What video game or anime series do you guys feel should get an rpg based off of it.

Outlaw Star should have a game of every genre based on it. Including a sports game.

Heh.
I can't handle any more RPGs right now. Nocturne's got me feeling down.
Most of the stuff I like, I don't think would really translate to an RPG that well.
I do think it'd be nice to see them take another stab at a Megaman X RPG. The battle system in Command Mission was okay, IMO, but the story was idiotic.

I liked Command Mission a lot, had some of the best character designs in the X series.

Everything was idiotic about Command Mission...
What series should be an RPG...I'd say, CSI Miami! It's just...those Caruso one-liners are RPG gems. Besides, if CSI Miami isn't made into an RPG... *puts on sunglasses*

anime i'd like turned into an rpg? saikano would be nice. sure, it has a sim type game and a shooter but.....rpg would be nice. no happy ending there! witch hunter robin wouldnt be a bad choice to be an rpg either. maybe not an rpg, but irresponsible captain tylor would make for a killer strat game.

If you start developing a game from this perspective, you've already handicapped your creativity. For the same reason, you rarely see movies based on games turn out well.

Agreed. Just as much as i'd like to see something like a Street Fighter or Jojo's Bizarre Adventure RPG (aside from that awful SNES one) I just can't see it working out to be a decent game.

Fairy Tail seems like a good manga to base a video game off of. It still needs its anime though argh.
Gundam!... Actually.. I guess that hasn't gone too well. Wolf and spice!

I'd rather developers work on unique IP instead of trying to adapt something from another medium. You can almost never please anyone doing this. Fans of whatever you adapt will bitch and scream that the game doesn't do justice to all aspects of the source material, and their bitching will be so loud that it'll start turning off other folks.

Bleach DS is a great fighting game series. Jump Superstars/Ultimate Stars is also pretty good. Just recent examples off the top of my head. I don't think a game being based off of existing material has any less chance of being good than games based on original material. It depends entirely on the gameplay.

I don't know if there's room for another zombie game franchise. I'd play any George Romero movie if it was turned into an RPG though.

You just haven't watched enough anime Mimi!
You know, most of the things I come up with that would be good games are already games and in Japan. Only there, too.
When I was little I always thought a Robotech RPG would be grand, sorta like PS3 with the generations thing and.. yeah. At the time I had no idea the whole thing was a western assembly job. There is apparently a pen and paper one though.

That was a response to Pixel's general comment about video games based on other creative properties. Since I'm your monkey, however, the Marvel rpg games have gained a strong following, Utewaramono (sp?) has a decent sized following, Romance of the Three Kingdoms has been going strong for decades and the greatest example I can think of would be Mario RPG. If a game is interesting and well made, it can be enjoyable regardless of who created the characters.
@Kaki
I meant that zombie game franchises in general have been done to death, but that I would definitely buy a Dawn of the Dead RPG.
Honestly though, I'd only buy it for the novelty of it. The developers would have to do some pretty innovative stuff to turn that movie into a good RPG.

Actually the PSX gundam fighting games and the two arcade ones are pretty good. And the DW: Gundam too. Never ever underestimate the selling point of giant robots!
Something based off High School of the Dead maybe?

I didn't think the DoD idea was too bad -- I mean if I think of it in terms of similarity to the Zombies mall expansion.
Honestly, I wish someone would adapt the Zombies!!! board game to an online game as a turn based srpg.

Okay, but you are referencing fighting games and action games when we are talking about rpgs. Although in regards to Gundam, there have been a handful of decent strategy games.

Okay, so this is totally backwards, but there was an animated Wizardry series in Japan -- but that is totally different.
Slayn, I thought of one -- Record of Lodoss War. There have been a few decent entries in the series, but the DC arpg was pretty damn nice. I have actually been thinking of quite a few srpgs. But percentages wise, I'm guessing the majority are pretty iffy.

After thinking about it, Sweet Home wasn't a particularly good RPG, so I'm not sure about a straight up zombie RPG.
Something in the style of X Com could work though. I could imagine running around a mall, taking cover behind bookshelves and picking up makeshift weapons. I own the Zombies!!! board game and most of the expansions, but I'm honestly not too hot on the rules. Do you know of any good alternative rules, Kaki?
More on topic though, wasn't Megami Tensai based on horror novels? Also, I think the consensus is that Megaman Legends was a good game, right?
Sweet Home wasn't even an RPG.
Kakizaki

^I guess I wouldn't count MML, but I would say they are good games.
Some buddies and I were working on some rule modifications - such as using remaining hearts as stim packs to revive fallen players where they lay - but the primary friend that played Zombies! left to teach English in Japan last month. :/

Yeah....I would call it an rpg.
It's got an RPG-like battle format, but it seems to me more like a turn-based adventure game. You don't gain levels or anything.
Kakizaki
10-27-2008, 12:10 PM
^I guess I could think of a decent amount of games with similar instances that are thought of as rpgs, but in the end, I guess it is subjective.
Yeah, people call the Zelda games RPGs too. I think of Sweet Home as survival horror with turn based combat.
James Fiend
10-27-2008, 12:12 PM
It's got an RPG-like battle format, but it seems to me more like a turn-based adventure game. You don't gain levels or anything. But you do control a team of characters with individual stats, items and weapons, roam around and interact with a Dragon Quest/Warrior style menu and fight monsters in turn based battles.
And I'm only using this as a basis for a zombie RPG as it's the only horror movie to RPG game I can think of. The problem is that RPG doesn't work well with tension or scares (one of the few things that bothered me about Parasite Eve).
The one strong thing it could have going for it is storyline and character depth, though. Especially if based on Romero's work. I still think it would work better as a turn based strategy RPG or something like that though. Including shoot outs with some of the people who inevitably go nuts because they want to be leader/their family member got bit/etc.
Also, does anyone know how the Shenmue MMO went in Japan, assuming it didn't get cancelled?

Oh, there have been plenty of good Gundam games, the G generation ones are sort of like SRT but only with Gundam, and Ghiren's Greed is a pretty decent management game a la ROTTK. Only straight Gundam RPG I can think of though is MS Saga and that wasn't very good :(
I would think Dead Raising would be a pretty good Dawn of the Dead RPG template :P/ You gain stats and levels, too!. All it needs is an ending that doesn't suck, and some turn or pseudo turn based combat, and you're golden.

Bleach DS DID get turned into an SRGP, called 3rd Phantom. It's crap.
As for Jump...I might see that as an interesting RPG...
Now, I should've said this in my earlier post when I jumped the gun...But, Prominence dude...you said "video game or anime", and I went and posted CSI Miami...well, let's just say, I don't care about biasing a medium. :) Caruso can kick Sephiroth's ass any day. Hence...I urge everyone here who's yet to post...be creative!

I've not actually heard of an El Hazard video game RPG. I know there are books for pen & paper RPGs of it, but the only actual video game I'm aware of is an action/adventure one for the Saturn. This isn't to say there weren't a bunch of other obscure anime RPGs for it. (I own both Rayearth and Slayers.)
However, on the topic of anime games, I'm also unaware of an Eva RPG. I know there's a boatload of action, adventure, and dating sim games for it, but I do think an RPG would work out nicely. Perhaps Atlus JP could go talk to Gainax, as I could see a Persona setup for that game also...
