkness gone, the one where darkness leaves, but half of us end up killing ourselves because... stuff, and one where darkness takes over the world and enslaves humanity.
There was a brief moment of time where I wanted to be a math teacher, I still kinda do so I can work with my friend.
Still not entirely sure though.
EDIT: Forgot I kinda wanna be a voice actor for games too. I definitely randomly yell names of personas in my car. XD

Growing up in Canada, I played hockey for well over 10 years. Obviously I wanted to become a pro... then I joined a punk band. S,D,R'n'R as they say! The prospect of playing sweet gigs every weekend and recording killer albums that would reflect my laughable teen angst (hey we all go through this) quickly overtook my pro ambitions (much to my parent's dismay).
Ironically now that I no longer travel all over this continent playing dank bars and shady clubs, I have become even more of a hockey fanatic than I ever was... think I still have a stab at the NHL?

I just ooze hockey, don't I? Even over the intertubes... maybe it's because I've always associated with Adol Christin (Ys Hero, guy in my avatar) and his hot-blooded traits. I betcha he'd make a hell of a player!
And I'm joking about playing pro at my age (I'm no Gordie Howe). I should be looking into garage leagues in the first place, but I'm not a very sedentary guy nor do I have time for that these days.

For a while in grade school I thought I wanted to be a teacher, but really I just like writing on chalkboards. Then I thought of writing (even started a picture book collaboration with a friend!). Writing turned into manga artist, but then when I figured out there was no artistic talent to be had I went back to just writing. Uh, and I guess that's where I am now. However, I'm also lazy and procrastinate like crazy. Soooooooo, yeah.
Realistically, I know writing doesn't pay the bills. Game design would be neat, but to get there you usually have to start somewhere else, and I don't have any programming or other math and/or art-related game-making skills. Now I'm aiming for an office job somewhere that has 9-5 weekday hours so I can have freetime to pursue writing after work and on weekends. Any suggestions? (I am a college graduate with a bachelor's in English and I minored in Japanese, if that helps for suggestions.)

When I was in second grade, we did one of those "what do you want to be when you grow up" round-the-room discussions, and I said, "taxi driver." I was enthralled with the idea of driving. My teacher did the right thing, I suppose, and said something supportive... So when I came home and told my dad about my new life ambition... well, that's when my dreams were shattered.
So much for being from the generation who could do "anything they wanted to."

^What type of pilot? Military or commercial?
That is about the exact same time that I was in my "pilot" phase. I grew up around aviation though. My dad was an avionics technician during Vietnam and was a nut about radio controlled planes when I was growing up. My parents basement was filled completely with radio controlled aircraft in various stages of completion.
One of the highlights of my young life was getting to see one of the few existing ME 262s in the world at the A&S Smithsonian. I totally geeked out.

I also had an aviation phases at one point. I think it all started when I went to my very first air show and was mesmerized by the synchronicity of the planes/pilots. I also loved buying those little thin, styrofoam planes that came in a sleeve.
The phase didn't last too long, though...but it sure is interesting looking back at childhood.

After I quit, I went back to College. Trying to get a Medical Degree in something. My family is pushing for Radiology since they know someone around my age who is doing quite well in it. But i'm still open to other possibilities.
Working for Best Buy also looks like a possibility. If I keep working the way I am, I should be able to get to GM status within a few years. Retail sounds kinda crappy, but a 6 figure salary certainly does not.

A speech writer would also be good. It could help develop better stories with a little sense of humanity.

^ I don't think so. Most speeches are written with marketing and business in mind, not the human condition or anything.

Exactly. speeches such as those that your saying, may not have human conditions, but have the ability to change peoples opinions. what I'm trying to say is that people are swayed by words even if there is nothing but lies behind them, that is humanity. I'm sorry if you don agree with me.

What do I want to be? Well, like most of you here, I want to get into the gaming industry.
I'm good with computers and I've taken art for as long as I can remember, so doing both game design and development is my main dream. I also don't plan to give up on it, ever.
Right now I'm in grade 12 and after I graduate I plan to take a grade 13 program at the high school in my city that is best know for their arts programs. I thought about going to the International Academy of Design and Technology in Toronto at first but after I found that the the college in our city is getting a game program - that's when I decided to do a full year of art.
So I'll be one of the first students in that program when it comes, in 2009/2010.

When was the last time I posted here...? Oh yea, many months ago.
Ambitions, ambitions, ambitions; where would we humans be without it, eh?
I'm currently pursuing my degree in Journalism, in hopes to become a journalist one day. And yes, I was half thinking of working in a gaming magazine here, but the place where I come from don't have that many nice gaming magazines (and most of the good ones are in Chinese). Probably because most of the gaming community here in my country are mostly made up of the Chinese community.
But either way, that doesn't stop me from wanting to try.
As for my wildest ambition: landing myself a place in Capcom/SquareEnix as a storyboard director.
I can speak some Japanese, but I'm much too lazy to actually study it for real. :P

^Canuck.
Oh yeah, yeah, I know eh? But here, with the snow and the winds eh?
(It actually just snowed a crud load yesterday here :(.)
But seriously, Chinese.
Do you know Chinese?
lol no. Only a tiny bit. I was going to go to a language university in Beijing, but I had a hard time coming up with the money and stayed in Canada. I'm learning some Thai/Laotian and what French I still remember.
